Challenge: Explode your TBR

One thing I take into account is the rating. If it is below a 3.75, I reconsider whether I want to tackle it or not. I also take into account my friends' ratings or whether they have read the book or not. That goes a long way in deciding if a book is worth the time.

Oh I do like this strategy, actually numbers based.

I’m like you Nadine, my list is potential reads but so many of them aren’t anymore. 250 last year is pretty great!

I like this idea. I've been on Goodreads since 2009, too. My TBR list is only 10% of yours, though, and I've been trying to whittle it down by reading but my list continues go grow. I recently thought about going through my TBR list after watching the Maniacal book tuber from Japan's first "Massaging My TBR" episode from about three weeks ago.

It’s in the air! I’m sure Marie Kondo hasn’t hurt.

I like this idea! It never occurred to me to declutter my to be read list:)

I just don't know if I can bring myself to join in, stop judging me.

My first goal is to read or declutter the ones I already own and want to read, then I can move on to the TBR list on Goodreads, if that makes sense!

Always optional, my friend. :)

So followup question, to the few who will see this thread. This is ending up being a 10 book a month speed date, really. Should I record a bonus episode every two months or so, or should I just keep it to myself?

Me too, I love the speed dating episodes :)

A vote for you to share.

Oh, I like the TBR jar idea.

Yes share

There is this random number generator where you could put in however many books are on your TBR and use the associated number!

Thought you would all enjoy this recent Book Riot article about weeding your TBR.

Good advice in that one!

Many (most?) are books I either 1) know I want to read, they're on the 1001 books list!, 2) are kid books and now my kids are teens, 3) are things I no longer have any interest in, or 4) I have no idea why they are there (this could be past me, this could be giveaways adding them). I may lose a few that I really want to read, but I am willing to take this risk ;)
Does anyone know how to clear that shelf? I have tried, but get a window saying you cannot delete books from an exclusive shelf. But aren't all books on an exclusive shelf? I can't figure out how to do a mass move to another shelf, I can't make the to-read shelf non-exclusive (I think? It is a default shelf), I cant figure out how to do a mass move to a non-exclusive shelf (but woudn't they still be on an exclusive shelf?). It is painfully slow to delete them one at a time.

Starting over sounds grand. When I’m deleting from that list I do look at it in list form and just go one by one deleting. What a pain. I guess another strategy is to start a brand new TBR shelf and just ignore the other one! I double checked and those standard three shelves don’t let you uncheck the box that says exclusive. Dang!

Good news - sometime in June's TBR Explode project I realized I was on to 2010 books I added, meaning I moved forward a year. I know my use of Goodreads has grown exponentially, but that means I only have books left on my TBR from 2009 that I still genuinely want to read. That's progress.
I've been an active member of Goodreads since 2009. This means my TBR in Goodreads is ten years old! I don't know if you are the same reader now that you were ten years ago, but I most certainly am not.
I've set myself a pretty simple goal, and so far it's gone well so I thought I'd share it. Every month, I'm looking at ten books on my Goodreads TBR, starting back in January 2009. I am deciding if I still want to read each book by reading the Kindle preview or reading the first 20-50 pages or even just reading the description. If it no longer stands out to me (in other words, if it no longer brings me joy), I am deleting it from my TBR. If it's a book I own, I'm getting rid of the book.
I'm not necessarily reading all the books I decide to keep, although I did end up reading one so far because it was short and it suited my mood.
By the end of the year, I'll only have sorted through 120 books on my 3000+ list, but it still feels like progress. Maybe I can speed up at some point and just commit to sorting through all books added in 2009. I don't know what the number is, so I'll have to check.
How can you explode your TBR?
