I read around probably 2012-2014. It was for probably younger teens. There was something about alchemy/alchemist in the title and I think some symbols on the cover. This kid is an alchemist's apprentice.

There is something weird about the trees and they're all dying. He has this female friend. Also, I think at some point the alchemist dies.
