Last year I read a post-apocalyptic book I borrowed from a friend. It began with a girl being born with strange, odd shaped eyes. As the book goes on, it is revealed that this is the result of radiation after a nuclear event. Later in the book, we discover this girl's location is on the west coast of America. The main character is a young man living inside a walled city who begins to venture outside the walls on short excursions. Eventually the boy makes a journey, with some others from the city, to the west coast. Their is a mechanical flying owl that the group uses to perform recon and get messages back and forth. The leaders of the city do not approve of this voyage. At some point the group returns and the boy falls in love with a girl. The boy enters underground tunnels to get into the city leaders main quarters and discovers hidden supplies. I cannot remember the name of the book or author, and neither can my friend. I want to find the title so I can tell another friend to read it and I simply cannot remember it.
