This thread is open to discuss The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides.

Synopsis
Promising to be the debut novel of the season The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive…

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

Laura | 9707 comments Hi Geri,
I'll be back on Monday. I have a brand new copy. I love being the first person to read a new book!

Geri The library was able to get you a copy quickly! Looking forward to reading this!

message 6: by Geri (last edited Feb 11, 2019 10:24AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Geri Couldn’t wait to start! I am through book 2, chapter 13. About a third through. It’s very interesting. I have a soft spot for psychological thrillers, mysteries. Theo and Alicia are complicated characters and maybe similar in that they have both had terrible childhoods and dealt with abuse, I think. I am suspicious of some things.(view spoiler)

Laura | 9707 comments I will start tonight after work!

Laura | 9707 comments I started I didn't get as far as you Geri! I'm about 40 pages in. I 'm interested in reading Alicia and Theo's stories!

Geri Laura wrote: "I started I didn't get as far as you Geri! I'm about 40 pages in. I 'm interested in reading Alicia and Theo's stories!"

It’s getting more interesting as the book goes on. I’m up to part 4 chapter 4 now. The book isn’t too long so the time is flying by. Lots of questions and more suspects. (view spoiler)

Brooke | 1199 comments I love the way the story unfolds bit by bit in this one.

One of my favorite things about this book is that with each new chapter, another suspect or seed of doubt is planted. (view spoiler)

I finished and agree the best part was how everything was revealed bit by bit. I suspected pretty much every character. But happy to say, I was surprised by the end! (view spoiler)

Can’t wait to read what you thought, Laura!

Laura | 9707 comments I'm still working on it! Real life is getting in the way. Hoping to make some progress tonight

Brooke | 1199 comments Geri: Same! (view spoiler)

I know what it’s like during a challenge. It can get crazy! One reason I skipped for now. I am tearing through my tbr list. But, I keep adding to it too! LOL And reading books that I just stumble upon.

Let me know what you think of the book. I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Spring break already!!

Me too, Brooke!
He's worked really hard this year and definitely deserves this break before the end of his semester for this year.

Laura | 9707 comments I'm up to chapter 15

Once you get into the story it does move along rather quickly doesn't it? I'm quite enjoying it.

Laura | 9707 comments I'm in part 4, chapter 12
(view spoiler)

Laura | 9707 comments I have a copy of The Perfect Friend by Barbara Copperthwaite the other book you were interested in, Geri. When can you get a copy and when do you want to start that one?

Laura | 9707 comments Sounds good Brooke. It looks intriguing. Geri, usually likes to start on a Monday so lets wait and see if she is good to go as well before I request/make the thread.

Glad you enjoyed it too! I suspected pretty much everyone as well. The book uses a device that I have seen in a few books lately. (view spoiler) But I never expect it. It definitely makes it easier to fool the reader.

March 4 or March 11?

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Would anyone mind if I butt in and buddy up with you?

Laura | 9707 comments Vicki wrote: "Would anyone mind if I butt in and buddy up with you?"

Not at all. Feel free to join us. Going to make a new thread for The Perfect Friend

Brooke | 1199 comments Laura, both of those Mondays work for me. I just can't start it over the weekend.

Great, Vicki! The more the merrier. :-)

Laura | 9707 comments Here's our Thread

I wasn't sure if Geri meant March 4 or the 11th so I made it for the 4th and we can figure out which Monday when she chimes in!

( ha sorry Geri... I blame it on the cold... it was minus 30 this morning with the windchill. I 'm starting to go a little crazy with the frigid temps. Thankfully, its been sunny the last several days)

Brooke | 1199 comments Laura wrote: "(ha sorry Geri... I blame it on the cold... it was minus 30 this morning with the windchill..."

How in the world can you take it??!! I complain when it is 30 above with the windchill, which only happens a few days out of the year here. Living on the West Coast and in Texas for the last 23 years has made me a complete wimp.

Vicki (goodreadscomboobooper49) | 2326 comments Thanks Laura and Brooke. :)

Dress really warm; layers, try not to go outside if I don't have too. ( hard with a dog who loves to go for walks!) I guess we get used to it.
Its been an unusual winter.. really cold and more wind/ice storms than snow. Its minus 13 with a windchill of minus 22. Sun is shining.... its a bit better than yesterday. This cold is supposed to break and we are looking at minus 6 on Saturday! I can handle that!

Laura | 9707 comments Oh boy, Brooke, look what I found:
Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

We will have to read this one!

Yes! I wonder if it will be a March Book of the Month option. I guess I'll find out tomorrow. :-)

I'm 3rd in queue!

Brooke | 1199 comments I'm #18, but the library has 10 copies. Hopefully it won't be too long before a copy is available.

message 43: by Geri (new) - rated it 4 stars

Geri Sorry ladies! I had some stuff going on for the last few days. March 4 works just fine. I would rearrange my schedule if it didn’t!

The book looks good! It could be kinda wild. And I did see it as a possible BOM.

It was subzero here a few weeks ago. I don’t want to go through that again! No going outside and worrying that the electricity and heat might go out. What a disaster that would have been! We kept the thermostat low so the heater didn’t work too hard.

You are made of tough stuff, Laura! I couldn’t go through subzero temps or wind chill too often!

Alicia 🌻 | 4 comments Awesome! It’s perfect timing, it just became available at my library! This will be the first time I am reading it

Wendy (wendy_b) | 3 comments Was it just me or was everyone in this story slightly unhappy about something? Which maybe is really just scene setting to make you FEEL melancholy about the whole thing - because the beginning sure did make me feel that way, but at times it was so annoying how down all of these people were.
