Caitlin Dozier The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas focuses on a young African- American girl named Starr Carter (coolest name ever, honestly) who is instantly faced with hardship in the first couple chapters in the book. Starr lives in Garden Heights which the book pins as “ghetto” but goes to school in Williamson. Starr attends a private school that is predominantly white, her best friends are white, and her boyfriend is white. This book focuses on racial profiling and police brutality; both huge topics in the news right now. I really enjoyed this book because of how current it is. A friend of Starr’s, Khalil, was shot and killed in a traffic stop and after this incident Starr is faced with reality. Carlos, Starr’s uncle, defends the officer by saying that everything is about race and Khalil was a bad influence and a drug dealer. Starr remains anonymous and does not tell any of her friends that she was involved with this awful incident. In the book, I noticed that something clicked for her. She started to notice that the news was pinning Khalil as a suspected gang member, she was seeing people in tshirts for protests, she saw riots breaking out in Garden Heights. She realizes that she needs to be Khalil’s voice, because he cannot stand up for himself. She needs to bring him justice. This book will definitely be read for generations and generations; it does a great job of showing how police officers see themselves as above the law and get no punishment for being unjust. I could not put this book down and I think that everyone needs to read it once; it really opens your eyes.

Not sure if you're aware of this but did you mean to post this as a public forum post?

I'm asking because it looks like your school has set up private groups where you should be posting your reviews.
