I read it when I was a kid in early-mid 1990s though this was not a children's book.

I believe the main character is the man, could be his wife, but one of them works at a zoo. One day there is a litter of lion or tiger cubs that are near death, he takes them home and revives them essentially by warming them in the oven or on the stove. The story is about their lives while he worked at the zoo and all of the baby animals they were able to save from death.

I believe the cover was a red color, and had a black and white photo of the woman holding a baby deer.
