The cover had a girl walking barefoot on the cover leaving rose petals behind.
It was set in Chicago and the freezing weather of Chicago played a huge role in the plot--if I remember correctly, a teenager girl met a boy and fell in love with him, but somebody died on the ice--either his sister or her best friend, someone like that, which caused them to break up.
I also remember that the girl and her mother lived alone (single mom) and for some reason the fact that they had Sunday as "their special day" really stood out to me (e.g. a strong mother-daughter relationship).
The whole tone wasn't unlike Sarah Zarr, but I'm relatively certain it wasn't a Sarah Zarr book.
