Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments The Lair of the White Worm? Seriously? The title alone conjures all sorts of oddities...

message 102: by Paul (new)

Paul Oh yes, it was desperate. Strange premise, Gothic, and full of absurdities that didn't hold up to even the most cursory examination. Also, if you thought Dracula was written in overblown, purple Victorian prose, TLotWW was ten times worse.

message 103: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Now I really need to read Dracula. Overblown, purple Victorian prose, you say? Sounds delightful! :o)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments General post to any who look:

Oh, sheesh, while I'm thinking of it, here's my author blog, if anyone is interested in following: http://jaimeygrant.blogspot.com

For book reviews and author interviews: http://romanceoldschool.blogspot.com

That's all. This doesn't count as spam, does it??

message 105: by Paul (new)

Paul No, that's OK. Once :)

You haven't read Dracula, Jaimey? I'm surprised. Classic because it was one of the first vampire novels, and more or less established the genre. There are earlier ones, but so few have read them - except Stoker himself, obviously - that they didn't leave much of a mark. It's been done better since, but that is partly becuase the language is now so archaic to our modern eyes.

message 106: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments I know Byron started a vampire novel but never finished it, giving his friend permission to finish it instead. Haven't read that one, either.

I'm not the biggest fan of vampire novels, or paranormal at all, for that matter.

message 107: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments I'm still into my new fantasy WIP--not necessarily a good thing when I have two manuscripts that desperately need edits.

Anyway, here's today's count: 863

I'll try to do more tomorrow. :o)

message 108: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments I worked on my fantasy WIP today: 308 words

I stopped there because I seriously need to concentrate on edits. And if I'm going to attempt NaNoWriMo this year, I'll need to take some time to map out a new story.

Make your own banner at MyBannerMaker.com!

You should click the banner Jaimey! You really should! It's my official 'Read It' banner! I will now use it whenever I want ANYONE to read something

message 110: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments {{ Yeah, Daisy, I clicked the banner. How could I not? :o) }}

Meanwhile, I am neck-deep in edits. I have to crack down and get them done. I also have a Regency blog post to do that MUST be done by morning. Ugh.

message 111: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Wrote 366 words on Retribution today.

message 112: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments I'm so tired and a little depressed. I wrote a little on my NewWIP, only 121 words. I'm very weepy lately. My writing always suffers when I feel like this...blah.

Meanwhile, my brother's wife had a baby boy a few days ago. That was cool. But now we all seem to be getting sick. Really not cool. Blah, again. :o(

message 113: by Jaimey (last edited Sep 19, 2009 10:02PM) (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments So I'm researching chemistry now, specifically early 19th century chemistry. I found a book on google books called "Conversations on Chemistry" by Mrs Marcet (1809) that is intended for women who have no knowledge of chemistry. No surprise that I actually understand it...so far...

Meanwhile, I'm editing on my MS "Angel" lately. The word count has probably gone up but I haven't really been keeping track.

Edited to add: Conversations on Chemistry

message 114: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments While I'm still working on editing Angel, I actually wrote a vignette that is connected to yet another WIP. So far, I've written 536 words on it.

message 115: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments So, I've been slacking off lately. Mostly because I've been brainstorming and when I do that, I don't keep track of word count and whatnot.

I have a first draft completed of another Regency novel but I have decided to change a key plot point. There will be a TON of re-working on that one. I still have two novels in the last stages and I'm so tired my eyes hurt. I should go to bed now...

message 116: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Today's word count: 576

I re-wrote the vignette of that other WIP. It could almost stand up as a flash fiction piece.

Soon I'll need to pop over to some of the other threads in this group and see what everyone else is up to...

message 117: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Ho, hum. Well, word count for 9/27 (vignette again): 406

Today's (9/28): OK, none, really. I edited some more on an upcoming release and got distracted by stupid facebook games. Stupid facebook.

message 118: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Wow. I didn't realize I'd gone so long without posting anything. Hmm. Word counts. Word counts. I have not managed to keep up with my 200 word goal. Mostly, I've been editing which inevitably leads to losing words rather than gaining them. Oh well. I'll keep trying.

Meanwhile, as the ideas come to me, I write flash fiction. It's fun. I'm learning how to say more with less words. Not a bad idea for a novelist, actually.

message 119: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments I took the plunge. I am going to do NaNoWriMo this year. Here's my addy if anyone wants to be buddies:

http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/user/534005

Word counts...word counts...I've lost about 1000 words on one of my rough drafts. That doesn't count, though, does it? :oP

message 120: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments New word count for some notes on my NewWIP (and the most likely book to be written for NaNoWriMo even though I'll actually have to scrap everything I've already written on it): 271

Does that count? I'm so tired. :o)

Didn't I have a stalker at one time? I seem to have misplaced him...

message 121: by Paul (new)

Paul No, I'm just getting really good at stalking! You don't notice me now, but I am everywhere.

See, this post proves it.

message 122: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Whew. I thought I had lost my stalkerbility for a second there.

You are good. When did you learn to stop breathing?

message 123: by Paul (new)

Paul I still breathe, just less often. One a month or so, whether I need to or not :)

message 124: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments LOL :oD

message 125: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Word count for today on my notes for NaNo: 461

I'm off to bed now. 2:36am is way too late for me to be up. :o)

message 126: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments So, yesterday's count was 196 and today's was 334. That's ok. I'm still preparing for NaNo.

message 127: by Liz (new)

Liz | 80 comments I was going to say that this is actually Paul, and REALLY freak you out, but since we don't know each other, that would be a little weird.

Hi, I'm Liz, by the way :P

Congrats on your NaNo!

message 128: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Thanx, Liz!

Yeah, I might have wondered at your sanity, claiming to be Paul. Insane people always freak me out. LOL (Just kidding. I can't be too freaked out by my own kind.)

Thanx for stopping by! :o)

message 129: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Today's word count (still NaNo prep): 302

I'm trying to figure out how to mesh medieval fantasy with biological mutation/advanced technology science fiction, sort of Hercules meets X-Men. I'm not sure how it will work out but I'm going to try...

message 130: by Paul (last edited Oct 25, 2009 01:06AM) (new)

Paul Just a thought Jaimey, but how about introducing time travel and reality TV?

'We'll go back in time and introduce our genetically created dragons, ghouls, hell-hounds etc to a mediaeval world, see how these so-called heroes really tick. Filming it all in secret.'

Like a reality version of Gladiators. I know variants have been done before, but it has some promise...

message 131: by Liz (new)

Liz | 80 comments Paul, I love that.

message 132: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Interesting thought, Paul. Yes, I suppose I could do something of that nature...Timeline meets The Truman Show. Ha! That would be funny. I could have the camera crew eventually get eaten by the dragon. {evil grin}

message 133: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments It occurred to me just now that Firefly was a brilliant blending of old west and space travel. Definitely an odd pairing.

While I admit that your idea, Paul, of time travel and hidden cameras is intriguing, I don't think I'll go there with this novel. It may be a huge mistake but NaNo is all about learning. Perhaps after I see how the story goes, as is, I will consider a drastic change.

As always, thank you for your input, Paul. :o)

At this point, I'm thinking there is a general ban on technology. Only the mad scientists of the Tech Order still practice and they are generally despised and thought of as corrupt. (As I write this, I wonder at my own sanity...)

message 134: by Paul (new)

Paul That's OK Jaimey. You don't have to accept my suggestions. :)

Actually I find that given the same basic premise, five different people will come up with five completely different takes on it. That's what makes fiction so interesting. You might think, oh no, not another vampire tale, but the next author to do it might have a fantastic, original concept that revolutionises the genre.

Good luck in Nano anyway, and if you do get stuck, you know where to come for help or encouragement!

Or you end up with... No. Will not say it. Will. Not. Say. It.

I find it weird how I get a lot of ideas, but my most insane (as in, best) ones tend to spring up and flower from a premise that somebody else thought up. It's a little annoying, like I'm not good enough for myself or something.

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Paul wrote: "Good luck in Nano anyway, and if you do get stuck, you know where to come for help or encouragement!"

Thank you so much, Paul. I appreciate the support. I have a feeling I'll be getting stuck quite a bit. I'm having fun with a new genre, though. You never know. Maybe fantasy is my calling instead of Regency romance, lol!

I know what you mean. I find myself with the same problem. :o/

Last night, I was pitching my fantasy novel idea to my husband and he mentioned the Incredible Hulk. Apparently, my backstory about the man who turns into a dragon with an ancestor who messed with his blood reminded hubby of the Hulk. Yeah, in a way, the premise is similar. However, the ancestor was experimenting with his own blood, not his son's. Hubby seemed really intrigued with my synopsis which is promising. He doesn't like fantasy as a general rule and he likes the amount of science-fiction I'm managing to incorporate.

Again, I may be crazier than I thought...

:op

message 137: by Anne (new)

Anne (mekone) | 225 comments I would love a story about a man who turns into a dragon! I will keep my eyes peeled for your next success! :)

message 138: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments I hope I can pull it off! I'm running into "what if" scenarios that are making my head spin. :o)

message 139: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments OK, I think I finally managed to work up a short synopsis for my NaNoWriMo novel. I'm posting it here to see if it raises any major questions in anyone. Be brutal. Thanx.

"The four moons of the planet Aiblameer have risen as legend foretold. In the kingdom of Coraji, in a world torn by war, the last link in a chain of events falls into place. The dragon is born and King Darok's curse begins. His battle for peace becomes a battle for his life as the dragon inside him struggles to reign supreme. The only one who can help him is Raena, a female warrior with a hazy past and a grim determination to see him dead."

Questions?
Comments?
Criticisms?
Concerns?

message 140: by Paul (new)

Paul When you say the four moons have risen, do you mean that they are all visible at the same time? An event that happens once every few centuries? How do the orbital mechanics of that work? How about some other phenomenon, like two suns - that could be configured to happen once every x thousand years, and would last longer - a far more telling portent in the sky.

Other than that, sounds good!

Keep us posted on its progress. :)

message 141: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Good point, Paul. A solar phenomenon would pack the kind of power needed to turn him into a dragon, I think. Probably makes more sense than lunar. It would freak me out if I looked out and saw another sun...

message 142: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Word count for Nov 1: 4181 on my NaNoWriMo novel. Go me!

message 143: by Paul (new)

Paul Incredible, Jaimey. Well done!

message 144: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments My count was 5023 by the time I went to bed. Perhaps this whole "deadline" thing was exactly what I needed.

message 145: by Paul (new)

Paul Great stuff Jaimey. We'll have a race. I start slow.

message 146: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments Word count for Nov 2: 2511 for NaNo, bringing my NaNo count to 6692. I have to go grocery shopping tomorrow so I'm sure my word count will be a lot less.

:o)

message 147: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments NaNo, Nov 3: 1130 bringing my total to 7822

Less than I wanted to get today but more than I expected to considering I was away from home most of the day.

message 148: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments NaNo, Nov 4: 1208; total for NaNo: 9030

I should have managed a more today but I had some trouble finding my writing groove. I need advice on how to kill my inner editor. All I wanted to do was go back over what I had written and change stuff. What a pain.

message 149: by Jaimey (new)

Jaimey (jaimeygrant) | 156 comments NaNo, Nov 5: 3,712
Total for NaNo: 12,742

I managed to stick my inner editor in the closet and ignore her pleas for release. She is disgruntled but has agreed to keep her suggestions to a bare minimum.

message 150: by Anne (last edited Nov 06, 2009 03:45AM) (new)

Anne (mekone) | 225 comments My inner editor is usually a pest, so I have no compunction about sending her away for the entire month but maybe you're better friends with yours, Jaimey?

I hope you'll have a great weekend, and happy writing! :)
