Simon accompanies Clary and Jace to see Magnus Bane and ends up being turned into a rat and they lose him. Clary seems to be the only one concerned. Shadowhunters are charged with protecting mundanes, but they seem to have very little respect for those they serve. Why do you think their feelings for normal humans are so complicated? Why do they continue to serve mundanes if they don’t like them?

Being a Shadowhunter seems like more of a job for them than a calling. I think they enjoy the fighting more than anything else. Mundanes are beneath them and just get in the way.

Great point, Melissa! I hadn’t thought of that distinction, duty versus a calling, and it makes sense. Jace loves the fight but doesn’t seem invested in the people he’s trying to save.

Shadowhunters seem very snobbish, looking down on everyone else. I agree with Melissa, for them it seems to be more about the fight than it is about the protecting.
