The Postman Rings Twice is a classic crime story, about a wife who conspires with her boyfriend to kill her husband. It's full of action and suspense as we wonder if and how they'll do it, and if and how they'll get caught. Cain also wrote Double Indemnity, which had a similar plot line. Both stories were made into popular movies, in the film noir genre. Both stories also include smart insurance investigators, but the one in this book was much more devious. I listened to the audio version narrated by Stanley Tucci, and his narration was spot on. He gave it a perfect film noir sound without sounding like a bad imitation of Humphrey Bogart.

Tracy wrote: "I liked this one and Double Indemnity, but loved Mildred Pierce. His writing is so smooth."I agree. Mildred Pierce is complex and interesting, and the main character is more sympathetic. The classic movie was great, as well as the more recent mini-series with Kate Winslet. She was so good.
