I had so many other issues with it besides everyone being in love/not in love with each other. Tropes are going to happen, they're what make up stories. I might have liked it if I read it when it came out, but given that I read it after I read Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom just so I could read King of Scars, I found the characters to be pretty one-dimensional and lack-luster, even the main characters. The fandom itself kind of tainted it for me too, but that's a whole other issue that I have with people thirsting after toxic characters to begin with and this is not the thread to discuss such issues.

I'm glad you enjoyed the books, a lot of people did. A lot of people don't like Six of Crows, as you can see even in this thread.

Honestly? This first chapter is awful."

How so?

Mandy (mandamahoney) | 6 comments I’m reading the grisha trilogy before re-reading six of crows, since I’ve never read them before. Currently starting book 2 on audible. I listened to six of crows on audible the first time and I found out the narrator who does inej’s chapters narrates the grisha trilogy! Anyone else listened to the grisha trilogy rather than physically read it? The plan is to re-read six of crows physically after I finish this. I find I have different experiences listening verse physically reading and am excited to dive back into SoC in a different format.

Tainee (theveiledreader) (theveiledreader) | 7 comments Honestly speaking, I read the trilogy before Six of Crows and I loved it, especially Siege and Storm.
I started reading it after gathering all the bad reviews, I guess I went in with little to no expectations so it gave me a pleasant surprise instead.
Though I can understand why there are mixed reviews.
Compared to the Six of Crows, The writing was quite awkward and honestly speaking, I disliked the main character and her boyfriend.
However, after I steeled myself and got passed that, I learnt to appreciate the trilogy. I focused instead on the plot and the side characters like Zoya, Tamar, Nikolai and Tolya because I love them.
Having to get through the first few chapters of the first book was slow and frustrating and it really only took off during the second book, in my opinion.

Alexis Gasienica (alexiis4) | 2 comments I have read the book already and I'm highly contemplating a reread simply because of this group! I read it in I believe August of last year! Favorite character(s) for me was definitely Kaz and Inej!! I just love LBs writing style—she created such an amazing world!

Oh, yeah I agree that fanthoms can ruin books for people! I kinda avoid them a bit now. To be honest, I just really liked the world and the story itself. I like the type of light vs dark stories, where you have to find pieces to defend the evil. It is a bit nostalgic I guess :D I liked the love/not love relationships but I know it's because I am sucker for love stories. I also found it very confusion how people who keep saying that they do not approve toxic relationships and manipulations and etc are in love with The Darkling. So confusing....
Anyway, just started Six of Crows, hopefully I'll finish it before Friday!

Jess | 3 comments Just finished and I’m in LOVE. The characters, magic system, the world, everything! I had difficulty in the first two chapters but I blame it on reading other books at the same time and solidifying that I am not one who can do that and focus on the content. Thus why I’m finishing right on time. I really love all the characters but Matthias and preciousbabyfellowhufflepuffiswear Wylan have to be my “favorite”. Feels weird calling favorites when I adore and feel so protective over all of them!

Yay for Matthias!
They are such a great group of characters.
