Honestly? This first chapter is awful."
How so?

I started reading it after gathering all the bad reviews, I guess I went in with little to no expectations so it gave me a pleasant surprise instead.
Though I can understand why there are mixed reviews.
Compared to the Six of Crows, The writing was quite awkward and honestly speaking, I disliked the main character and her boyfriend.
However, after I steeled myself and got passed that, I learnt to appreciate the trilogy. I focused instead on the plot and the side characters like Zoya, Tamar, Nikolai and Tolya because I love them.
Having to get through the first few chapters of the first book was slow and frustrating and it really only took off during the second book, in my opinion.

Oh, yeah I agree that fanthoms can ruin books for people! I kinda avoid them a bit now. To be honest, I just really liked the world and the story itself. I like the type of light vs dark stories, where you have to find pieces to defend the evil. It is a bit nostalgic I guess :D I liked the love/not love relationships but I know it's because I am sucker for love stories. I also found it very confusion how people who keep saying that they do not approve toxic relationships and manipulations and etc are in love with The Darkling. So confusing....
Anyway, just started Six of Crows, hopefully I'll finish it before Friday!

Yay for Matthias!
They are such a great group of characters.

Omg same i actually liked the grisha trilogy but mainly because of book 3 and the darkling and all the revelations

I had so many other issues with it besides everyone being in love/not in love with each other. Tropes are going to happen, they're what make up stories. I might have liked it if I read it when it came out, but given that I read it after I read Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom just so I could read King of Scars, I found the characters to be pretty one-dimensional and lack-luster, even the main characters. The fandom itself kind of tainted it for me too, but that's a whole other issue that I have with people thirsting after toxic characters to begin with and this is not the thread to discuss such issues.
I'm glad you enjoyed the books, a lot of people did. A lot of people don't like Six of Crows, as you can see even in this thread.
