I think the way they depicted it was just too unbelievable. What made the novel work was how Vegas was so organ..."
Yes! While watching the episode I thought, would people actually act like this?

OMG - what did I just watch?!?!?! This entire thing was horrible. Ugh. I was so incredibly excited for this show. It is my favorite book, and I love the original series. When the pandemic shut everything down, the first thing we did was watch the original series! :)
I don't blame the actors for this, but the characters were so flat! I really think it was a directorial decision, but they were not interesting. Larry got the brooding down, but where was all the arrogance at the beginning? He had no growth, and Larry has a lot of growth throughout the story.
Frannie grew on me over the course of the series, but meh. She grew from OMG no to meh.
Harold - no. No, no, no. I mean, he got psycho Harold down great, but again, he was so much more than just psycho Harold. Honestly, Harold kind of ruined the whole thing for me.
I thought Greg Kinnear was a good Bateman. I thought James Marsden did a pretty good Stu. I was unsure at first, but that's probably because I'm so attached to Gary Sinise as Stu! I liked him by the end. I also thought the new Tom did a great job. I was so disappointed that he just seemed like an after thought though. He was an important character, and he was just a blip in the new series. So disappointing!
Nick - what the heck were they thinking? Nick is such a great character, and they just did nothing with him. When Nick dies it's awful because you have a chance to get attached to him and his story, but in this version, who cares? I mean, they don't give us hardly anything with his character. I didn't mind the actor, they just didn't give him anything interesting to do, say, or be. Ugh.
Flagg - he was okay. I like the actor, and I thought he did a good job, but I don't like what the writers did with his character. Again, it was just flat.
Lloyd - What?! Noooooooo! Lloyd is a complex character not some cartoonish cariacature. That was horrible!
I didn't like what they did with Trashcan Man. Again - recurring theme here - he was not interesting at all. He had an internal struggle that they just ignored and made him some evil freak. That was irritating. I wish they'd have given him depth. I think the actor could have done a great job with that.
Amber Heard. Booooooo.
Whoopi Goldberg - meh. I mean, she wasn't awful. I think the writers just did not do Mother Abigal justice.
They just left huge chunks of the story out - and in my opinion, huge chunks of the most interesting parts of the story. Then they make crap up - and not good stuff. The writers were horrible. I kept yelling, "No!" at the screen over and over and over and over. My kids and husband were laughing, but they agreed as well. I ranted for about 45 minutes last night after we finished. LOL. I was eating ice cream straight out of the carton, and my husband said, "Hey! Is there any more ice cream left?" I said, "There won't be!" LOL. There was. I told my family that we were going to have to watch the original and I was going to have to reread the book just to cleanse my palate!
I don't want to criticize the King because, I mean, come on, he's the King, but I'm going to - the ending was terrible. I mean, I might not have hated it if the rest of the series had been good, and they hadn't left so much of the awesomeness out, but they did. So, when it was time for the last episode - just no. No, no, no. Blech. What a huge let down! I'm so disappointed.

I finally watched the series this week. I don't know if anyone will be able to make a good Stand show. I remember being so pumped for this. They had an amazing cast sign on too. I did try to look up and see if there would be a season 2, it's hard to tell but it hasn't been green lit yet.

I've just seen it classified as a miniseries, I guess it's always possible they could expand it with another season. I think with all of the mixed reviews the series got, it probably wouldn't be worthwhile for an additional season to be made.

I think the way they depicted it was just too unbelievable. What made the novel work was how Vegas was so organized, not a total sin pit.
