SOLVED. Old sci-fi (40+ yrs) spaceship crash lands on a world of water [s]

Three people crash land in their spaceship on a water planet. One is a young "handsome prince" type character and one is a young beautiful princess character. The third is an older, fat merchant.

The planet is populated by several tribes of wind gargoyles for lack of a better description. They have various political intrigues and tribal warfare is going on between the groups. One group is about to be overrun and comes upon the crash landing survivors and befriends them.

The fat merchant works with this tribe in effort to defeat the tribe that attacking them.

This MAY have been juvenile fiction, but not certain. Read about 40 yrs ago and it was not a new book at the time.
