The first thing I heard when I woke up was the whirring of machines and voices. Strange voices. Different voices. Voices that made my tongue feel too big and my mouth too small.
I opened my eyes blearily and attempted to shake my head. That was when I realized my head was clamped to a table of some sort that I was laying on. My eyes widened, and I tried to bring my hands to my head, but found they were clamped, too. In fact, to my horror, my entire body was strapped down to a table, the iron clamps digging into my skin painfully.
I tried to shout, but my voices wouldn't work. I stared around me, wild-eyed.
I found many other tables similar to mine lined up, and the immaculate white floors and walls shone like the sun. Each table was empty, however, their iron clamps lying open mournfully. The voices I had heard earlier were getting closer, and all too soon the wide double doors at the end of the hall opened with a bang. I tried to scream, but again, my voice stubbornly didn't work.
As the people-like figures drew closer, my eyes were able to focus on them. They were relatively human-like, with long legs and arms, a large torso and hands a feet. In fact, I saw nothing odd about them until one turned slightly, feet away from me, For a split second, I saw huge, feathered wings sprouting out the back of the figure. Large and black, the wings melded smoothly into the creature's back, slipping without a bump into the lab coat that it wore.
I blinked, but when I opened my eyes again the wings were gone. I hardly had a moment to consider this phenomenon, because I caught sight of the huge syringe the leading man was holding in his hand.
When the group got close enough, I heard the man holding the syringe speak. Except it wasn't English, it was odd, and nothing like anything I had heard before. A complicated mixture of a shriek and a bird call flew from his mouth again. I cringed, but still stared, terrified at the man. He continued to shriek, and it almost seemed as if he was trying to assure me I'd be okay.
By the looks of that syringe, however, I was definitely not going to be okay. I struggled against my bonds in a panic, and I caught a fleeting glimpse of alarm in the man's eyes. I tried to shout and scream, clawing at my cuffs and throwing myself at my captors. Unfortunately, all my effort and strength was wasted, and after a while I lay, panting, on the table as I had used the last of my energy.
I looked up at the creature above me. There was something in his eyes- pity? Regret? Sadly, I was never to know as he gave one apologetic smile and plunged the syringe in my arm.
