Lois | 5 comments I´m looking for an alpha reader for a manuscript that I´m part-way through rewriting (the second draft). I do have some specifics that I´m concerned about but I don´t know if I should mention everything like that here or not.
I really want someone who will write everything in a constructive way (help but not make me feel like crap when they say it)...
My manuscript... I´m not sure how long it is because I don`´t currently have it in front of me but the last time I checked (last week) it was around 126,000 words and I have written some extra parts since then which I haven´t added in. That amount is going to be cut down anyway so I´ll update the word count when I can.
It´s a New Adult/Young Adult (NA seems way too new to list for most people as they tend not to know about it or not consider it) that is kinda sci-fi but it´s not really sci-fi (more speculative maybe?). Like X-Men set in essentially modern day without all of the high-tech future stuff or Dark Angel without the EMP... If that makes any sense.
Somewhat romance but not really as it doesn´t focus on the relationships and it´s not boy-meets-girl.

Synopsis: Whatever Troy Ferrais thought entrance exams to St. Joan´s Academy was going to be like, he never expected what happened. His school attacked and he, Kat Martinez (his girlfriend), two friends and a girl who considers herself to be Kat´s worst nightmare are sent to St. Joan´s, no questions asked, for their safety... If only it were that simple.
St. Joan´s is not safe. Every single student there is a metaphorical bomb, each one armed with fantastical gifts, each one more dangerous than the last.
And none are more dangerous than the St. Joan´s Elite; Max, a head-strong nineteen year old with breath-taking anger management issues and an extreme amount of power, Jake; a boy who knows a lot more than he should, Sam; a girl with issues although definitely the most normal out of the lot, Laurel; who has a fashion-obsession to hide her secrets, Jordan; a computer hacker who knows too much about machines and spends too much time with them for it to be normal and Roxy; who´s past is a mystery to almost every single person in the school.
But Kat was once a student at St. Joan´s before, an Elite member, with a secret too. She has a mysterious past with Max and she isn´t giving up the details anytime soon.
Then the dead body turns up and everything takes a turn for the worst.

Roxanne Shriver (roxannexshriver) What's the difference between an Alpha reader and a Beta reader?

Lois | 5 comments An alpha reader is someone who reads the first draft, or even a second or third draft (depends) of a manuscript (book) that has only been seen by the writer; at least for the majority of it. So it´s the first time it´s going to be edited by anyone other than the writer so it´s going to have a lot of problems (usually).
A beta reader is someone who reads/helps edit the work once a lot of people have seen it, maybe gone through a couple of redrafts, once it´s been edited a lot so it´s not rough but not perfect either.
Hope that helps!
(Now going to update my first post and put details on it!)

Roxanne Shriver (roxannexshriver) Ohh, I see.

... Then I've been referring to my Alpha reader by the wrong title this whole time.

Evan Mitchell Stark (starkattitudes) | 4 comments HI. I've been so verbose tonight in these places you get spared my usual tome.

I'm a mediocre writer. But I'm a rock star Alpha editor (in your parlance). I've been called a developmental editor and a mass change editor. I move tons of things around. The best compliments I've received, from scientists and novelists alike, is along the lines of "Now that you've worked on it, I can see what I was trying to say." I may be a masochist, because I genuinely love editing.

My problem at present is that I've been unwell. Moreover, I'm an altruist, love to help gratis, but I'm unable to do that now. So let me just say that if I can help in a small way—a quick read and some VERY general feedback—call on me. Warmly, Evan.

Lois | 5 comments Hi Evan,
(finally got around to replying)
I'm currently working on a redraft so would be okay to contact you when I've written around ten chapters? I'm reworking the beginning so I'm trying to wrap my brain around how I'm going to write that.
Also I have this major issue with trying to get the tones that I want...
I hope you're feeling better!
