If I remember correctly it was a hardcover book. The title was something like "The Year's Best in Science Fiction 19--". It was late 80's early 90's. My copy wasn't a paperback; however, it might have been released later in a paperback edition.

This is it! I could have sworn I read it earlier than 2002. Thank you so much Ayshe! Moderators, this can be marked as solved :)

The parts I remember - certain cities were lucky enough to have a "power" pyramid that watched over them, provided energy and helped them. Every so many years girls (and maybe boys, I know the protagonist was a girl and another pyramid she eventually conversed with was a girl) up to a certain age were allowed to apply to become a pyramid. It was considered a great honor. This girl put her name in, but didn't think she'd be chosen. Of course she ended up being chosen. I think she was in her early teens.
I don't remember the preparation part for being put in the pyramid. When she was sealed in, there were rooms set up to look like her home. She was supplied with energy bars in the flavors she liked. She wandered around the rooms. There was no day or night, so she ate when hungry, slept when tired. She didn't understand how she was supposed to work, but just kept going through her days. She tracked time by the wrapper pile of the energy bars which eventually grew into a pile higher than her.
One day, something in her just clicked. Suddenly she was part of the pyramid. When she checked on her family, her parents were divorced. Her father was watching a holographic ball game. He felt her checking and looked up. I don't remember what her mother or siblings were doing. Her best friend was now married and a doctor (I think she was a pediatrician) and was examining someone and also looked up when she felt her friend check on her.
The end of the story was a girl in another pyramid reaching out to her and saying either "Now you know" or "Now you understand."
Hopefully this rings a bell for somebody :)
