This is a really tough one. I read this book about 15 years ago and now I can't remember the name. It was probably published sometime between 1900 and 1925. It was about a fairly successful professional actress that had several successive lovers. The last one proposed to her, but she left the day before they were to be married. I think it might have a great name like the bacci or the dionysian. But I have looked up both of those and different variations on Amazon and no luck. It was one of my favorite books, please help!!!

Heather--are you SURE about that publishing date? And not just that that was when the story was set? Somehow I find it very hard to believe that a book would have made it into print at that time that was quite that racy.
It sounds vaguely like Sister Carrie, which actually was published about that time. But I must agree, the theme does seem a little racy for the turn of the century.
I am not sure that is when the book was published. I am about 80% sure. I read that book and a book called The Constant Nymph by Margaret Kennedy at about the same time. They had similar binding and were in about the same shape. They were both first (and only) editions, so I am assuming that they were about the same age. I could be wrong. And for anyone that thinks THAT sounds racy for 1900-1925 read The Constant Nymph, it's practically Lolita. (But yes it was too racy to be popular.)
Heather, Please come back and let us know. (Hmm...I think that I read that book but if so it was ages ago and I don't remember it.)
