Heather | 8548 comments I guess I'm not so up with the current art world, and we haven't talked about these artists either, but I don't know # 3, 4, and 5. And I'm surprised any of those three 'unknowns' are "worth" more than Richter and Hockney! Well, whatever! haha

message 20: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8548 comments Man! In that picture, Damien Hirst does look like someone who would slice up animals and put them in formaldehyde! It's in his eyes, I guess. Or, it's just me.

Schnabel is known as a painter primarily. And yes, he is over rated.

Heather | 8548 comments So, the Art Story defines him as "American Filmmaker, Painter, Printmaker, and Sculptor". Let's see...

Portrait of Andy Warhol

Artwork description & Analysis: With his eerie portrait of fellow artist Andy Warhol, executed on black velvet, Schnabel has united low culture, pop art, and the high-art tradition of portraiture. The painterly style and palette are reminiscent of works by El Greco and Francis Bacon. Warhol stands dramatically alone on the right side of the composition in a sea of black velvet. Telltale paint splatters and smears partially cover the middle and the right side of the image, adding balance and mysterious depth to the composition. Known for his controlled and almost emotionless portraits of celebrities and the otherwise infamous that emphasized the homogeneity of visual reproductions, Warhol is ironically depicted with tremendous expressive impact in this portrait by Schnabel.

Oil on velvet - Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, D.C.

Interesting. Hmmm, what does he imply by that?

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments Which comment are you referring to when you ask "what does he imply by that"?

I was referring to the analysis of the painting of Warhol above your comment. I don't get it.

message 26: by Geoffrey (new)

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments ????? Simply that with Andy Warhol's paintings, the subjects never exhibit emotion, whereas with Schnabel's portrait of Warhol, Warhol is depicted as having emotion.
Which is why I think Warhol's work is crap.

message 27: by Heather (new)

Heather | 8548 comments Right. A Campbell Soup can doesn’t show much emotion at all.

message 28: by Geoffrey (new)

Geoffrey Aronson (geaaronson) | 930 comments nor do any of his paintings of famous people
