Carry On
question
Maybe a little too inspired by Harry Potter?

Did anyone that has started reading or finished reading Carry On find themselves drawing way too many parallels between this book and the Harry Potter series? It's been a little disappointing for me, because I'm reading this book and just finding myself thinking about Harry Potter and I'm not even half way through. Don't get me wrong, it's very well written.
I loved the book, but it's a bit flawed (you'll see). Anyway it doesn't look like it's a little inspired. It is VERY inspired by Harry Potter and that's kinda why I like it even more. This is basically HarryxDraco canon fanfic I needed XD.
if you read fangirl you will know that the protagonist is an university student who publishes her own fanfic online and that they follow the story of Simon being in love with Baz and vice versa. Of course it has similarities with Harry Potter Carry on is a fanfic of an alternative world but is still essentially a world (in my opinion) very well created by Rainbow Rowell.
I finished reading Carry On about a year ago. I thought that this book was good in its very own special way but it became a little inspired by Harry Potter. But I think that does not matter, because it is definite that we take inspirations from everywhere and everyone.
as daniel said, the idea for this book came from rowell's previous book, fangirl. in that one the main character was writing a fanfiction based on a series that was LITERALLY just harry potter with different names. there wasn't really anything more to it, because there wasn't a need.
but, rowell said that although the fangirl universe had come to a satisfying end, she felt that simon and baz's world had not.
of course, from afar, it may seem like a direct rip-off of harry potter, and that makes sense, considering harry potter was the starting point. but i think rowell effectively created a new universe with new characters and plotlines!! if you can look past the similarities, i think this book is definitely worth reading and loving :')

I actually found it to be quite different when looking at it from afar. Each school gives me a completely different vibe but, yes, similarities are there. I'm not as dedicated to Harry Potter as others so that might be why I don't get too many H.P. vibes. Hope you enjoyed Carry On though ^^
I loved this book. yes there may have been many similarities, but hre were many differences as well. it was just like a HarryxDraco fanfic that I would love. it was anamazing book and the different twists in the story made it even better. I hope others enjoyed the book as well!
I enjoyed this book but I felt it was way too similar too Harry Potter as well. I did read fangirl first so I went into it expecting that.
I really liked the book and i personally think it´s very inspired by Harry Potter. i also kinda felt like, it was a fanfiction-crossover between Harry Potter, Percy Jackson and maybe some other books (just throw some characters from other books in the HP universe and change the names). But was it too much? I don´t think so. At least for me. It still felt like a different story with some special features and i think it is okay and it doesn´t make the book any less good.
Sure its inspired. But for me it just meant more good reading material in the genre that I love. And I think its just different enough to make it interesting. I mean the characters from Carry on were actually quite different from the characters from hp. Sure, the schools were a bit similar but I've been homesick for Hogwarts anyway so I actually didn't mind.
to be honest? just dont think about it. dont compare it. i just respected the caracters as their own i guess? it didnt bother me at all.. if u just dont think about it :D
All books are a bit flawed, for multiple different reasons. There are some similarities, but the plots are entirely different. I think this chosen one trope has been beautifully taken by Harry Potter which means whenever you think of Chosen One, you think HP. Or wizard, HP etc. Now I love Harry Potter but apart from some details that are mainly in all books, Chosen One, School etc. the book is its own. So many books are inspired by other books and it's the same with music and other works of art. J.K.Rowling was able to write a masterpiece with Harry Potter and Rainbow Rowell was able to write a masterpiece with Carry On, both entirely different and original in their own ways. i dont get why people are always comparing the book to HP series. I mean, yes they are similar, but u dont have to complain about it every chance you get. Even the author admitted this. I have never thought while reading the book that '' omg..i cant read this is so similar to HP..so annoying'' CAUSE at one point u just give a bad review based only on that,, respect the book as it is!
Others may see your 'so similar to HP..i dont like it' and will never touch the book. Which is sad.

I mean I definitely see much of harry potter in it, but I like them both for different reasons. This book was not perfect, but every time I think about chapter 32 I get soooo happy! Can't think of a chapter in Harry Potter like that
