Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett has no idea that someone is out to kill him. A ruthless man blames Joe for the death of his family and will stop at nothing to destroy Pickett. Meanwhile, Opal Scarlett, the local matriarch of the Scarlett family and owner of a hugely sprawling ranch has disappeared. Two of her sons, Arlen and Hank, viciously oppose one another as to rightful inheritance to the ranch. Pickett is convinced that one of these two men murdered Opal and Joe is determined to find the truth. Hank hires a new man to work his side of the ranch, and to do other 'necessary' things, who seems to have another agenda. The family feud, the disappearance of Opal and the shadowy figure targeting Pickett is headed for a deadly end.

I just love this series. Joe Pickett is a flawed hero but one that you can truly root for. I'm looking forward to the next book.
