The Beautiful and Damned question

I read somewhere in a fiction book that “smart women want to be told they’re pretty and pretty women want to be told they’re smart” but I cannot remember where. I’m almost sure it was a male author and for some reason Fitzgerald is ringing a bell but not 100% sure! Please help it’s driving me crazy.
