I read this about 7 or 8 years ago. A man signs up for scientific exploration to the Arctic. He doesn't have much money and regrets having to buy a round of drinks for the other explorers before they leave.

The trip is cursed and the others all drop out slowly until he is the only one left in a cabin to keep measuring the instruments. I remember that one of the sledge dogs gets it head trapped in a can of food and when he's released becomes friends with the Main Character.

Spoilers - at the end the man and the dog are on an island in the tropics because it's as far away as they can get from whatever was haunting them.
