Arlene - I believe that you have to pick a shelf picker for December. We usually do that around the 20th of the month or so. I believe that you would use the names in the "Paranormal read for October" thread and pick someone who has not been a shelf picker before. You can find out from the mods if that is correct.

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments Thanks, Lyn! GMTA! I was just looking at the calendar and noticing how far into November we already are! Where does the time go? And you are correct. Arlene uses the reviews posted in October to choose our next shelf picker. I'll send her a quick email to make sure she knows.

message 53: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Do we have a shelf picker for December? November ends on Monday. I know it went quick!

message 54: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments I sent Arlene a message just after my post above, but haven't heard back from her yet. I'll send a follow-up message right now. In a regular month, I would say just under a week left still gave us plenty of time, but Thanksgiving sort of changes things for the end of November. Sorry, all! I should have started sending messages sooner.

I am sending a message to him to him. This has been fun!

Hey Luann, we are just OCD about this group. Can't wait to get started on the next shelf. Congrats photojim!!

Arlene - I really enjoyed the Asia shelf. Thanks for picking it.

message 57: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments Congrats photojim!!!

Arlene- I loved the shelf this month, even though I only got to one book :(
I have several more books that fit on the shelf that I have just gotten, but most likely won't finish in time. I loved that it offered so many different options!

message 58: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments Yay, Photojim! We await your pick.

Thanks, Arlene! I'm still in the middle of my second Asian book for this month, and plan to finish before Monday.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) I'm excited to be picked! Now to go back and make sure my choice has not been used for the past 24 months. I will have a choice posted by tomorrow night at the latest.

Thanks for the honor.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) I have it! Since the holiday season can be a trying time for all of us, we need to remember to have a sense of humor. Thus the shelf for December is HUMOR.

I look forward to seeing everyone's Humor books.

message 61: by Rora (new)

Rora Great category Photojim. I've had one of the Discworld books on my to-read pile for awhile. Now it will finally get read. : )

message 62: by Cam (new)

Cam Great choice for setting the mood Photojim, looking forward to it.

message 63: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments Love the choice, I need a little humor in my life!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Humor is such a great choice Jim, and here I thought you were going to choose Harlequins,(Just kidding, lol) :)

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) I've cut back on my Harlequin addiction, thank you very much. I only read three Harlequins this month (four if you count the one I'll finish tonight) out of 18. Of course I was finishing out my Sookie Stackhouse addiction. And I had to read at least one Asian book that I would not have read otherwise.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
I just got the first 7 Sookie Stackhouse books, so I am about to start MY Sookie Stackhouse addiction.

message 67: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments Oh Lyn enjoy! :0)
The Sookie Stackhouse series is one of my favourite

message 68: by Sara (new)

Sara (hoot31) | 196 comments Great choice! Humor is definitely good for the holiday and the soul ;-)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Thanks Mel, that's what I hear. I have been on the wait list for the first one at the library for about 4 months, then my sister gave me the first 7 for my birthday.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) Lyn, I guess that's a happy birthday to you! My only question is, what are you waiting for? Get to reading! BTW, my favorites are #3, #8, and #9.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
My sister said her favorite so far is #3, and I am going to start one this weekend!

message 72: by Pollyanna (new)

Pollyanna (polly8) | 94 comments Great shelf pick photojim, I am going to look now at what fits into that from my TBR pile :)

message 73: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Luann, don't worry about the whole shelf thing. Like the other Lyn said... we just look so forward to perusing the new shelf each month. This group is truly the best!

I really enjoyed the Asian reads. I am finishing "The Good Earth" right now. What an amazing book.

Can't wait to get started on humor. I might read "A Christmas Story" to combine Christmas AND humor! Great pick Photojim.

message 74: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (JenJen1221) | 61 comments Great pick Photojim!!! I think some of the books I plan to read in December will fit into this shelf : )

message 75: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (ossycolly) Great pick for this time of year Jim.

message 76: by Steven (new)

Steven (yam655) | 26 comments I know the month is only barely half over, but the end of this particular month can be quite busy for a lot of folks.

I'd favor knowing the new picker before the 20th, rather than after the 20th, as once the new picker is announced, they may want to think about the new genre for a day.

Jim, do you know when you plan to select the next picker? I'm not saying I think it needs to be done right away, it's just something that can easily be forgotten with the abundance of seasonal gatherings a lot of folks have.

Jim son of Jim (formerly PhotoJim) (jim_formerly_photojim) In fact I went through the Asian post yesterday and compiled a list of possibles. Then I removed those who have been pickers before. Now I just have to print the names left, cut them into pieces, and throw them into the hat for my scientific method of selection. I'll do that this morning and send a message to the winner to confirm they are willing to be the next picker before it is announced here. If all goes as planned, we will have our next picker named today.

message 78: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments Perfect! Thanks for taking the initiative, Steven and Jim!!

message 83: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Yay, Lyn! Looking forward to seeing your selection!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
I am so excited!!

So guys - I thought about this all night, it's actually harder to "pick-a-shelf" than I thought. After much thought, I have decided on "mystery-thriller", since I am in the mood to cozy up to a good mystery in front of the fire in January. It is slightly different than "mystery" itself, and that was a long time ago, anyway.

I will post the threads.

message 85: by Sara (new)

Sara (hoot31) | 196 comments Good choice Lyn! I have been in a cozy mystery mood lately...can't wait!

Tara | 742 comments Yay Lyn!! Great Selection! I am so excited that you finally got to pick a shelf... I know you have been waiting a while!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
I was beginning to think I was "invisible", lol.

message 91: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 145 comments This is a wonderful choice - I have lots of mystery-thrillers on my bedroom TBR shelf. It is probably my favorite shelf. (OK, I will read almost anything, even cereal boxes, but I love mysteries!)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
Arlene - I love the line about cereal boxes. I always say that I will read anything once. In another group, we were talking about how you pick what to read, like by reviews, the hype, etc. and I mentioned that I have several ways I decide whether to put a book on my TBR. So--one of the other members tried to put me down, and sarcastically said, "So -- if it has pages you will read it." (this person is somewhat of a book snob) and I said, "Thanks for my new motto!"

message 93: by Sara (new)

Sara (hoot31) | 196 comments Lyn and Arelene you crack me up!

message 94: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments I love that motto!!

message 95: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 145 comments Oh Lyn, I won't read just anything, my husband reads cosmology and I don't even try to read those books! I personally don't like horror and rarely read non-fiction but other than that .........
Years ago when I started reading The Lord of the Rings I was offended to find the next book in the series on the Sci-Fi shelf, I thought Sci-Fi wasn't fit to read (I hadn't read any at that time) Then I discovered that the shelf was really Fantasy/Sci-Fi so that made it okay. Later, when I was in the Peace Corps and starved for books, I read The Martian Chronicles and Ray Bradbury. Now Anne McCaffrey is one of my favorite authors and I really like Carl Sagan. I did like The Stand but probably won't read any other Stephen King or Anne Rice. I guess that makes me somewhat of a "book snob" but, hey, I know what I like.

message 96: by Colleen (new)

Colleen (ossycolly) Great choice Lyn

message 97: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Congrats on being the "Shelf Picker" Sis. Does this mean I FIANLLY get to quit hearing you whine about how you haven't been picked yet? :) LOL

Good choice too...I have Rumpole, Mrs. Jefferies, and Sherlock Holmes to look forward to. OOh, and maybe the "Maltese Falcon"

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
The Maltese Falcon is so great. We just watched the movie with Joe recently.

message 99: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Never seen the movie. I want to read the book first, and it is on several challenges!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) | 2895 comments Mod
*drumroll*

Using a real scientific method (a random pick out of a bowl) I have determined that the shelfpicker for February is --- SUNFLOWER-----.

Congrats Sunflower, and happy picking.

Luann - thanks for the update.
