Arlene - I believe that you have to pick a shelf picker for December. We usually do that around the 20th of the month or so. I believe that you would use the names in the "Paranormal read for October" thread and pick someone who has not been a shelf picker before. You can find out from the mods if that is correct.

In a regular month, I would say just under a week left still gave us plenty of time, but Thanksgiving sort of changes things for the end of November. Sorry, all! I've cut back on my Harlequin addiction, thank you very much. I only read three Harlequins this month (four if you count the one I'll finish tonight) out of 18. Of course I was finishing out my Sookie Stackhouse addiction. And I had to read at least one Asian book that I would not have read otherwise.

I really enjoyed the Asian reads. I am finishing "The Good Earth" right now. What an amazing book.

I know the month is only barely half over, but the end of this particular month can be quite busy for a lot of folks.

I'd favor knowing the new picker before the 20th, rather than after the 20th, as once the new picker is announced, they may want to think about the new genre for a day.

Jim, do you know when you plan to select the next picker? I'm not saying I think it needs to be done right away, it's just something that can easily be forgotten with the abundance of seasonal gatherings a lot of folks have.

In fact I went through the Asian post yesterday and compiled a list of possibles. Then I removed those who have been pickers before. Now I just have to print the names left, cut them into pieces, and throw them into the hat for my scientific method of selection. I'll do that this morning and send a message to the winner to confirm they are willing to be the next picker before it is announced here. If all goes as planned, we will have our next picker named today.

So guys - I thought about this all night, it's actually harder to "pick-a-shelf" than I thought. After much thought, I have decided on "mystery-thriller", since I am in the mood to cozy up to a good mystery in front of the fire in January. It is slightly different than "mystery" itself, and that was a long time ago, anyway.

This is a wonderful choice - I have lots of mystery-thrillers on my bedroom TBR shelf. It is probably my favorite shelf. (OK, I will read almost anything, even cereal boxes, but I love mysteries!)

Arlene - I love the line about cereal boxes. I always say that I will read anything once. In another group, we were talking about how you pick what to read, like by reviews, the hype, etc. and I mentioned that I have several ways I decide whether to put a book on my TBR. So--one of the other members tried to put me down, and sarcastically said, "So -- if it has pages you will read it." (this person is somewhat of a book snob) and I said, "Thanks for my new motto!"

Oh Lyn, I won't read just anything, my husband reads cosmology and I don't even try to read those books! I personally don't like horror and rarely read non-fiction but other than that .........
Years ago when I started reading The Lord of the Rings I was offended to find the next book in the series on the Sci-Fi shelf, I thought Sci-Fi wasn't fit to read (I hadn't read any at that time) Then I discovered that the shelf was really Fantasy/Sci-Fi so that made it okay. Later, when I was in the Peace Corps and starved for books, I read The Martian Chronicles and Ray Bradbury. Now Anne McCaffrey is one of my favorite authors and I really like Carl Sagan. I did like The Stand but probably won't read any other Stephen King or Anne Rice. I guess that makes me somewhat of a "book snob" but, hey, I know what I like.
