One of my favorites. It's not at all like the movies though.

I have Let the Right One In and The Gates on my bookshelf now, so hopefully I will get to those.
Of course, I have been looking for a reason to read Anna Dressed in Blood so maybe I can get my hands on it.

Do we have a May icon yet? I just noticed that our group page still says "Our April shelf is ..." It may be the mods are waiting to change that with the icon.

Vi, could you PM me on your choice of avatar, please? Tx!! :)

Oh, I hope you're feeling better soon, Kazza. Names and avatars can certainly wait till you do.

Our June Shelf Picker is D.G. ~Shameless Hussy~
I've dropped her a message. Can't wait for the next shelf :)
Thanks, Kazza for reminding me.

I'm looking around for an avi and should send it too you in a day or so, Kazza.
Well, DG, it looks like I will finally get Beloved read as it is on this shelf.
Why, oh why, are the Harry Potter books here? I personally am getting tired of seeing them on every shelf - finally! I know that others reached that point long before I did...well, here I am.

Because they were banned somewhere (they really were.) So at least it makes sense in this one.

I think they were banned in some areas because they promoted witchcraft. I remember when there were people fighting to see them banned.
I stand corrected. I never would have thought the Harry Potter books would earn a banned label. Guess that goes to show that someone can dislike any book enough to ban it.

It's funny that you should pick this shelf I was looking at it a few days ago to see what was on there. Great choice! Maybe I should do the monthly shelf with you guys my problem is that I can't juggle to many books at once.

(Oh my goodness...I just realized I actually managed to get something read for this month's Horror shelf pick, and I haven't reviewed it. I'll try to get that done in the next couple of days. *jots note to self*)
Great choice, D.G.. I just looked, though, and I have already read about 90% of the books on the first two pages, lol. There are several good choices still on the list, though.
Great choice, D.G.!
But I'm puzzled about all the duplicates. Several books even appear on the first page more than once. At first I thought they were different editions, but I checked out the two listings for 1984, and they even seem to have the same ISBN, and already listed as comgined. So why would they be listed separately on the shelf, with different numbers of times shelved?
Can someone who's more versed with GR than I figure it out?

I noticed that too, Susan. Probably some of the recent crazyness that's been happening in the site.
Susan, I have also noted that books I have read will have my rating in one place and not in another! I have been seeing this over the past month...really annoying with the multiple iterations of the same book.

You're probably right, Dee. But it does seem strange to be seeing so many all of a sudden. And it's way beyond my level of expertise to do it.

I don't think so because then the avg. ratings and # of ratings would be different. If you see 'Catcher in the Rye', both listings show the same info:
avg rating 3.74 — 925,747 ratings — published 1951
If they were different editions that needed to be combined, at least the avg. rating would be different.
I'll open a thread in the Feedback group because I've seen it in other shelves.

Great, D.G. When you do, notice that, for the 2 listings of "1984" on the first page, the avg. ratings and the # of ratings ARE different. So there might be two different things going on.

1984 (Paperback)
by George Orwell (shelved 57 times as banned-books)
avg rating 4.02 — 753,451 ratings — published 1949
1984 (Paperback)
by George Orwell (shelved 30 times as banned-books)
avg rating 4.02 — 753,451 ratings — published 1949
The only thing different is the # of times shelved.

You're right. I was going on memory, and had the fact that they were shelved a different number of times as banned-books confused with the other.

It makes little sense to me, either, Vivian, but then neither do most bans.
I Googled it, and several "reasons" were cited on differing occasions of challenge/attempt to ban: glorifying violence, satanism, suicide, and cannibalism, "supernatural elements" such as demons and ghosts, and "suggestive illustrations", as well as encouraging children to be "disobedient"

Both the Merriam Webster and the American Heritage Dictionaries have been banned in various schools. The Merriam Webster was banned in a California elementary school in January 2010 for its definition of oral sex. "It's just not age appropriate," a district representative said.
Yes, even THE DICTIONARY has been banned.
