Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments hmmm, lemme see...august is going to be a rough month with grad school - but hopefully i'll find something

Thanks, Natasha!

Now, ... to try to find books ... is this part of the new switch to genres?
Where's the plain old list of books on the shelf like we always used to see? I see I can get to a list of "popular" sociology books, or "most read this week" sociology books. Is that it, or am I missing something?

message 553: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments yeah - i'm not a fan of the new genre thing because it seemed to be introduced very hapazardly and people combining stuff all the time, but here you go - http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show?s... - this link worked better for me

message 554: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments I started the August folder for What will you read, and posted the actual shelf link in it. The new genre system erks me, as it's a bit of a runaround to get to the shelves, but what can you do? ;op
Have fun choosing everyone, can't wait to see what you pick

message 555: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments I'm not a fan of the genre system either. There are too many books shelved in the wrong shelves out there and now they are showing up in the wrong genres.

Not only do you have to come up with an avatar...I have to come up with something clever/interesting for the "Page 46" thread title. THANKS A LOT!!! (LOL) I did find some really interesting books to look for at the library tomorrow though! :)

message 557: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments I'm looking forward to the avatar! That's a difficult one, Natasha. :)

message 558: by Lynne (new)

Lynne (lmsindel) Alright Natasha...the pressure in on you. I found a quote for my thread! (laughs maniacally)

message 559: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 145 comments Wow! This is a hard one for me, I rarely read non-fiction and it seems that most of the books on this shelf are that. I only found a few that I have already read. But I always try - that's why I joined this group!

Arlene,
There are several by Steinbeck there, and Ayn Rand, Franz Kafka; also Orwell, Camus, Tolstoy, Fitzgerald -- basically fiction that makes a social commentary. Night, by Elie Wiesel, is amazing and powerful. And there are several by Bill Bryson, who is not exactly my cup of tea, but he writes lightly and with humor, and a lot of people like him. I bet you can find something you'll enjoy.

Lynne (lmsindel) I have been eagerly awaiting the avatar. I think you did a great job, I love it!! YOu really came through.

message 564: by Candiss (last edited Aug 21, 2011 09:04PM) (new)

Candiss (tantara) My goodness, it's already the 21st! Where did the month go? Do we have an September shelf picker yet? (I woke up impatient today. ;) )

Edit: September, not August. *sigh*

message 565: by Luann (new)

Luann (azbookgal) | 1017 comments GMTA, Candiss! I messaged Natasha yesterday about choosing the next Shelf Picker. I usually try to get the ball rolling a little sooner in the month, but this month has been so busy for me with school starting that I didn't get to it until yesterday.

message 571: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments LOL Thanks Susan ;op
Thank you everyone I'm in the process of picking right now, my there are so many good ones too choose from I thought I had it all figured out but now I feel like a little girl in a candy store :0)

message 572: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments see, I would have thought you'd have one already picked out that you wanted to see since you've been around the group since the beginning ;)

message 573: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments LOL I did had a few actually, and after shopping around I'm actually sticking with one of my original picks ;op

Some of you will enjoy it, and some may have to really stretch out of your comfort zone which is the point, but I'm picking a genre that gets overlooked a lot and some book snobs actually don't consider them books. I love them as a teacher as they have developed a love of reading in boys I could never get to pick up a book. So drum roll,

I pick Graphic Novels

message 574: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments WTG, Slayermel! I confess I've never read one of those!

Although I have one in my TBR: Watchmen. Off to request it from the library!

message 575: by Dee (last edited Aug 25, 2011 09:04AM) (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments i have several on the first page alone that I want to read

message 576: by D.G. (new)

D.G. | 1370 comments LOL! I realized after I clicked on the shelf link that the book I'm planning to read is the first one listed on that page. :)

message 577: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments It is a popular one and also pretty good

message 578: by Candiss (new)

Candiss (tantara) Awesome, Slayermel! Now I have an excuse a reason to slip some graphic novels in between my various challenge books. ;)

message 579: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 660 comments I'm not really a graphic novel reader so this one is a stretch for me but that is why I love this group. Off to search the shelf.

message 580: by LynnB (new)

LynnB | 1769 comments Graphic novels are a bit of a stretch for me, though I have read The Complete Persepolis and Stitches and found both of them interesting. I've wanted to read The Complete Maus, so this will probably be my first choice. Off to check on the shelf and see what the library has too...

message 581: by Tara (new)

Tara | 742 comments Congrats Slayermel!!! It is about time! Great pick for a shelf too!

message 582: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 145 comments Ok, does my comic book edition of "Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land" count for this category? I must admit that I don't think I have read any graphic novels since I became an adult except for that one! lol

message 583: by Lahni (new)

Lahni | 660 comments All the Calvin and Hobbes books are on the list.

message 584: by Luann (last edited Aug 25, 2011 08:47PM) (new)

ETA: And what a fun shelf choice for an awesome group avatar! :)

Arlene,
Several comics I was considering turned out not to be on the shelf. To tell whether any book counts, you can go to the book, then click on "see top shelves". You have to find "graphic-novels" (or whatever the month's shelf is) somewhere there, on any page of the shelf list.

One disadvantage of this system is that new or relatively unknown books (like this one) aren't as likely to show up, because not enough people have read them and put them on shelves.

I know once recently someone added something to a shelf herself in order to count it, but that seems to me to be stretching things. The rule I've made for myself is that I won't add anything to a shelf that's not normally one of my own shelves. So I could add something to "magical-realism" because I do have that shelf already, but not to "graphic-novels" because I don't.

message 586: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments I think that was me and I totally did it by accident with the world lit ;) but I put it on the shelf like at the beginning of the month not even thinking about it and it did fit

Can someone tell me what ETA stands for? All I ever think when I see it is "estimated time of arrival" and I know thats not right! :) I keep trying to figure it out but I'm not having any luck.

Tara | 742 comments That is a great picture for the month, Slayermel!

message 591: by Slayermel (new)

Slayermel | 664 comments It was very hard to decide which root to go with the picture there where soooo many choices, so I went with the classic superhero ;op

@ Slayermel,

I wanted say thanks again for this month's shelf pick. I actually considered graphic novels last summer when it was my turn to choose, because I knew how some of my students loved them, while the few I'd read at the time hadn't done much for me. So I figured I needed to learn more about them.

But it was way out of my comfort zone, and I chose something I was more sure I'd enjoy. So now that you've chosen it, I can't pass up the challenge. And I'm loving the push to learn more about the history and the variety. Neither manga nor superheroes will probably ever be my thing. But I'm learning that the genre holds so much more!

Thanks again!!!

I'm so glad your enjoying it and have discovered there is so much more out there then just superhero's :0)
One of my favorite's is actually "The Crow" by James O'Barr. He was inspired to write it after a tragic incident in his own family. It's dark, sad and disturbing but a wonderful story all the same.

I think we agreed last month that the shelf-picker should be someone who hasn't picked in the past year. I know not a lot of people have been posting this month, but there are still 2 or 3 people eligible. (exclude me as well, since I picked in Sept. last year)

message 599: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments I think I might have confused ppl because I changed my user name from May when I picked last

message 600: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 2695 comments ok, just got a PM from Slayermel giving me the ok to pick...

so a bit of background, the last month (july and into August) I was writing my huge exam for my PhD. 4 weeks to write no more than 50 pages on 3 different topics. Because of this, I didn't have a lot of time to read, which royally sucked! But, I rediscovered my enjoyment for novella's and anthologies. So the shelf for October is:

Anthology

and can be found here: http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/a...

hopefully everyone finds something they like ;)
