This would have been published in the 80s or earlier. Two farm boys are going to pick berries. The narrator is carrying a rifle, and when he tries to squeeze through a fence, it goes off and kills his brother. He then goes off and picks berries before telling anyone. He delayed because he couldn't face what he had done, but his family and neighbors see him as a monster who went berrying while his brother laid there dead.

Kinda reminds of the plot for the movie The Stone Boy, but as far as I can tell, it wasn't based on a book.
The Stone Boy is a short story by Gina Berriault. She adapted it for the film.This summary may be longer than the story itself.
