There is a fairly famous short story--it's often anthologized--about people in an upscale home who fear their neighbors and begin building a fence or wall around the property, only to have their child become impaled on the fence. I cannot remember the story or the author's name, but it seems very applicable considering how things are going. Any help would be appreciated.

hah. literally one minute after I posted this message I found what I was looking for. The story is "Once Upon A Time" by Nadine Gordimer.
