ABANDONED. Fantasy - Travel through Earth - Elf - Changes once travelled

Hello,
I'm looking for a fantasy book that had Elf, humans and other characters that went on a journey through the earth and were changed.

There were different types of Elves (wood/forest elves, light/city elves).
After the small group of characters journeyed through the earth (on root systems I think) they were changed in certain ways.
The main female elf character received some powers I think.

Not a lot of information sorry, I beleived I read it about 15 years ago.
