ABANDONED. Mystery Adventure about a man looking for answers. Involves nazis and kidnappings

Its a thick book and I have a picture in my mind about the cover but I dont know if its correct. I keep thinking there's a nazi flag on it. It reminds me of Dan Browns Da Vinci Code. The hero goes on a quest, travelling from place to place following leads and he winds up in the sahara desert. Somewhere along the way he's kidnapped and dumped in the desert or he's kidnapped in the desert but he's wondering around and stumbles upon or is brought to a hidden underground base and there are nazis and they possibly have preserved the body of hitler (not sure about that) and they're going to try and revive him or at least, raise the third reich to dominance, so this guy has to prevent that.
He may have been an archaeologist or there may have been one at oxford or cambridge.
I think what happens is there is a professor that sends the hero a message but when the hero gets to the university to see the professor, he's gone missing and the hero sets out to find him. Alternatively there may have been a mass shooting or terrorist attack at the university and the professor may have been killed.
I read the book sometime around 1996 or 97 so the memory isn't that clear.


Please help me find this book.
