How did you find this group?

In the January NYRB newsletter we get a mention! It reads:

"If one of your New Year's resolutions is to read more...
...perhaps consider joining a book group? There's a great one over at Goodreads entirely devoted to the NYRB Classics series that has been running for years. We can vouch for the members and moderators: they are all true-blue NYRB Classics nerds."

So....I'm curious. How did you discover this GR group?

I joined a few years ago as my NYRB collection grew. Was simply looking around for forums to discuss these wonderful books and here we are!

I asked an IRL friend one day, "So, what do you do with this Goodreads thing?" One of the things that she mentioned was this group, which sounded interesting to me, as I had very much enjoyed the few NYRB books that I had read. (I should say that I have enjoyed them both as literary works, and as physical objects--these are well chosen and well designed books!)

I guess I joined a few years ago. As others have mentioned, I, too, owned and sought out the NYRB imprint, have been doing so for years. I must have stumbled on this group and decided to join. I don't belong to many GR groups, but this one looked interesting and appears to have some very well-read and/or widely read (as in a range of interests) .participants. Oh, and I was a book club member (the subscription one ) for a few years, then dropped it but have now reinstated. Not that I need more books, oh well, it's a disease I've learned to live with!

I agree, Jeff. I love beautiful books. I came to GR, grudgingly, when Shelfari was shut down. That shutting of Shelfari was devastating to a lot of people. Some groups had formed real friendships, had long running threads, and all of it was gone with a few weeks notice. I didn’t really care except Shelfari was designed better with nesting discussions, and bookshelves that looked like real shelves, you could even choose the color of the wood. I found Shelfari when Ron Charles, The WaPo Book reviewer, joked on one of his video reviews that he could read a book or go on a Shelfari and talk about books. I checked into Shelfari and discovered a world of book obsessed readers and felt I’d found my people!

Hi. I'm new to the group. I used to belong years ago, but the group seemed to die then. I came across it again while browsing and I was so pleased I joined up again.

I would love to have a subscription to NYRB books, but the price of delivery to New Zealand is expensive. So any books that I really want, I order through Book Depository - much more reasonable. I have Berlin Alexanderplatz in my TBR pile, so I intend to start reading soon.

Welcome back Cordelia! I'm so glad you decided to rejoin. Yes, the subscription is very expensive for non Americans, not sure why that is. I get mine delivered to a friend in the US and pick them all up when I see her a couple times of year so I have a long wait sometimes to get my books.

I have recently subscribed to a few indie presses in the UK and shipping is quite affordable. I'm not sure why NYRB is so expensive.

It is a shame shipping is so costly. I only know of one indie press that has half price shipping worldwide. Book Depo is a very good option though, You can’t beat free shipping!

Antonomasia told me that you have a group read of Katalin Street coming up in March, and since I am currently reading that (in the new Maclehose Press British edition, which is the same Len Rix translation), I thought I should investigate the group.

I don't have a huge collection of NYRB Classics, mostly because availability in the UK can be limited, and I have too many other groups on the go to give much of a commitment beyond that at this stage...

Welcome to the group Hugh! I hope you will stick with us. Not every book will be everyone's cup of tea but do read those that interest you. Even if it's not a group read, we'd love to hear your thoughts on any NYRB Classic you read. There is a thread for every single book.

Good to see you here, Hugh. I hope we choose some books you are interested in throughout the year. I have a few subscriptions now: nyrb, Galley Beggar, Two Lines, and I just ordered the 2018 bundle from Charco; and I’m in a few other groups: The M&G, The Roundtable, Newest Literary Fiction, all of which can eat into my somewhat limited reading time. I can’t keep up with every group if I want to actually read any books so I will participate in which ever group is reading and/or discussing the books I am currently reading or have recently read. In other words I choose my group by my book, not the other way round.
