Just tagged my first mailing exchange buddy for 2019 and the new format worked easily.
Bonuses: This new tagging exchange will introduce me to someone new every month, which also means a fresh look at books other members are reading.
Happy New Year, Rift! I think this is a brilliant solution - it means we can all carry on enjoying sending and receiving lovely postcards without feeling that it might be a burden to you. With any luck, glitches will occur rarely and won't need too much attention.

Happy new year Rift! You need to figure out what works for you and what makes it the most enjoyable. This way seems good so far. We have to try it out for a month or two and see how it works. Don’t worry too much. Eventually everything will fall into place. This should not feel like a job for you. It should be something you like to do and that brings you joy.
Does you have to "Friend" a person in order to message them?

Hi David!
Occasionally, you may have to "friend" someone before you can send a message... there are a few people who have privacy settings to only accept messages from friends.
If you'd rather not friend anyone extra, that's perfectly fine! You can just message me, and I'll get you and your partner set up.

I love the new format because people can sign up and and get the card out promptly before something unexpected happens. They won't sign up if it isn't a good time for them. It sucks to wait months for a card.

It sucks to wait months ..."I know what you mean ... I still haven't received my November card.
This new format is GREAT! I like the idea of editing your 'sign-up' post with updates that you yourself sent out your card. This way people know if their assigned person has sent it and possibly something went astray. Win/Win!
I see that there seems to be an issue with some people receiving messages if they are not "friends". I have never experienced that. Is that a setting people have? I do not want to have to friend someone just to send a PC. Do you think we should have members with this setting indicate that in their message going forward? My only thought is that if I run across that I will just indicate the person to just skip sending one to me.
Anyone have thoughts?

I do not want to have to friend so..."I agree I don't want to friend everyone and I think its pretty innocuous to change your setting so everyone can message each other. If you're sending your address to people, why can't people you don't know send you a message on here? Just my two cents.
I haven't gotten any random messages from strangers in all my years here on GR
And for a little added bonus, for my little group, the person I'm sending to asked for my address and I asked for the address of the one sending to me so we will get two postcards each!
It is a setting. I changed my last night. I had it set to only receive messages from friends.

The new system seems to be working really well. I think it’s great to get members interacting with each other.

Happy New Year Rift! This is a great idea. This will allow for more interaction amongst members and not be such a big job for yourself. Thank you for all your hard work with the group over the years!
I’m trying to edit my original post and can’t. It won’t pop up to edit if I tap my message or hold my finger on my message. I also can’t find a button anywhere. I know I have edited my messages before so unsure what is going on. Help please

Yeah, Veronica is correct. The Mobile version of GR is not perfect when it comes to groups. Some people can't post at the group, some can't edit their post. humph!

On that page, it basically says to scroll down to the very bottom of the page. In the bottom, right corner, right underneath "© 2019 Goodreads, Inc." there's a text link to switch the version.
If you are currently using the mobile app the text link says "Desktop version" click that, and you should have access to all the posting options in the group.
If you are currently using the Desktop version, the text link says "Mobile version" so you can switch back.

Our old format -- with me messaging everyone individually with mailing partners -- worked well when we had less than 50 players each month. I have made it work for several years with 60 to 80 players. In 2018 we had over 100 players in September and November!
I am totally excited to have so many members wanting to send mail!
But with such high member participation, the postcard exchange has become more of a part-time job: I am spending hours every day, day-in and day-out, on hosting duties. Not to mention the everyday frustrations and annoyances since GR is just the wrong platform for doing this.
It's too much time and stress for a hobby, and I don't want to do it any more.
So the new format. Change is difficult, and the first round will be tough! I know it. And it's okay!
On this thread... I'll be responding to questions and any kind of comments. I'd like to develop a FAQ, and all your thoughts are welcome!
