Jackie (athena78) | 74 comments First of all, I'm not giving this book 5 stars because I'm not dying to get the next book of this 3-book series. That being said, I did enjoy the story. It's a good action/adventure with a little fantasy thrown in the mix.

Quick summary:

-Laia is a free girl turned slave/spy trying to save her brother, who was thrown in prison for rebellion.
-Elias is a warrior in training who doesn't want to be. He may be a warrior for the Empire, but he's not free and the cruelty of his position pushes him to considering deserting.
-By the end of this first book, Laia and Elias realize that even though they come from different tiers of society, they both desire freedom and justice (true moral justice).

The author writes from 1st person POV between the 2 main characters, Laia and Elias, and does a very good job eventually merging their story line to one. The meat of the story is pretty well established and there is a 'love square'...yes, four people...and two of them can't make up their mind who they like more. It's kind of annoying. The two main characters lack some common sense and it gets a little irritating when events are taking place and it's obvious what's happening, but the characters don't seem to figure it out until after it occurs. I would have liked to seen more intelligence, but maybe it will be better in the next book. Book 2 and 3 have been added to my TBR.

If you're looking for a fun, fast, and entertaining read then I'd recommend this as a good read. However, if you're looking for a book that challenges your mental capacity, ideals and/or moral fiber, then I'd move on to something with a little more substance.

KateNZ | 4102 comments It’s sitting on my shelves too - I’ve been meaning to get to it. This will be the year! And having something that is not too demanding would be just fine.

Susie I have really enjoyed this series thus far and I’m looking forward to the next installment. I even managed to convince my mostly non-reading (of fiction at least) husband to read them!

annapi | 5505 comments I enjoyed the first two books and have acquired book 3, but with all the binging I did I forgot about it. I will have to make time for it soon!

How fun! Do you and your hubby often read books and discuss? My ex was never much of a reader..as I devoured books, he played video games.

I find non-fiction hard to read, but I've ran across a few books that kept my interest. Naming them, however, would be impossible as it's been so long since I read one.

Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments I also really enjoyed the first book but it did not leave me dying to get to the next installment, and I haven't continued on with the series.

Honestly, I am a little over this whole YA trilogy thing. If the subsequent books are not yet released, then I quickly forget the details and lose interest by the time the next book is released. If the subsequent books are released, I often do not have the inclination to read multiple YA books in a row.

I didn't used to be like that, I used to LOVE YA. I think that my reading tastes have just veered a bit and I have no doubt that I will come back to YA trilogies at some point. And then I will finish these and finally really Holly Black and finally get to Cinder...

Susie Jackie, unfortunately not as much husband rarely reads, and when he does it is mostly sport related. Snore. He works in compliance in the banking industry and has to read a lot for his job, so he is less inclined to read during his down time. We are on holiday at the moment so he’s reading. I always choose books for him! He likes YA fantasy. He’s reading the Legend series.

Nicole, I feel the same about YA mostly. I agree that perhaps my tastes have evolved. I find myself eye rolling more than I used to! This series didn’t have that impact on me thankfully!

Has he tried Dick Francis? His mysteries are always related to horses or horse racing, with something else featured (painting, wine making, flying, newspapers, etc) that is very well researched. And the mysteries are very good.

Susie Thanks for the suggestions annapi. I’ll encourage him to give them a go.

I noticed, when looking through my TBR, that most on my lists are YA fantasies or just books in a series. Not many one-offs. I've already expanded my reading list just be joining this group. I felt I needed some exposure to other genres and already the 2019 challenges are making that happen.

Susie - yes...sometimes YA involves a lot of eye rolling! I've taken sneak peeks at books on Amazon and been like, nope...I'm not 17 and this does not happen.

Amy | 12953 comments As I have spoken about ad nauseum, my husband doesn’t read and my older two have been accused in the past of being a step above illiterate. All hands on the 8 year old who is addicted to computer games. But my husband does cart around the book Belonging from place to place. I’m so curious to see if it ever gets opened. He said of addicted to the news these days.

LOL,..I'm 40 and kind of addicted to gaming too, but on a console. I've been an on-again-off-again reader most of my adult life, but then I purchased my Kindle...that has changed my reading habits a lot! Book can come with me anywhere without worry of size. But I do miss flipping the paper pages.

Have your older kids read stuff like the Harry Potter series? I've got a niece who decided to listen to it on Audible and follow along in the book.
