It sounds a lot like Blake Crouch’s Dark Matter. I don’t think the protagonists name was Charlie. He has a child and a wife. Trades places with another version of himself. Sorry I can’t link to it I’m in the app.

OH MY GOSH. His son is named Charlie!I look for this book every year and bought it 2 years ago in one of the possibilities.
No. But THANK YOU.It was published in 2016. That was why I rejected it before.
:(
Enjoying the read though. May also enjoy God's Dice tomorrow.

Sorry! Maybe try googling: “Books like Dark Matter”? Or you could try googles, other readers also enjoyed function on the books page. (Website, not the app)
Thank you SO MUCH. I have been looking for it for over a decade and your guess was as close as it has ever come. His son is named Charlie, even. Wow.

Lol- that last comment was supposed to say GOODREADS** “readers also enjoyed”*However I tried it and nothing struck me as being like Dark Matter.
I hope you find it!

Was his name Charlie? He accidentally traveled to another universe that was very similar, maybe while he was sleeping. Through out the book he learned to travel and discovered that many of his alter lives had followed paths he had not chosen. But any number of things could cause a new parallel universe, even a cough.
May have been published 15 years ago.
In answer to questions:
Only that he was a middle aged man and may have had one child, a baby, in the book.
The book may have started with him being thrown into a parallel universe, trading places with someone who was pretty close to him.
