Ian Miller | 1857 comments I would hope that any such enhancement would be hardware only, and the brain would remain the OS. Maybe I am a silly optimist??

J. Gowin | 7977 comments I don't see how you get a successful interface without an OS. How far would you get without internet access protocols and some kind of firewall?

Ian Miller | 1857 comments You get to the one designated device (or a limited number more). That device gets to the internet. If you allow all and sundry in you would go mad very quickly. So the basic design must have something better than a firewall - it must totally block that which is not pre-selected as acceptable.

Nik Krasno | 19850 comments The cell phones already constitute brain explants.
Just trying to imagine a competition btw Chinese & American brain implants in 2035, coming with immediate knowledge of languages (yes, guys, you can master Mandarin in a sec) and manufacture's pre-installed channels -:)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8073 comments Ian, you said that in your view technology is neutral. That's what I say about guns. It's people who are the problem, and in both cases things can and will and have gone really wrong. Brain implants are neutral; what can be done with them relies on human nature, which I have no reason to trust. No matter what safeguards are put in place, there will always be a way to circumvent them.

Ian Miller | 1857 comments Indeed, there is no way to put a discovery back into Pandora's Box.

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8073 comments The discovery may be there, but I don't personally have to open that box. As long as I have that liberty.

Ian Miller | 1857 comments Unfortunately, usually someone else opens the box :-(
