I know just what you mean. An unknown, indescribable creature causing the apocalypse? That was completely the opposite of what I liked to read, but I gave it 5 stars.

I feel like House of Leaves is more of an experience than a book, if that makes any sense.

I've dipped into the former, reading a couple of stories and they were good. The latter is fun, as long as you don't demand too much of it. An enjoyable mystery thriller with a slight sf/horror edge to it.
