Sarah | 18549 comments I have no idea. I can't spend much more than 30 seconds looking at a screen before my eyes feel strained. Yes i've considered the sunglasses option.

Yes he's a cat. He was having a lot of fun pouncing and running around. He wasn't keen so much on the falling snow so kept sheltering under the trees and us. We're only taking him out supervised as we were concerned he might walk out on to the snow covered ice on the canal.

message 403: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Oh no, Sarah! Someone else probably walked by, saw them and picked them up. They are not cheap to replace either, are they?

Glad Beans is enjoying the snow! Our cats haven't been so keen. They have stayed inside pretty much all day. In fact, the only time I have seen any of them go outside was when Casper went out earlier to go to the toilet. I think it was his quickest pee ever! The other two seem to be doing a great job of holding their bladders so far! Lol.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments We've been getting snow and drifting since yesterday. I shovelled about 3" of the white stuff off my driveway this morning (4 hours ago), and it needs to be shovelled again.

That's too bad about your glasses Sarah!

message 405: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I'm still hoping i can find them when the snow melts. Fingers crossed. I'm now rocking the aviator sunglasses inside look.

Are they made of metal? Anyone you know that owns a metal detector?

I did thibk of that but unfortunately they are plastic frames except for the tiny hinges. The snow frozes hard last night so no chance of finding them until it thaws now. It's supposed to be -8C tonight which is the coldest i've known it to be forecasted around here. Mqyve i'll have some luck tomorrow when it thoughs. I'm not heopeful though.

message 409: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Yay! I found my glasses. It warmed up yesterday and we had a lot of rain overnight so all the snow has melted. I retraced my steps and found them intact, not even a scratch on them. I am so pleased!

Jenn | 3029 comments I’m so glad you found them Sarah! And, I’m glad you have warmed up a bit - we have not. Actually, that is a fib, it has warmed up to -40C so far this morning 🥶 makes me reeeeealy glad I don’t have to drive to my interview this morning lol
Stay warm everybody ❄️

message 415: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Haven't been around any of he socials lately. Just got done battling winter along with a bunch of other people I know. Got 4ft of snow with -30 to -40 temps. And since a large portion of my work is outside. It was fun. Today is like spring out. Craziness

message 416: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Glad you found your glasses, Sarah!

message 417: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I hadn't shaved in weeks or got a haircut. Was starting to look like Charles Manson over here. Last night since it's supposed to be warm this week I figured I could chop some insulation off. Took hair clippers to cut off my beard and the damn things but into my face. Sopped up the blood to find some weird ass mole that wasn't there ever before. Now I gotta go make appointment to get that looked at. Probably removed

message 418: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Oh Travis! Did you finish shaving or have you got patches left? Hope the mole is nothing.

message 419: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Because of the snow, the barn owls haven't been able to hunt. Just seen one out in the day looking for food now the snow has thawed. Amazing. I've never seen one during the day in the wild before.

message 420: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I finished up with the clippers but decided to skip using a razor. You know how faces are. A little pin prick bleeds like a stuck hog.

My wife had a mole removed several years ago. Was a little minor surgery then they send to a lab to test for cancer. What is it they call it malignancy? Something like that

message 421: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments So glad that you found your glasses, Sarah! So lucky!

Glad you've had a warmer day Travis. Look after your mole/cut. Hopefully it's just something that will go away, but if it's randomly appeared get it checked. Our housemate just had a mole removed the other day which luckily was benign, but went a weird colour so they just got rid of it quick. Yay for mid-30s where everything starts doing weird things... /sigh

message 422: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Rusalka, how are things in your area? I saw scary stuff from Auss on last nights news. It was about crocs and snakes being in flood waters. Crikey, when it floods here we worry about our homes getting wet. It seems it is a different level of risk for you guys :-o

message 423: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Feb 05, 2019 05:22AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Yeah Townsville up in Far North Queensland has had over 1.1m of rain from Friday to Monday. It's still raining. That's over a years worth of rain in 4 days. So the river has flooded, understandably, so taken out houses. On Sunday night, their dam reached 250% capacity, and they had to release the water so the dam didn't burst. That released into the river, which flooded more. So I think there are about 3 suburbs underwater now... maybe more. And it's going to keep on raining for another week.

So snakes are awesome swimmers. So you stay out of flood waters, as snakes get surprised and swim to safety. They have some good, big, snakes up in FNQ. And they have freshies AND salties, so crocs everywhere.

But that's all 2 100+kms away. Thanks for checking in. Benefit to being down South where I am, is that we don't have the monsoon (this is the monsoon season that arrived a month late) or the cyclones, and we don't have the crocs. So when we flood down here, you just have to look out for snakes. But that's no different to usual. I went out for a walk at lunchtime yesterday and spent the whole time looking out for Browns or Red-Bellies any way.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Hi all, this is me coming back to life after the flu almost kill me. Feeling better now, but this is the third time I got sick this winter. I think it is enough...

message 425: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Things sound pretty tense with the flooding, Rusalka. I'm glad you're where it's dry.

I'm happy to hear you're feeling better Sandra. Hopefully you've shaken off the flu bugs for once and for all to give your immunity a chance to rebuild itself.

message 426: by Travis (new)

Oh Sandra, sounds like you've had a rotten time of it! You must be run down. Take care of yourself.

Rusalka, good to hear you're OK. i will never understand how you lot talk so calmly about killer snakes and spiders!

Glad you are feeling better, Sandra. The flu seems to have been particularly nasty this winter.

Travis, I hope your mole turns out to be nothing.

Margo | 11628 comments Is it just me or is everyone getting voiced into the GR app view of the site? It is very annoying as I can't find a way to view the most recent comments first and option to change page is right at the bottom of the screen 😡

message 430: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I refuse to check Goodreads on my phone anymore :( It's just too hard.

They were reporting tonight that over 2000 homes have been flooded up in FNQ now. Most are coming home to find the water has receded but 1m of mud is left in the house. Urgh.

A friend of mine lives up there, and is in Cambodia at the moment. Her friends sent a video of her house which she shared on facebook. The flood waters have stopped at her back fence. It's literally water, then the fence, then dry. So bizarre.

Also, when the whole world is trying to kill you, you get pretty blase about the whole thing. Still more likely to be killed by a coconut than a crocodile.

Margo | 11628 comments The site is still normal on my desktop. Must be a kindle thing :(

I've gotta ask - how does a coconut kill you?

message 432: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments The coconut falls on your head. It’s a real issue in Hawaii etc. What a horrible way to die... people would be snickering at your funeral. Lol

message 433: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments Just looked it up. Statistically, 150 people are killed each year by falling coconuts...

That's a lot more deaths by coconuts than I would have expected. I mean seriously, the timing has to be perfect.

Not on my laptop, but it did just happen on my phone. Annoying indeed! With Android, if you go to the 3 dots in the top right corner, you can select 'desktop site' and it goes back to normal.

message 443: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Has anyone heard of the Too Good To Go initiative? I think it's international.

It's an app against food waste. Shops, cafes, bakeries and so on can join and offer 'magic boxes' for only a little bit of money. You can reserve one and pick it up just before closing time, and it contains food that is still completely fine but will be thrown away otherwise.

I think that's great and want to try it out. There are many shops/stores/cafe that have joined this in the two cities I work in, but none at all in my own city! I'm going to check back regularly to see if anything comes up here too.

message 444: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments Peggy, I haven't heard of that but it sounds like a win win. Hope it comes to your city soon.

message 445: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments When we were in Thailand a few years ago, a coconut fell off a tree about 2ms from us, and landed on a plastic chair on someone's front porch. It smashed it to smithereens. I have never seen anything like it. I had heard about the coconut thing, but if Lexx or I had been underneath that tree, we would have been dead, easily. Was terrifying.

Now if we are anywhere near coconut trees, one of us is on coconut watch while being lead by the other.

Cool initiative, Peggy. They have ceased operating in Aus unfortunately. Hope your town gets added soon, but maybe you can pick up a box in the other towns on the way home from work?

Stay warm, Jenn! That sounds ridiculous!!!

message 446: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Peggy, I haven't heard about that initiative, but I like it. I hope it shows up around here and in your home city too.

Rusalka, that is really scary. Glad you were both just far enough away. Yikes. I'll be sure to have a coconut lookout person if I'm ever lucky enough to be near a coconut tree.

Jenn, stay warm. That is way too cold.

message 447: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's scary Rus!

Stay warm Jenn!

I could pick up a box in my work city, but as you can only pick it up in the 15 minutes before closing time, I would have to stay at work 1-4 hours longer than I normally would. I did find a hotel near work that offers it from 10 to 10.15am, so you can come with your own bags, boxes and bottles and for 3 or 4 euros take whatever's left from the breakfast buffet.

message 448: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Not heard of the initiative - sounds good though. I will check it out. There was a skip kitchen in Bristol for a while which kind of implied they got food from the supermarkets out of the skip they throw it in but they may well have had an arrangement with them for all I know. Anyway, they'd cook food with it all and serve it up. It was all very low cost to get a meal in there and every day the menu was different depending on what food they'd got. I thought it was a great idea. It's not there anymore unfortunately.

Never thought to look out for coconuts before so I will do now after your close call Rusalka. Not that I have any plans for tropical holidays at the moment. We're off to Austria this year to stay with our friends which I'm looking forward to though.

It was really windy here last night. The boat was rocking a lotand it was so loud. We were awake for a good few hours because of it. I think we're due more strong winds over the next couple of days.

message 449: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Yes we have that initiative here in the UK Peggy. A lot of places in Bristol and Bath are listed on there but nothing a bit closer to where we are at the moment. It's not clear how veggie friendly it is. Some places mark their box as vegetarian which makes it clear and of course cake places will be but as for the others, I could end up with all meat stuff. It's pretty cheap though. I'm definitely going to give it a go.

message 450: by Margo (new)

Peggy, thank you, that is a bit better. Still no way to "rely", "edit or "delete" a comment though. Don't like the update 👎. On the positive side though, my predictive text has come back. That has been gone for a couple of years now and I have really missed it 👍
