Sarah | 18549 comments Go Sam!!!

I hope Less'x family remain safe and that their homes end up being ok. It really is horrendous.

I have just been offered a last minute cancellation to have an operation for the stomach pain I've been having this year. It's a week today. So pleased that something is going to be done now after all this time. It's really bad timing as I'm due back to work then but I can't turn it down. Here's to a pain free 2020 (hopefully).

I’m half way between Mallacoota and batemans bay, it’s horrendous with these fires.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments A video I saw Janice was a koala climbing up people's bikes outside Adelaide trying to get their water bottles. Insane that they know that they contain water, and give no shits about the people on or next to bikes!!

Thanks guys. Lexx's sister has been evacuated from the beach to... where ever they could go. Which was no where, so they are camping in the town's sports oval (they luckily had tents). Road is cut for at least 4 days and there is no fresh water in the town as the sewage works burnt down.

Lexx's brother and mum are okay. Were prepared for the fire to come through to the house and the wind changed direction. Very very lucky.

However the wind changing direction means Lexx's aunts at the other end of the fire front are now under attack.

We were at a NYE party and it rained for 5 mins. First rain here in months. It was glorious!! Then the wind changed here at 8pm. Within 10 mins, the place was in pea soup thick smoke. We had to leave before 9pm as we couldn't breathe outside, and the inside was also full of smoke due to evaporative cooling. Also, the rain was accompanied by a lot lightning we couldn't see, so there are now multiple fires around us due to the lightning.

Got a call from our old housemate at 9.30pm asking if they could evacuate to our place. They live in an apartment in the middle of the city. If you put a pin on Google maps in the city of Canberra, they would be under it. All the apartment blocks had gone into evacuation mode on their fire systems. The fireys can't deal with them all and once reset, it reverts back to evac mode. So they are asleep on our couch now as we speak.

So. In short. 2019 sucked. I really had a shit of a year and I feel like you guys took a lot more of the venting then you should have. It's lovely to have a space that is so removed from life that you can do that. But I get that I was a bit of a downer this year. And thank you to all of you, commenting or just reading the ramblings of a Aussie woman shouting into the void, for keeping me sane, and making me feel like *someone* was hearing me.

But here's to 2020 in 11 mins. May it be better :D

Nicole! I hope you are okay!!!
What a terrible place to be at the moment! Are you around the Bermagui area? That's where my Sister in Law is, and by my dodgy geography, I would think you are around there or Merimbula way.

Please look after you and yours, and keep us updated in how you're going!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments On that note:

Happy New Year everyone!

May your year be full of happiness, healthiness, good interactions, and apparently good weather, for you and those you love.

You guys are very special to me and I hope I don't scare you all too much with my intensity. But thank you for all being here and sharing your lives and your reads with me.

I do feel incredibly lucky to be in such a community with you all. So sending those good vibes out and hope you all have a great year :D

Lilisa | 2770 comments Stay safe Nicole, all the best on your surgery for next week Sarah, I’m disappointed - not much of a rant there, Rusalka, HNY to all already in 2020 and to those of you counting down the hours like me - quite a few more to go.

message 2465: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments It's only an hour into the new year, Lilisa! Give me time to warm up ;)

message 2466: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Rusalka, seems to me you've had plenty of good reason to rant and vent this year. We certainly don't mind and I love that our group is so interested in what is going on in other's lives and supportive. :) This is the perfect place to spill it. 2020 HAS to be better for you!!

Good luck, Sarah! I hope this finally resolves the issues you've been having.

It's only 9:15 in the morning on NYE here, so you guys are in a whole different decade than I am at the moment! I still have my NYE celebrations ahead of me...which entail me sitting on the couch in my jammies this year. lol

Happy New Year, everyone!!

Welcome to YLTO Nicole. Stay safe from the fires.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sounds lovely Kristie! I saw this comic today of someone's new year plans: 11:59 lying in bed, 00.00 blowing a party whistle, 00:01 fast asleep. Sounds alright to me!

We'll head over to friends tonight. We're going to play board games, but the ones we played in our childhood. We also bought 90s candy, haha! It should be a fun night :) We did the same last year (except with more current board games) and we ended up going home at 4am or something. I hope to be in bed earlier than that tonight though.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Rusalka, rant away. You have every reason to rant. Hopefully, the fires will stop soon and Australia can pick up the pieces. The losses are staggering. I hope you, your friends and family all come out unscathed.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Happy New Year to all!

I am currently at work but will be leaving soon. I just got a call from my granddaughter that the furnace is not working since this morning - like I can fix it from my desk.

I feel terrible for all of you down under. I totally understand the ranting, Rusalka. I hope Lexx's family and Nicole will be okay. Being evacuated is so scary.

Sarah - good luck with your surgery and to being pain free in 2020.

Retro candy - I'm with you there, Roz. Remember wax lips and those little wax bottles with cool aid in them that they sold for a penny? Chick-o-Stix were my favorite.

message 2479: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments Let’s hope rain starts falling down in buckets to stop those bushfires. Sorry you n family are having such a bad time of it down there Rusalka. Please keep us up to date with any news. I think I speak for others when I say that your posts are read, even if I don’t always comment back.
Nicole hope all is well with you too. Here in SE Queensland, we are just thanking our lucky stars it’s not us, because at any time it could be. Think “droughts and flooding rains” Overseas friends, that’s in one of Australia’s loved poems My Country by Dorothea Mackella.
Sarah, hope all goes well with the surgery.
And to everyone all the very best for the new year.

Roz | 4528 comments Mmm, B-B-Bats, candy necklaces (the jewelry you could wear and eat), Dots, wax lips, pixie stix, Sugar Daddies. My sister would get Necco wafers when we went to the movies. I'd get Mackintosh's Toffee (Canadians will know that one). It's a shame they changed the formula.

I used to LOVE Sugar Daddies, among other things. I also loved Swedish Fish (still do) and used to get them for pennies at the corner store where we had to count them out into baggies. I wish they still cost a penny a piece.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I love hearing lolly names from other places. Makes you realise how ridiculous they all are, except yours sound completely normal to you.

Woke up this morning with a full on migraine. Poor evacuees left our house into the smoke (you can see our smoke readings here https://www.health.act.gov.au/about-o...
We're between Civic and Monash. When I woke up our readings were 3000+) to the dulcet tones of Rus throwing her guts up. And I didn't even get the party to go along with that!!

Probably will start showing characteristics in a month. Really will know around 6 weeks - 2 months. They are fully grown by 3 months, but the sexual characteristics take a bit more time to fill out (plumage and comb for the roosters, plumping up and egg laying for the hens).

We keep them inside until they are 3 months old to seperate them from the older hens. But the big chooks have pretty much been living in the house the past couple of weeks, so this has been a bit trickier than usual.
