There was an eclipse? All I can see is smoke anyway, but I had no idea.

Sarah | 18550 comments They are adorable Rusalka! Are they the same kind as your others?

message 2413: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Aw! So cute! Glad they have somewhere to go to get out of the heat and smoke. Looks like they're enjoying story time. :)

message 2414: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Hehe thought you would like them :D

Sarah, they are. They are Australorps (the black) crossed with Rhode Island Reds (the red). So you can see the different expressions already in the colouring! I always find colouring interesting.

These girls are not sexed, so please think henny thoughts our way. They will go back to the farm we got them from to live out their days in a paddock if they are boys as we can't keep them in the city. But I am crossing all my fingers and toes that we got two girls. As they are adorable and I love them.

City girl here. What do you mean they are not sexed? Or is that to naughty to talk about!?!

message 2420: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments They are so cute! Finger crossed they are girls!

message 2421: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Jayme, I am not an expert, chicks need to be certain age before their sex is obvious. Those two are not old enough to know if they are male or female.
Rus, correct me if I'm wrong.

message 2422: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments They must be girls. They’re showing their best camera-angle. :)

message 2423: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Shirley wrote: "They must be girls. They’re showing their best camera-angle. :)"

hahaha, true! They are definitely posing for the camera!

Jayme - I thought the same as Sandra. Rus needs to wait until they are a little older to determine if they are male or female, so as of now they are not sexed, meaning no gender has been applied to them.

message 2424: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4519 comments I love this group. I am continually learning something new!

message 2425: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Haha Shirley. Love it!

No, you can sex chickens if you have the knack/skill. The chicks we usually get are sexed, so you know you are 95% likely getting a hen, usually with a money back guarantee.

Some chicken breeds can be sexed at birth by feathers, but most have to be flipped upside down and looked at down canals to see tiny tiny things is my understanding. Chicken sexers are one of the most highly paid jobs in the world, as they save poultry farms ridiculous amounts of money.

These two have not been, as they are from hobby farmers. But they are delightful.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments And in other news, Victoria (one of our States) has just evacuated an area (EDIT: HALF) the size of Belgium or Maryland (depending on what you are familiar with) due to bushfires down here.

And that's just one state out of the 8 of us. We are really not okay.

EDIT - the news story i read was wrong. It's still a huge area to evacuate though.

Sarah | 18550 comments That's awful. And terrifying.

message 2434: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments And right in the middle of school holidays. That area is popular with holidaymakers. What a disaster.

message 2435: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I know! They've just asked anyone on the Far South Coast of NSW (where Lexx's family is at the moment, some live there, and where the entire city of Canberra holidays) to get out or get to the 4 main towns by 8am tomorrow, as they don't know what's going to happen tomorrow.

These towns live on January money for the entire year! I have no idea what these communities will do.

Although, today the north of Melbourne caught on fire. Last week, Adelaide. So they're right, who knows what will happen.

In unrelated burning news, the house across the road is currently on fire. So that's also fun.

Wait. The house is actually on fire?

message 2441: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Rusalka, this just keeps getting worse and worse. So sad and scary.

message 2442: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments One of the scariest things is the way the fires get so big, they generate their own weather in the form of thunderstorms, which create lightning which lights more fires.

message 2443: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Yeah, 3 fire engines across the road last night. I need to go check it out today. I think it was an electrical fire from what I could work out last night talking to the neighbours and smelling the smoke. Nothing compared to what's happening down the coast.

Lexx's sister and her family are stuck on a beach having evacuated from their brand new coast house, and that's the safest place to be.

Lexx's brother and his family, along with Lexx's mum who's visiting, just started having houses go up in their town where they live.

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Rusalka wrote: "Lexx's sister and her family are stuck on a beach having evacuated from their brand new coast house, and that's the safest place to be..."

I read that they were evacuating people to the beaches. I can't imagine how devastating it is there. I've seen pictures of people giving water to the Koala's. Wild animals so desperate, they'll drink out of a can held by a person.

message 2445: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments I've seen the poor koalas too. They are worried about how many there are left. These fires have been devastating all around.

I hope their new home survives, Rusalka. As awful as it is to be evacuated, it is even worse if there is nothing left to go back to.

message 2446: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I want to say 'how horrible' but that doesn't even cover it. I hope your family will be fine, and like Kristie says, that they'll have a home to get back to.

I just saw on the news about Mallacootta.

Rusalka I really do hope all of your family remain safe. We have been having our share of fires and constant haze/smoke in the air up here in Central Qld but nothing like what is happening down there.
