I am sorry to hear that, Fiona. Are you coming back to your home for the Holidays?

message 2252: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments I will. I will also visit them this weekend and I actually only live about an hour away but I have university and work in the week and more work on the weekend, so I couldn't visit them for a few weeks now and I don't like that.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I wont go see Little Women because I really dislike the director. Greta Gerwig. She wrote and directed Ladybird a movie I hated. When she was just acting she gave an interview complaining about not getting a part. She felt the part went to the directors friend. She felt the person getting the part should not have gotten it because the were not from the chars country.

Years later she casts her good friend Soirche as one of my countries most iconic chars. Jo is based on Louisa Mae Alcott. Ronen is just wrong for the part

Margo | 11628 comments I haven't been checking this page in a while and there is a lot of news ro catch up with!

@Rus - thanks for thinking of us waterlogged Irish/British but I this Auss is having a worse time of it. I remember flooding there with crocs lurking in the water. I know it wasn't close to you but still - CROCS OMG!

@Janice - from your description I don't think we have had freezing rain. Lets face it, compared to Canada we don't even have a winter ;-)

@Peggy - well done! I know I've said this before but you must be really good at you what you do :-)

@Sarah - that terror attack we so scary! We had a woman who went out to join ISIS come back to Ireland this week. It is very worrying. She is being held for questioning at the moment but so far it can't be proven that she did anything illeagal. She was deported from Turkey.

Renee wrote: "I love when you leave the car out in the freezing rain. You open the window and their is an ice window. I know its a bit strange but I really like that"

@Renee - an ice window sounds like something worth seeing! Not sure about the freezing rain though - now that just sounds scary :-0

@Janice - huge adds on the book page are another thing don't get over here. Maybe it's because there are a relatively low no of users here?

@Sarah - you andRobalways do the coolest things! I can believe it gave you backache though *ouch*

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Happy belated Birthday, Fiona. I am sorry to hear you did not have a better day for it. Homesickness can be really bad. I never have really had it but one of my daughters did, after she moved down to California. The first week she was gone, she called me every night, bawling so badly she could hardly talk.

Shirley | 1505 comments Just started a two-week holiday in Tasmania. Rusalka I waved from the plane as we flew over Canberra 😁 Hobart is beautifully cool, welcome after the heat in Queensland. Looking forward to a relaxing dose of Tasmanian tranquility.

Sorry you felt so sad on your birthday, Fiona. Hope you make up for it this weekend. Happy birthday from me :)

message 2268: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Dec 06, 2019 04:38AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Sorry I've been a bit quite this week. Been a really busy week for both Lexx and I at work, and then home life stuff too.

And we've picked a fight with our solicitor. Asked these people to do some work for us. Every step of the way they won't return phone calls or emails, won't copy me into emails, get names wrong, get emails wrong, blame us for the hold up, give incorrect advice (if any advice), get figures wrong, and yesterday they provided us a invoice that missed multiple figures and didn't add up. So a lot of today was taken up by that.

Benefit, and somewhat cause of this week being busy, was it's our week away the coast from Sunday. Except that the place we are staying is on fire. Like, I'm not Rus exaggerating, literally on fire:
description

So we've been trying to organise another place to go that will take 35 of us with a few days notice. Oh. My. God. I found a place (as I had been looking for days) but then it's been a battle with friends trying to lock it in. The place doesn't have a nice pool - it does have a beach on one side, and a lake on the other, and a pool. It doesn't have a bar to serve cocktails in the pool - make your own G&Ts princess!! It's not that hard!

So after people agreed on a place finally at 2.30pm, it took the rest of the day organising people and rooms, requirements and confirming with the cabins. And I had an event I was actually being paid for to run at 4pm for 400ppl which i was trying to set up and prepare for while doing all this. I had dinner at 9.30pm, as I didn't have time until then.

But come this time Sunday I will be on the Far South Coast with the sea crashing around me for a week, and not on fire. Yay!

Jayme | 4519 comments Rusalka, that photo is amazing, but nuts. I know how crazy it can be arranging a place for a group of people, changing it last minute - Yikes! For the last 25 years a group of friends (mostly teachers, but we do have a lawyer and a nurse - both have come in handy over the years) go to the beach the week before teachers report in August. I take care of the arrangements and money. Over the years we have dwindled down the "must haves' criteria because it was getting crazy. Must haves: on the ocean, a pool and 8 bedrooms. anything else is a bonus.
Enjoy your vacation!

Sarah | 18550 comments @Rusalka - crazy photo. And a crazy week for you guys. I feel for you with all of it. A friend of mine is having similar issues with contractors and have lost a lot of money as a result. I hope you get it all sorted. But most importantly for now, I hope you have a fantastic break away.

@Fiona - happy belated birthday.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Thanks guys. Looking forward to a relax. I was up most of the night stressing, and then the cabins started calling me with questions from 9am. I am so ready for a break!

Jayme, you're nicer than me. I figure if there is the sea, who needs a pool? A bed and a beach, that's all you need.

Sarah, very much so. Two friends of mine were in the Winter winning team. See if it's a thing around you!

I posted that photo of the fire to show I wasn't exaggerating, but I think it's worth mentioning how bad it is here at the moment. In NSW alone (the state surrounding me) there are 110+ individual fires at the moment. That's not counting all the fires in QLD where Shirley is, or any of the other States. Around Sydney there are 4 out of control fires that are threatening to combine in the next couple of days to form what the fireys are terming a "Super Mega Fire". The air quality this week due to smoke in Sydney has been worse than Beijing, and got to the 6th worst in the world. They are estimating that in the past few weeks 950 000 hectares of Australia has burnt.

The wind changed tonight and the two closest fires to us, the one on the coast 150kms away and one 100km away, are now blowing smoke over us. Which is so much better than burning, but this is the smoke coming over the city and this is nothing like what Sydney and Newcastle have been experiencing. You can see the actual sky colour up the top right:

description

P.S. that is sunset so it should be getting darker. But it's pretty stark.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Jayme wrote: "@Rusalka stay safe. Will the fires impact where you are staying now on vacation?"

There is one fire within about 75km of where we are staying, but luckily (? weird term for this) the other 100+ are from Canberra latitude and further up. So unless any new ones start (which is likely) we should be good. And as long as the one with the smoke doesn't come east to Canberra while we're away. So many things.

message 2291: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Fires are so scary and upsetting. Between California, Australia and Amazonia, the Earth's been on fire this year. :(

message 2292: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Glad you had a fun birthday bash, Fiona.

Those fires are horrendous, Rusalka. Hopefully you'll be able to salvage your holiday.

message 2293: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments It seems to me that there has never been so many fires burning over such a large area of Australia. Not in my memory, anyhow. At least we now have a much better fire response. The fire burning near my home town Millmerran is still being monitored since it started a week ago. My brothers who still live there are not anywhere near it thankfully.
Rusalka where was that photo taken? I hope you have a relaxing holiday.
Fiona, a belated Happy Birthday. What great friends you have.

message 2294: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments Wow, the fire shots are terrifying, and hit awfully close to home for me. I just saw on my newsfeed that a contingent on Canadian firefighters have just landed. Hopefully everyone stays safe, and the fires get knocked down quickly.

message 2295: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I just finished all the trivia questions . I enjoyed answering them. I am still not sure I will do the challenge. I am very much a mood reader. I like to pick up what I want when I want it. I may just stick to group reads. I am still undecided. I have been housebound all day, I stepped on a glass Christmas ornament. Shoes are painful. I should have been reading but the trivia questions caught my fancy

message 2296: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments Awe, don’t sweat it Renee, but do keep an eye on it as you would be surprised how many things you are reading for other things will also fit the annual tasks 😃

message 2297: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments Ouch, Renee. That must have hurt if wearing shoes is difficult. I hope it heals quickly.

message 2298: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Renée, I hope your foot heals. Such bad luck to step on an ornament!

message 2299: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I think my husband was more upset about the loss of the ornament then my foot. It was one of his favorites. We should have hung it out of the cats reach.

Foots not really that bad just a large flap like cut that the pressure of shoes irritates, Thank you all for the kind wishes
