Kristie | 19138 comments Thanks, ladies. It has not been a good day. I can't wait to get some sleep tonight and start a new day tomorrow. I really hope it gets turned in.

Jenn | 3029 comments Awe, that sucks Kristie. Here’s hoping for some faith in humanity right about now 🤞

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Oh Kristie this week has been so hard on you. I hope someone finds it for you, I also am praying for you. So much stress is so hard on a person.

Lilisa | 2770 comments Oh, what a bummer Kristie :-( I hope it miraculously gets found and finds its way back to you. Stranger things have happened - fingers crossed.

Sarah | 18550 comments Sorry to hear about the ring, Kristie.

message 2156: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4528 comments I haven't visited this thread in quite a while. I'm so sorry to read about our members losing loved ones and others suffering from various illnesses. My sympathies to all of you who have lost family or friends. But how wonderful it is that we have this forum to share our feelings and thoughts with support from each other.
Congratulations to you Peggy! That is truly wonderful news.
I enjoyed reading about the Halloween experiences. We had lots of kids this year. I think part of it was that I left my husband in charge and he would go out the front door, stand on the porch and wave to the kids, calling "come on, come on, I have candy for you". I had to let him know that really wasn't cool.
I hope your ring turns up, Kristie, but don't beat yourself up over it. Crap happens. I remember when my mother-in-law lost a diamond ring she had made from her father's stick pin (remember those things men wore to keep their ties in place?). It was gorgeous. She was so upset because it was a link to him. But then she realized she would always have her memories of him with the stick pin on when he got dressed up. She went out and bought a fake ring that looked just like it.

message 2157: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Thanks, Roz. It really is upsetting as there is sentimental value. I can always buy another wedding band, but it's not quite the same. I do keep in mind that it really is just a material item. No one was hurt, etc.

I got an update from airport security today. They watched me on security footage (so weird!) and saw the cleaners go by about 20 minutes after I left. He said he didn't see anyone in the footage go pick anything up in that area. He went over there and even unbolted the seats to see if it somehow managed to get trapped underneath. He did not find the ring. He also spoke with the cleaner in the footage and they didn't see it either. My best guesses are that it rolled away when I stood up or got kicked or something and either someone picked it up or it's still tucked away wherever it ended up or it got vacuumed up. Either way, I still hope someone finds it and turns it in, but it is unlikely.

It's always the sentimental value that we attach to something like a ring that hurts when it's lost. Things can be replaced, but like you said, it's not the same. I hope it turns up. Strange things happen all the time. Being watched on security is kind of creepy.

That's great that the airport security is doing their best to help you. Like you say, maybe it will still turn up.

message 2160: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments The security part was so funny. While we were on the phone, he was asking me to describe exactly where I was sitting and what I was wearing. Then he said, ok I see you there. You're using a shoulder strap. You're behind this family... I was saying yea, that's me... it was so weird to have him watching me while I was on the phone. lol I didn't even know they would do that.

message 2164: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Well, I voted for a lot of books in this year's Choice Awards... I voted for none. Nada. I have quite a lot of the nominees on my TBR pile or wishlist, but those that I have already read I did not like enough to vote for them. I was hoping to see The Doll Factory and The Binding make the cut, I feel both deserved it, but neither of them got nominated.

message 2165: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I took a look and I haven't read none of the titles nominated...

message 2166: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I had a look at a few categories and read none of them either. Well, actually, there was one book in there that I started and abandoned, so that was definitely not going to get my vote ;-)

I mostly use the award nomination stage to add new books to my TBR, haha!

message 2167: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments I was just going to mention that it is time to start voting here: https://www.goodreads.com/choiceaward...

Voting is going to be difficult for me. There are some categories that I have a few unread on my tbr, even got some from the library but didn't have time to read them. Then a few were I read a couple of books, but didn't necessarily prefer one over the other. The only category I could vote in immediately was Romance, which is funny because I don't generally read romance at all. I happened to read one of the nominees and thought it was great. I had one category that was a write in for me because I was surprised to not see the book I wanted.

I opened up a thread to discuss here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Margo | 11628 comments Aww Kristie that's terrible! Any luck since you last posted?

I sitting her in my liviny with Pete trying our best to munch our way through snacks for 8 people! I was due to host my irl bookclub tonight but one hour before it was due due to start it began to snow heavily and it hasn't stopped since! As this is Ireland and we are never prepared for snow, everyone cancelled 😦

Ah well, can't argue with weather!

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Wow... no posts in this thread for 8 days?!

Sorry to hear it got cancelled Margo! I had no idea Ireland has snow already this time of year.

Sarah | 18550 comments Oh wow, snow in Ireland!? It has been pretty cold here in England this week. Not ready for snow yet.

Kristie | 19138 comments Margo wrote: "Aww Kristie that's terrible! Any luck since you last posted?"

No, Margo. Thank you for asking, but I think it's gone. My guess is that it was either vacuumed up or knocked somewhere and picked up by someone that didn't turn it in.

message 2174: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments We got a snow dusting here in Virginia already too. It's quite cold here right now.

message 2178: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments The snow here had vanished by morning but it's pretty cold.

@Kristie: I'm very sorry to hear that. I can imaginge how you feel as I had a close call with mine about a year ago. Pete couldn't understand why I was getting so upset and kept saying he'd buy me another. He didn't understand that it the memories attached to that one that I'd lost. Thankfully I found mine but I can remember how utterly devastated I felt.

message 2179: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments I feel your pain as well Kristie. Years ago my parents took their rings in to the jeweler to get them touched up, supposed to be like a week turnaround. A month or so later, and continual hounding, the jeweler finally admitted that they had lost them in transit. They spent months of blowing up their mid-seventies wedding pictures trying to get them remade. The jeweler wasn’t impressed, but it was their screw-up so they did it.

message 2180: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments No snow here in Germany yet. But it was really cold the last few days so I guess it won’t be long till the first snow falls, yikes

message 2181: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Oh wow, Jenn. That's awful. Glad the jeweler remade the rings for them.

I think it's going to be a cold and snowy winter this year. I remember reading that somewhere.

message 2184: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I also heard that its' going to be a tough winter. We have now 34F/1C, and it is essentially the first time in 72 hours that we are above freezing. And it is only November!

message 2185: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments We have freezing rain right now and -1C. It's supposed to rain all weekend. Should be fun times. I hope the City plows the road today and gets all those loose, wet snow off of the street or people are going to get stuck. I had a hard time backing out of my driveway onto the street yesterday. It had been packed down, but it started to warm up which loosened the snow.

Poor you! I dread icy roads. Is "freezing rain" what we call sleet or do you have fancier weather in CA? :-D

message 2187: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I told my Mum that my friend in Canada had temps of -1C and sleety rain and she said "Well they're used to it!". Gotta love my Ma ROFL

message 2188: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Margo, freezing rain and sleet are similar, but a little different. Sleet is frozen as it falls and freezing rain freezes when it hits the ground.

Margo | 11628 comments Kristie wrote: "Margo, freezing rain and sleet are similar, but a little different. Sleet is frozen as it falls and freezing rain freezes when it hits the ground."

Ah, not sure if I've experienced that! Probably did and never noticed the difference. It makes sense as the ground is usually colder than the air. Thanks Kristie 😀

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments Freezing rain is horrible. You get a solid covering of ice that dries as hard as cement. You can let the car run for 15 minutes with heat on the windows and still get a workout trying to scrape it off the windows. And no, you don't ever get used to it. It's dangerous, making driving and walking extremely treacherous.

Sleet is rain mixed with snow, forming little ice pellets and doesn't cause the same kind of hazard.

message 2191: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments Yes, freezing rain = ice rink.

message 2192: by Cherie (last edited Nov 15, 2019 04:16PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments We do not get a lot of freezing rain, but we get rain or rain mixed with snow and then the temperature drops below freezing and we get our ice rink called black ice. It looks similar to Janice's car picture, but on the road. If you are driving at dusk or in the dark when the freeze happens, it is awful! One minute you are on the road and the next you are in a ditch or smashed up into a tree or bushes, especially if the road curves.

message 2193: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59889 comments The three things that scare me driving is freezing rain, black ice, and fog (in that order). When it's freezing rain and you're driving, the windshield freezes up faster than the wipers can clear it off, causing an added visibility issue.

message 2194: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Stay safe everyone with that ice. Sounds absolutely horrendous to drive in.

It's going to be a world of extremes I think these next few months. You guys are freezing early, and we had the worst bushfire conditions in NSW ever, with Sydney, the North Coast, and Wollongong area all rated Catastrophic this week on the bushfire condition scale. WA, QLD and NSW has been pretty much on fire for a week. All on top of the fact the country has been in drought for over a year, it's pretty nasty.

Shirley, hope you are okay where you are. I know you have places in SE QLD and the North Coast of NSW, so let us know you are okay when you can!

This week Canberra is going to reach 37C (99F) for 3 days in a row. Although I can't complain, the heats blowing over from WA where it's hitting at the moment and giving them days of 44C (111F). So glad we installed an air conditioner this winter.

We are ok thanks Rusalka. We are In Pottsville for the weekend, and the smoky haze is all around us. The Sun was just shining through and red in colour. So eerie-looking. Our place in Qld is thankfully well away from bushland, but really you can never be sure when some crazy kid will light a fire for fun, and suddenly it’s roaring through suburbia. Some years ago when we lived near Toowoomba, we were evacuated from our place which was on acreage. The bushfire came within one house-block away. Very scary. Were you in Canberra when that huge fire threatened the city? 2003?
The Arsonist A Mind on Fire by Chloe Hooper is a book written about the 2007 Black Saturday fires. It’s a good read.
Talk about extremes in weather - we are off to Tassie next month for a holiday and it was snowing there a few weeks ago. It’ll probably be stinking hot when we get there.

message 2196: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments Our winters usually have temperatures between 2C and -5C so we have to deal with freezing rain a lot. I hope everyone stays safe, if it’s freezing rain or bushfires!

Jayme | 4519 comments This weather is crazy. We have a Nor'easter forming off the coast and they are calling for high winds, rain and tidal flooding. Perfect excuse to stay in my pjs, make chili and read. Stay safe everyone. It seems mother nature is angry.

message 2199: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Listening to you guys makes me realise how luck I am to live in a temperate climate. We get a lot black ice and fog here but the our main danger is from flooding. One third of the county I live in is underwater - rivers and lakes. A big chunk of the rest is bog land. So we get a mist, fog, blank ice and floods.

Stay safe everyone.

So glad you are okay. I have been thinking of you. And that smoke induced red sun is stunningly beautiful and very unsettling.

Yep, 2003 was where we live now and where my family lived at the time. A bunch of 8 suburbs were massively hit that day - born in one, I grew up in one, Mum lived in another, Dad in another, and us now in yet in another. I was away at the coast when it happened and rushed home. I drove a friend's car through back roads around police blockades (so stupid) to get home to help Mum and Dad (in different suburbs, both on fire) and drove along the road we are just living off now which was a wall of flame. I had to drive along it with this inferno on one side at 20km/hr as everyone was running across the road with garden hoses (which didn't work) and buckets, trying to stop the flames from jumping across that 10m road to the houses. For some reason, it didn't...

Wouldn't wish that on anyone.

You talk to Lexx though, who lived 3 suburbs away and he has a completely different idea of the day. He recalls a day with awesome sun, completely dark at 2pm, and the best day for photography in his life. What a difference 5km makes to your perspective!
