Sounds wonderful Peggy! Hope you had a wonderful trip.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks everyone! Breakfast was delicious, as expected. We spent Sunday exploring a nearby old city (more like a town) and its surroundings, and on the way home Monday stopped in another cute town. We were so lucky with the weather! It was raining until Friday and it's raining now, but during the 3 days we were away it was sunny and 22C! We even had lunch outside on Sunday and Monday.

Why is it that food, eaten outside in the sunshine taste soooo good? Glad you had a great time Peggy ;-)

Yep, fresh air adds flavour to everything!

LOL I love her priorities! They so should have come along. "All on black!" "No, Rus. On the table, not the chicken"

And I will happily show you guys the Opera House if you want to come visit. One of the people who lived in our flat is a chorus member at Opera Australia too who sometimes perform in there.

Oh dear - so I am not in the hubby's good books....

We do a lot of batch cooking and put the meals into old takeaway containers. Now, I am normally pretty good at labeling up what is being put in the containers but epic failure tonight!

We thought we were going to have a spicy Nacho Feast, (that is what the container said), and rice was made to go with it. Problem is, it isn't Nacho Feast, it is Bolognese, which my hubby is not a fan of - oopps, ( it is my favorite though lol). Never had it with rice but there's a first time for everything!

message 1962: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Kathryn! I rarely label stuff that I put in the freezer (ours is not very big) but there have been times where I had to defrost the food to know whether I should make rice or pasta ;-)

message 1963: by [deleted user] (new)

We never used to label the containers but I got a bit fed up thinking I was coming home to a chicken curry and ending up with a beef stew! We have a chest freezer in the garage which has been a real time saver for us. We both work longish hours so rarely cook anything from scratch during the week. We have saved money in the long run as we are less likely to cave and buy a takeaway.

message 1964: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We usually cook for 2 (more like 3, but my partner tends to eat for 2..), but if we made more and there are leftovers I put them in the freezer (or, depending on what it is, one of us takes it to work the next day). I have to eat by myself once a week so that's perfect to get rid of the left-overs. When I have to cook for myself on one of those days I usually make 3-4 portions so that I have something for the following weeks as well. And especially in autumn/winter I often have home made soups in the freezer.

message 1965: by [deleted user] (new)

I am definitely looking forward to making some soups now that the fall weather is finally upon us.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments I declared soup season open last Wednesday with a yummy carrot soup. :)

message 1967: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I made zucchini soup and pumpkin soup so far. I just love soup!!

message 1968: by Fiona (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments My first soup this season was a coconut curry soup two weeks ago :)

message 1969: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I've got a ham bone (with lots of ham) in the soup pot on the stove. I'm thinking either a ham and corn chowder or a lentil/pea/barley and ham soup. I could do both, I suppose.

I find it difficult to cook for myself. If I do make a casserole, I end up eating it for several days until it's gone. I've tried portioning it out and putting it in the freezer. But, the next day, I raid the freezer.

message 1970: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19142 comments I made minestrone recently and I plan to make a new pumpkin soup recipe soon. I’ve already bought all the ingredients. I’ve never made pumpkin soup, but the recipe looked really good.

message 1971: by Renee (last edited Oct 20, 2019 01:52PM) (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Oh Kathryn I have had that same problem many times. LOL I am so bad at labeling what I freeze. I usually guess what in the container. As to Bolognaise with rice I actually make a casserole with rice and leftover sauce it is one of my husbands favorites.

message 1972: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I bought this box with all the ingredients you need for pumpkin soup. It said it would take 35 minutes to make... It took me almost 35 minutes just to chop everything up!! If you count the cooking times in the instructions it added up to 30 minutes, which would leave you 5 minutes to chop up a pumpkin, 2 carrots, 3 cloves of garlic, 3 shallots, an apple, some herbs, and squeeze an orange. I know I'm not very fast with a knife, but who could manage that?!

message 1973: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19142 comments Sounds like the prep time wasn’t very accurate for your recipe, Peggy. Maybe they didn’t count prep time at all.

message 1974: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Controversial opinion: I hate soup.

I also don't label things in the freezer, and sent Lexx the other day with Char Kway Teow to work, and you should have seen the email I got oozing disappointment that it was Chicken and Jollof rice.

I still reckon it's better than the day he took a container of stock to work. So he should be feeling fortunate.

In an very salty, unappertising way lol

message 1977: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Talking about soup...made Moroccan chickpea soup. I add kielbasa to it and serve it over rice - makes a nice meal.

message 1978: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh Rusalka! Stock?? Now that would have gone down like a ton of bricks if I did that to David. He would go nuts lol.

Prep time for making anything from scratch can be very time consuming. I invested in a small electric blade which I now use for my carrots, peppers, onions, celery - well pretty much anything I can't be bothered to slice or chop. It works really well for sauces and soups.

All this talk of soup is making me hungry - I quite fancy leek and potato.

message 1979: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1505 comments Gourmet cooks, you! My idea of soup-making is buying the (gourmet) ready-made soup (not canned or packet, though) from our local supermarket. The laksa is beautiful. The chicken noodle, too, but with added chicken. My husband makes divine pea and ham soup. Can’t think of soup now though in our weather downunder. It’s Salad Time!

message 1980: by [deleted user] (new)

We get some really nice soups from the supermarket too Shirley. I'm not very adventurous in the kitchen so if we want a really nice Thai soup etc., we buy the fresh ready-made.

I am super excited - for Christmas this year one of my besties and I are going to see The Nutcracker at the Royal Albert Hall on 30th December rather than buying each other a gift. Here is the link,

Looks amazing!

I'm sure 'The Nutcracker' will be amazing, Kathryn. Have you ever been to the Royal Albert Hall before? It's lovely!

message 1984: by [deleted user] (new)

I have never been to the Royal Albert Hall nor have I seen a ballet live. London will also be very festive as it is only a few days after Christmas.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I do like the Nutcracker. But it is the only Ballet I have ever attended. It is on my bucket list to see another Ballet. I love them but unfortunatlyt my family and friends are not interested. So I will just have to keep watching the ones they stream at the cinema

message 1987: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I love soup and generally have it for my lunch when at home. I don't use recipes but use it as an excuse to use up leftover vegetables . I have a habit of always making spicy soup. I might try some recipes now and maybe freeze a couple portions. Rob doesn't like soup so I only get to eat it when I'm home alone. Haha.

It was Rob's birthday at the weekend and it's mine today. I'm 40! We went to Longleat Safari park on Saturday which was excellent. Sunday roast with the family. Spa day on Monday with my cousin which was so needed. Had my first tattoo done yesterday. So I'm having a good birthday week so far. I'm actually on a course today but it's a light hearted one and should be good fun. No idea what I'm doing this evening yet. Depends on the pussy cat. We had to take him to the emergency vet the other night as he hasn't been eating and had some abdominal pain. Must be something about the boat. Haha.
