Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I'm back from my visit with my sister. I had a great time with her. We watched old TV shows, assembled some puzzles, and went to a Rock and Gem show in Ashland with a friend of hers. She is walking ok (hobbling, she calls it) and using her cane when she is away from home. Her knee and the top of her leg are still numb from her hip replacement surgery in May. She continues to go to physical therapy and exercises as much as she can to keep the muscles working. I listened to Wally Roux, Quantum Mechanic and European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman during my drive to her house and back. Wally Roux was short and funny. I love the story and voices of the Monstrous Gentlewomen. I am half-way through listening to it. I finally managed to teach my sister how to get onto Facebook on her Amazon Fire tablet and post a message. Her internet service is so slow, I could not open most of my apps on my iPod.

Great to hear from you, Annerlee.

There's no internet connection where I'm staying, but I've decded to use my mobile phone as a hot spot, so I can get online much easier now. Should have thought of it sooner. Hmm.

Sarah | 18550 comments My abdominal pain has reduced quite a lot this week which I'm very thankful for. Seen a doctor and got a referral for a specialist, although it will take 8 weeks which is a little annoying. I have a fibroid which is the most likely culprit, although endometriosis is still on the table.

I've been interviewing the speakers that will be presenting at a convention that I'm helping to organise later this year. Never done anything like it before so it was a new experience. Just finished my second one today. I think they've gone quite well. They have now been splashed all over social media which is a little bit scary. I have 7 more to go I think over the next few weeks.

message 1759: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments It is very annoying to have to wait for treatment. Members of my family suffer from endo so I have idea how hard that is to live with. I hope they're able to releave the pain for you Sarah.

message 1760: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments It's 8 weeks to see the specialist but I'm guessing that if I have to have any other treatment, I'll have to wait for that too.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've decided to sign up for yoga class. Just 3 lessons to begin with, to see how I like it. I found a yoga class very close to my home (2 minutes by bike, or a little more if I walk), which is good, as I know myself and know that if I have to cycle for 15 minutes to get there, I won't go, especially not in winter or when it rains or when I can think of another excuse ;-) There's actually a class/school that I like better based on the website, but that one's further away.

I did a bit of yoga on my own a year ago (online classes), but after 2 months or so I stopped. I did like it though! I'm going to try yin yoga. My body often feels so stiff and I have these little pains in shoulder, back and neck, and if I stretch for a longer time in certain positions that feels so good! So I'm thinking yin yoga might be a good fit. The other reason is that since work started again my mind is racing all the time with mostly work-related thoughts, even in evenings and in the weekend. It's driving my crazy! And tired! It also affects my body as I always feel so alert and can never really relax. So I hope the yoga will help a bit with that too.

message 1766: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments Yin yoga is my favourite.

message 1767: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I get so much out of yoga when I actually do it. A class is a good plan Peggy .I occasionally do stuff at home but not regularly enough . I will be good for your body and mind I'm sure.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I am inside at our newly remodeled McDonalds. I am waiting for my order. This is the first time I have been inside and had to order via the self-service kiosk. They have converted to this method at my work place too. I don’t like it. One more way to reduce people, job opportunities, dehumanize our existence, and make more money for big business.

message 1772: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I stopped using McDonald's here when I was 16. I kinda forgot they existed ,they are so off my radar now .

message 1773: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments My first job was at McDonalds. We took all orders with a pencil. The cash register did not tell us how much change to give. We actually had to figure it out ourselves.LOL

message 1774: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol, times change Renee!

I think those self service kiosks have been around here for some years already. Have never used one though, it's been ages since I was at a McDonalds.

message 1775: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I was in a McDonald's in France 2 years ago with my son and that was self service. I was very impressed by their chicken goujons. I haven't been back since though. I don't really eat chicken anymore either. In fact I eat very little meat these days. See what one trip to McDonald's can do to a person?! LOL

Shirley | 1505 comments Oh Lordy Lordy!! Am I in a pickle. I have 10 books checked out of the Library (plus 1 ebook) AND 20 books on hold - 6 of which are ready to pick up. So tomorrow, I'm going up to the Library, and putting back the 2 I have read, (plus maybe 1 more that I can do without reading right now), checking out the 6 I have on hold. That's better. Then I'll have only 14 on hold, allowing me to put 6 more on hold.
Luckily I'm on holidays for a few weeks to read, read, read.

Good luck Shirley! I've been having to send a few books back unread lately. I was just saying in the library thread that 3 of my books just came in at the same time. That is a lot for me. lol

Sarah | 18550 comments Wow, you have some juggling to do there Shirley! I was always overly optimistic when I used the library, returning half of what I borrowed.

message 1780: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Sep 22, 2019 04:22AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Sorry all. Been a bit AWOL.

A lot of it is that a friend of mine let me know her hive was about to swarm, if I wanted to get my beehive set up. Which I do but my hive was mostly in parts on my couch since December (yes, Lexx hates me). So I have spent the last 10 days in boot camp DIY. The hive is constructed, painted, stained and done. The frames got built yesterday, and today Lexx cleared the patch and I spent the afternoon shoveling, sifting and moving stones for the beehive area. I still need to wax the frames, then put the hive in situ (which I'll show you when I get there) but this was the hive last weekend. I am a little chuffed:

I have so many blisters and cuts and I hurt. But I should be good now if her hive swarms!

Oh and Lexx's Dad turned up on our doorstep last Friday and stayed for a week. Without warning. You know, just for funsies. He lives outside Hobart in Tasmania, and appeared in Canberra. That's New York to Atlanta, or Edmonton to Seattle, or Amsterdam to Budapest. Just turned up and then camped on our front yard in his Kombi van. Lucky he's lovely, but didn't need that last week lol

I also bought a giant compost bin that needs to be built when I was in the hardware shop (Bunnings, for Aussies) for 2 hours trying to troubleshoot what to place the hive on. Lexx is away next weekend at a Blacksmithing course, so I will hopefully build that next week, and get some reading done.

Spring has sprung properly over here, obviously! Hope everyone's well!!

message 1781: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Wow, sounds like you pair are going back nature in a big way. How exciting!!! Can't wait to see the completed pics. Are you going to collect the honey and wax or are you more into the pollination side? I listened to a podcast recently about bee keeping for pollination, it was really interesting.

Re: Unexpected visitors - don't you just love them LOL

Good to have you back Rus!

message 1782: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments Wow, Rusalka! You've been busy! The hive looks great!

message 1783: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Definitely for honey, we are hoping it helps with our terrible hay fever. They think that eating local honey made from local pollen helps with the reactions in your body.

But really, I want to help the bees. I saw my second bee for spring today in 4 weeks. That's odd. And last year my zucchinis (courgettes) didn't fruit as they didn't pollenate. Bees die, we die. It's pretty simple. We have room for a hive so let's have a hive (Lexx is allergic to bees though. Oops).

My compost bin is currently full of rats, so I am fixing a problem with a $250 contained one, instead of a $20 dodgy one... That's going to be a fun time when I open the current one...

Urgh to unexpected visitors. Lol!

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Rusalka wrote: "They think that eating local honey made from local pollen helps with the reactions in your body."

I heard the same thing, and it makes sense. I hope it works. The beehive looks wonderful! It is obvious you worked so hard! I am planning on growing a bee friendly garden next spring. I had been trying those seeds mix, but most of the time they don't bloom. Scam, maybe. Whatever. I saw my library is bringing Planting for Honeybees: The Grower's Guide to Creating a Buzz soon and I am already in the waiting list. I will try to do it more seriously this time.

Also, nothing to do with this but somehow related, we have only a few squirrels this year. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this. We used to have lots, and specially crazy at this time of the year, but I can't say I have seen more than 20 maybe. It scares me.

message 1785: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Also unrelated, but did I ever told you that we call our family (meaning husband, kids and me) "The Beehive"? It is how our groups in Whatsapp, Snapchat, etc. are called. :)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Sandra wrote: " I had been trying those seeds mix, but most of the time they don't bloom. Scam, maybe. "

Me too! But I just let kale and broccoli go to flower, and that worked heaps better than the seeds. But I blame the chickens.

message 1787: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I can testify to the benefit of local honey. I think most of you know I suffer from an autoimmune disorder. A friend started bringing me honey from a local farm. I did notice a decrease in some of my symptoms. It helps that I love honey in my tea. It makes the medicine so easy to take.

I have a decreased squirrel population in my yard. It is no mystery. My neighbor has a new dog. This dog love to chase squirrels. So my squirrels have move out.

message 1788: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59893 comments I really like your beehive, Rusalka. I'm going to show the picture to my friend who is a beekeeper. She's really into the sugar skulls so she took her woodburning tools and etched one into her hive.

I don't envy you dealing with the rats in your composter. Do you have a plan of attack?

message 1789: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Love the beehive Rusalka .you've got skills! I bet you're pleased it's done after all this time . Sorting your compost out sounds an ordeal. Good luck with that one.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Yesterday we went to a Bilbo Baggin's Birthday Party that is organized every year by a family we know from school and church. We had a scavenger hunt, archery contest, a piñata, many backyard games, potluck dinner, birthday cake, and we ended with a bonfire after sunset. Many families from school and church attended, I think we were around 50 or 60 in total, 2/3 kids, I would say. It was wonderful!

and Sarah, this looks like you had a fun day.

I went to "pick-your-own" farm to get squashes. You could get a wheelbarrow full of them. Half of one is mine...
