Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I tried your word game last night, Janice, except when I tried to think of an a word, all that came to mind was Aloysius (I didn't know how to spell it and had to look it up). So, I thought - okay, I will use names. I got to Aloysius, Barbara, Constance - and decided to listen to my Pendergast audiobook. I set the timer for 15 minutes and was asleep before it went off. I woke up 4:30am though and listened for about an hour before I fell asleep again. I woke up when my alarm went off and the book still playing. Now, I have to figure out where I was when I was still conscious last.

Sarah | 18549 comments I teach the word and counting techniques to my clients. Also focusing on your senses - what you can see (even though it's dark and your eyes are closed), what you can hear, what you can taste, touch and smell. The latter two are hardest. Also imagine the chatter in your mind is a soundtrack or if images are present make it a movie (vety topical) and imagine slowing it down.

Rob says thanks Rusalka. Hope Lexx was ok.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments The trick is finding a technique that works for you. My dad will not try to go back to sleep. He'll just read until he's tired. He also has a nap in the afternoon, or what he calls a nap. He falls asleep sitting at the table doing a Sudoku puzzle, or in front of his computer. It doesn't look all that comfy, but it works for him.

Sarah | 18549 comments The canal is frozen again today - definitely the firmest it's been. I'm tucked up inside with the wood burner though so I'm all warm. I got up late though and have done some admin but really I need to be doing some writing too but I don't feel in the mood for it for some reason. I have some chores to do so I might do those and then see how I feel after that.

message 105: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments It must be a lot colder in the UK than here! I wonder if ireland is the warmest part of europe right now - that would make a change lol

message 106: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I think we must be in a little cold pocket where we are, perhaps a bit more exposed too. The last few times we've been predicted temperatures around freezing or just below, it's actually been much colder (or at least according to our van thermometer) than forecast. The ground is whiter and harder but just up the road it seems less so and a few degrees warmer.

message 107: by Fiona (last edited Jan 10, 2019 06:40AM) (new)

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments Can anyone cheer me up please? I have such a bad headache and when I think of the next two days I could cry. Tomorrow, I have to go to uni and after that I'm going to work for 7 hours. Everything fine, right? Not really. I have to work till 8 pm and on Saturday I have to work from 5:30 am, which technically is illegal because you have to rest for 11 hours between your work shifts. But who cares right? I know it's not the end of the world but it bothers me so much right now..

I read that way too fast and read that you were tucked up inside the wood burner. 😳 I had to go back and reread. Time for more coffee.

At least you're not tucked up inside a wood burner like Sarah! ;)

I hope you get some rest today and get rid of your headache. You'll feel better about the situation then. I would tell my daughter - Try to enjoy today while you can and don't focus on the next two days or you'll waste the good time you have left and end up with 3 bad days. Hope it turns out well and you have good days, Fiona.

message 110: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments Aww Fiona, that's a rough couple of days. I think you should plan something special for yourself when it's over to give you something to look forward to. Some time with a book you've been wanting to read, an outing with friends, a bowl of ice cream, a bubble bath, whatever. Just plan it now so that you can think of it when your tired and stressed over the next few days. Maybe knowing you have something good coming will boost your spirits.

You sound a bit overwhelmed, Fiona. Try not to think of the next few days and take a bit of time to just relax. Do you know any meditations? If not, put on some music you love, have a glass of wine, and chat with a friend - or with us. :)

message 113: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Ah, sorry to hear you feel so overwhelmed Fiona. Take it easy today, read a book, watch tv, drink some tea, whatever you need to do to calm down a bit, enjoy yourself, and ease the headache. Then, after a night's sleep, you'll feel better tomorrow :)

message 114: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments This year has been very frustrating. I have been doing battle with my medical insurance. The woman who managed my case retired. So someone new is looking after me.

You would think they would read their predecessors notes. This no brain sent me a letter saying that their were other options for pretty much all my meds. My meds are expensive Over the years I have used about everything. I have spent hours on the phone. My doctors have spent hours on the phone.

Two days ago my husband hired a lawyer. The lawyer looked at all the copies we had sent over the past year. He made 2 phone calls and my drugs are covered again. I hope that idiot gets fired.

I made the customer service rep who called me listen to the recorded phone conversations. I particularly wanted her to hear the one where I told the agent I stopped breathing when taking one of the drugs. His reply well sensitivity to side effect is not a reason to not take a drug. I then asked him do you realize if I cant breath I will die. I hope he gets fired

message 115: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Wow...you’d think that not breathing is a side effect you’d want to avoid and a good reason not to take a med! I hope he gets fired too. I’m glad you were able to get it sorted quickly.

message 116: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Renee, such an idiot you have to deal with... I am speechless.

Fiona (fiiicoooo) | 270 comments Oh my, Renee, that sounds horrible! I hope they fire him asap!

message 118: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Wow Renee, that's just insane!

message 119: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments That really is outrageous Renee. No wonder you were frustrated. I'm glad you've got things sorted and hopefully they'll stay that way. And that you'll be allocated someone who cares.

message 120: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments What a mess, Renee! I hope that guy gets fired too, he deserves to.

message 121: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments Oh my! Some people really need to stop and think before they speak. I'm so sorry that happened to you, Renee. I wonder if the customer service rep looks back on it and understands how ridiculously stupid his comments were. I hope so.

I'm glad you've got it straightened out but sorry for the trouble you had to go through to get it done. What a nightmare!

message 122: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Goodness! People seem to be lacking in common sense these days. I'm glad your lawyer sorted him out in short order.

Common sense has left the building, it seems.

message 124: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Totally. I think all it is needed is common sense and good will. The world would be such a better place just with these two things.

message 125: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments OMG Renee, what a horrible excuse for a human being that insurance rep is! I hope he won't be around long enough to unset more ill people .

@Fiona - uni is tough enough without being forced into working horrendous hours. All the advise offered is good. Be kind to yourself - and stay away from wood burners lol

message 126: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I woke up this morning at 5.45 with a blocked nose, sore throat and headache. Took a painkiller and slept until 7 instead of 6.30, then went to work. The nose got worse but no more headache or sore throat. Headache is coming back now though, and nose is still running like crazy and I feel meh. I hope it will be better tomorrow after a good night sleep. Tomorrow afternoon I have a meeting at the new job about the terms and conditions, and I don't want to sit there sniffing and feeling slow and sick.

message 127: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Sound nasty, Peggy. I hope you feel better tomorrow for the interview. Can you spend the morning in bed? That would give you a few more hours of rest, getting ready for the afternoon meeting.

message 128: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's a good idea. I have to work, but from home, so if I feel really bad I'll just stay in bed a bit longer.

message 133: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jan 11, 2019 12:57AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Oh wow Renee, that is completely appalling. I am glad they are sorting it out for you, but my god.

Not in the same league, but reminds me of when we had to rush over to the UK in 2013 as my brother was dying, we were trying to fly to Sydney the night before the Federal election. The QANTAS woman said to me on the phone after I explained the situation to her, and that we needed 3 tickets and was there any emergency seating they may have, "Well, you're brother hasn't chosen a very convenient time for this, has he?"

I responded with something like I wasn't entirely sure he had factored the Australian electoral cycle into his death plan, but I would have strong words to him on her behalf I got there in time. She grunted approval, completely missing the sarcasm.

There weren't any seats, and we caught a bus.

So Renee, it's not just you. People are dicks and have no understanding they are dealing with real people and real, actual problems. We are just things getting in their way and making their day difficult. Idiots.

Hope you feel better Peggy, and your meeting goes well.

message 134: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I can't imagine someone saying something inconsiderate like that Rus! I hope the conversation was recorded (they sometimes do that, right, for feedback purposes) and she was spoken to by her supervisor about that.

I was just saying to Lexx recounting that, if I didn't have to leave the country in 2 days, with my younger brother having to get an emergency passport, and handing over a major conference at work, and you know, having a family member that sick, I would have got her name and called customer service and given them all the details.

But was a little distracted. So I hope the recording that "this conversation will be recorded for training purposes" was true in this instance and she got disciplined.

I just don't understand how people like her and Renee's jerk actually get customer service jobs.

message 137: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments What a stupid woman Rus! Of course you weren't going to follow up on it in those circumstances and she surely knew that!

Changing the subject, how is your face healing?

message 138: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Lol not to *that* topic! It's completely healed thank you :D. It's still a bit tender in one or two spots, but nothing on the outside.

I confessed to my colleague today, and was overheard by my boss, who both thought it was hilarious. Although both said that they had no idea as I had healed really well. I love my state baseball coaching boss who patted me on the shoulder and said "Congrats on your first black eye" as he walked away.

I saw my brother yesterday too who said all his friends where asking how I was and if I was okay. He said "I'm sure she was seedy, but what are you talking about?" They told him I fell over, and his response was "Yeah, she does that." My uncoordination is legendary.

message 139: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Pleased you're all healed Rusalka! Hope you feel better soon Peggy and that your meeting goes well today.

message 140: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments LOL Brothers can let you down with a bang!

@peggy - it sounds like it could be a dose of flu! Although i have a similar reaction to fog. I hope you feel better and manage to get through your meeting tomorrow but i'm sure it would be acceptable to postpone - everyone gets sick sometimes.

message 141: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yeah, I think it's just a cold, not flu. Still annoying though. I feel the same as yesterday but I'm going to the meeting. I also have a high tea tomorrow with my sister and cousin, not sure yet if I'll go.

Other news, especially for chocolate-loving members in the UK: as of today my favourite brand of chocolate is for sale in the UK too! https://www.facebook.com/TonysChocolo...

Ever since they started up and I tried their chocolate, it's my favourite. I like the regular milk one, but they have lots of other flavours too, and a couple of limited editions each year which I of course always try. The best part is that their chocolate is fair and slave-free. I believe it's for sale at Selfridges, but also some other stores soon. You should try it! Really!! All of them!!!

And I have 5 of them! To be fair, he was completely correct. We joke frequently that he got all the coordination genes from both my relatively sporty parents. I have wonky eyes that doesn't help, and I am super good at falling (except when one's face gets in the way). Otherwise, not known for my grace.

In fact, my yr 8 PE teacher told me I had as much grace as an elephant. Which was impressive for a girl who was struggling to hit 38 kilos.

He told me that last year on Christmas he had to take his wife to hospital as she tried to open a bottle on the table, the glass broke on the bottle, and she slit her hand open. Yay for stitches!

I was thinking as we were having the conversation "thank god we're in Australia" as everyone has a summer drinking holiday injury story. I am not sure that conversation with the boss would go down the same in other countries.

message 150: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments It would not be a problem here in the UK Rusalka. We have all year round drinking injury stories. Brits love a drink. A friend of mine worked A&E on NYE and apparently there were record number of faceplants as a result of alcohol. Not to mention the fights, falling off things etc.

The chocolate sounds good although I'm not travelling all the way to Selfridges just to try it. I think there are only a couple of stores in the whole of the UK and nonw near me. Hopefully they'll roll it out further. Talking of new products in the UK. Greggs (the chain bakery store) have just started selling vegan sausage rolls. You would not believe the hooha that has resulted because of it. I don't get it. Sure it's not technically a sausage roll as it doesn't have any sausage in it but still. It's not like they've stopped selling meat versions in favour of the vegan ones. Anyway, it's made the news and everything. Ridiculous!
