Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Margo, about to bombard you with options.

Can you find Lucas Paw Paw Ointment anywhere? https://lucaspapaw.com.au/ I've done a bit of a google and found an article from 2006 discussing which places deliver to Ireland. I found it on Amazon UK though. It's my go to with eczema. It's stickier than I would like everywhere day to day, but desperate times call for desperate measures. I try and use the lotions below for my whole body and then smother problem areas with Paw Paw. It does soak in quicker than expected though.

And the benefit is that I use it as a lip balm (like most Australians), and it heals all kinds of sores. I've been using it on a burn on my hand from the fireplace this week, it helps with the itchiness that scabs get while healing.

I've also used Cetaphil, the intensive stuff https://www.cetaphil.com.au/product/i... I have in my desk drawer when my skin goes flares at work, but Lexx and I use the normal stuff every day to keep flare ups down.

I have bottles of Dermaveen Ezcema Lotion around everywhere at home for when my skin my flares go nuclear. https://dermaveen.com.au/derma_produc...

Lastly, Lemon Myrtle oil or lotion works wonders. If you can find it. Australian native ingredient that's mildly antiseptic and smells yum. And Macadamia oil. From the cooking aisle in the supermarket, used like baby oil. When I had eczema on 60% of my body, it was these two that cleared it up. Just harder to find and/or more expensive so not my day to day go tos.

Good luck!! It sucks. I figure you may as well look into everything before your appointment.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Oh Esther! Sounds very, as you say, chaotic. I hope things are settling down and you are at least decking out the place how you would like it now. Will insurance help cover some of the stuff? Your floating floor comment made me giggle though. And I agree, enjoy the summer time! For me if not for you, it was cold, windy, grey, and drizzly today.

Sarah | 18550 comments It's cold, windy, grey and drizzly here too Rusalka. And it's supposed to be Summer! I've had to light my fire practically every day this week. It's ridiculous. No wonder I have a cold!

Wasn't able to get internet most of the day. Probably these damn storms.

Thank you so much Rusalka! I have orders Lucas Paw Paw Ointment, Cetaphil and Lemon Myrtle oil from amazon. It says delivery by Tuesday. I have always been told if you need skincare advise, ask an Aussie!

Poor you having over 60% of your body. That must have been hell! I am near gone mad with it just on my soles and palms. I can't image what you must have gone through.

I will let you know how I get on.

Hope it helps! With the oil, if it's too intense (including in smell) maybe mix it through a lotion to help carry it.

And seriously, take my skin care advice with a bucket of salt. I spend half the year in eczema overload, and the other half of the year in full on break out mode. I just have found things that make me stop itching in the itching season.

The best thing I ever found for my eczema and my reactive oily skin, was the natural hot spring baths in Baden Baden. My skin was the best it had ever been for about two months afterwards. But that's a less accessible option.

message 1315: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments So I've just about had it with the lovely workers hired for construction and other projects by my town. There's this major roadwork thing going on on my street. They're widening sidewalks to make a bike path and changing parking that has been the same for 50 year or more and putting in new annoyingly bright streetlights and all kinds of stuff. I'm not a fan of the project to begin with. Then, last week when they were ripping out the main sidewalk in preparation for replacing it, they also destroyed part of the sidewalk that runs up to my house. We called to find out what they were going to do about it, and they finally called back to say that they would fix the part the messed up, but nothing more. So now we're going to have half a sidewalk that shows the wear of the past ten years since it was put in and half that looks brand new. Yep, it will be a masterpiece.

Then, this week, in a completely unrelated project, they were unclogging sewer lines, and they evidently blew a whole bunch of air through the lines. This in turn, totally exploded my toilet. The water in the toilet flew clear out and up to the ceiling. It was all over the walls and the floor, and it had little flecks of toilet paper and I don't even want to think what else in it. Disgusting!!! Luckily, nothing was really damaged, but the clean-up was horrible.

So yeah, my hometown and I are not currently friends. Ugg!

A while back we put about 8 colourful nesting boxes for birds up in our garden to make it a bit more colourful. Two birds actually started to make a nest in one of them, and a few weeks ago there were eggs. And now there are 4 baby birds in there!! Haha, I'm so excited! I hope I'm at home when they get their flying lessons :D

At least we didn't exploding loos to contend with though!

I'm just back from a trip to the emergency room with my son. He hit his little toe off of a chair leg last night and broke it - his toe that is, not the chair :-)

He has to get plenty of rest with his foot elevated for 4-5 weeks. We are now a house of invalids! My mum has advanced Parkinsons, my son with be out of action with his toe and than there's me with my gammy arm and leg AND psoriasis on both palms and soles - YIKES!! How lovely, Peggy! We have a nest box on the back of our house and have had blue tits nesting in it for the past few years. This year's babies fledged just under a month ago so it's all quiet in there now. They hung around in our garden for a while though so we were able to see them. The last time I saw them was a couple of weeks ago, they were sitting in a tree and the parents were still bringing them food. There were 7 chicks altogether so pretty successful :)

We also have a trail camera set up in our garden to see what wildlife visits us. So far we have had foxes and badgers as well as lots of different birds and the occasional squirrel, who spends most of his time trying to get to the food in our bird feeders.

Oh, I hope we will see ours like that too! We have great tits in our nesting box. I read that for 2 or 3 days the baby will live on the ground when they're too big for the box but are still learning to fly. Sometimes there's a cat strolling around our garden though, so I'm a bit worried :/

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments @ Tricia - yuck!
@ Margo - your son will be laid up for 4-5 weeks with a little toe??? Wow! I can see 4-5 days, but not weeks. Most of the time all they do is set them and tape the little toe to the next one and tell you to take an over the counter pain reliver for the pain. My daughter did the same thing when she was in high school (the chair thing, I mean). We went to emergency because it was totally at a right angle. The doctor came in and said he could set it with or wirhout a shot, and my daughter said without. He set it, and looked around the little room we were in, and then told me to "hold it" - he did not have any tape with him. We still laugh about it.
@Peggy - yay - little birds are so much fun to watch.
@Sarah - congratulations on being able to apply for your advanced degree and get more pleasure reading done now.

message 1331: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I can empathize with your son, Margo. I mowed the lawn two weeks ago and was feeling pretty pleased with myself because last year, I couldn't do it in one session. The next morning when I woke up, I couldn't weight bear on my left leg. Today, the doctor and I reviewed my x-rays and he wants to put me on the waitlist for a knee replacement. It will be my second.

The only way I can keep comfortable is to elevate my leg and keep it straight. If I sit with my knee bent, I have pain when I walk.

This last weekend was a challenge because I drove 7 hours down to my dad's party, was up and down all weekend, and then drove 7 hours home.

I had no intention of going on a hike, so I opted for the wagon ride. Off we went after a flat tire was fixed and were happily bumping along. The wagon hit a pot hole, and the tractor kept going. The hitch had disengaged. It wasn't the right hitch for the wagon. While we were debating whether to walk back or try to fix it, someone said, "Look! Here come the horse back riders!"

I was taking pictures when one of the horses got a little skitterish. the rider was able to get it under control, but then my niece's horse shied. It bolted and went up a steep incline and my niece fell off, face first into some mud. My sister (the RN) was on the wagon ride with me so she went to tend to my niece. We looked up, and here came the hikers with my sister-in-law (niece's mother). It was rather serendipitous that the wagon ride with the nurse, the hikers with the mother, and the horses all converged at the same place and the same time to care for my niece.

She was taken to hospital - no broken bones, no concussion, just a bit of shock and some scrapes.

I had to hike back to the lodge on my sore knee. We all survived and had a great time celebrating my dad's 90th birthday.

How long does your doctor estimates you will be in the wait list? Do you use anything for the pain?

message 1334: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11629 comments Oh Janice, now that is serious stuff! Two of my aunts had knee replacements. One followed all the advice she was given by her medical team about rest and excercise and such. She was healed and better than ever in a short time and said it was the best thing she ever did. The other insisted on going back to work (she's a baker) before she was ready and is still having problems. It's like the tale of the three pigs isn't it? Fairy tales are very moralistic LOL

@cherie - I hope you're right but there is some damage to the jount that complicates thing. Ah well, time will tell!

Me and Pete have a few days away booked at the end of the month and the plan was that my son would be around to help out my mum. I am trying to come up with a plan B!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Oh Trish, lucky no one was on the toilet at the time! Would have put those Japanese toilets to shame lol. It's no laughing matter at the time, I understand. I will always remember Lexx trying to fix the cistern one day and him starting shrieking, which I turned the corner to see a fountain coming out of the toilet, hitting the roof, and him jigging around like a leprechaun trying to avoid cold water and turn the tap off. At least it was clean water though.

Peggy, we need to get boxes. We have starlings (introduced pests) in the roof above our bedroom. They start with insanely loud R2D2 noises at 5am every day. Time to block up the holes (the rosellas used to use them and were much more polite) and let them battle it out outside the house. Enjoy!

Margo, sorry about your son's foot! I did the same thing the night before our America/Caribbean trip, but on a wall, not a chair. So at least he didn't trip over a wall that's been in your house the entire time! Here's hoping he heals quicker than thought!

Grats Sarah!! Fantastic achievement, and so nice when you hand in that last piece. Go celebrate!

Lisa, I want badgers!!!

Janice, that sucks! I'm sorry that your knee's playing up. But at least you're on the list. And glad your niece is okay. How scary! At least everyone was near and she wasn't by herself. Glad your Dad had a lovely celebration otherwise!

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments The waitlist for a knee replacement in my city is 2 years. I'm not on the list yet because I want to delay it as much as possible. I'm taking Tylenol Arthritis because I can't take anti-inflammatories. I'm shopping for a knee brace that will help.

It's funny because I told you all about my knee yesterday, and today my facebook page was full of promotions for knee braces!

Another story from the birthday bash. I signed up for archery. The instructor was giving the spiel that you never notch an arrow in the bow and point it at someone. I quipped, "This is a family rebellion, you know." He turned to me with this deer-in-the-headlights-look, blinked a few times, then emphatically stated, "If anyone points an arrow at another person, this will be over and you will be asked to leave." No sense of ha ha apparently.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sorry to hear about your knee Janice.

I thought I knew what a 'starling' was but with you all so excited about them and enjoying their noise, I double checked. I was confused with magpies. Now, they are annoying! So loud early in the morning, and I don't like the sound they make.

We don't see many starlings here. Our garden mainly has (I'm relying on google translations here as I don't know all bird names in English) great tits and blue tits, magpies, wood pigeons/ring doves, collared doves, and also sparrows, blackbirds and robins every now and then. And there's a woodpecker in the tree just outside our garden.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I went to see Tool yesterday. It was awesome!!

They started in the 90s and I saw them live in 2001 and 2006, but I don't think they toured since 2007. No new albums since 2006 either (and only 4 albums in total anyway). So the audience was mostly people of 30-50 who have been waiting for this for ages and were excited like little kids, and Tool has become almost mythical. Kinda like if George RR Martin and Patrick Rothfuss would bring out the books everyone's waiting for ;-)

Also, there were mostly guys at the concert. Women too, but only 25% or so? So I saw something I've never seen before: before the concert and during the 12-minute break between the set and the encore, there was a loooooong line in front of the men's toilets (seriously long, about 10-15 metres outside the doors and at least 100 people), while you could just walk into the lady toilets! I could get used to that ;-)
