We were taught about the easiest mushrooms to identify and pick. Everything we picked was checked by a mycologist before we went home, which was a really good thing for an overly anxious person (esp with hard and fast rules like "don't ever pick mushrooms") like me. And I would be confident to do it again. Also a lovely sunny, autumn day wandering around forests with some of your best mates is always highly recommended.
Eaten a whole heap of Slippery Jacks for dinner and can report in as not dead. Will keep you updated.

LOL' it is not as dramatic as it sounds! The tree was less than 10 yours old so the very worst outcome would have been a broken window ;-)
@Rusalka, happy birthday Lexx! I used to go mushrooming a lot as a kid. Nothing better than coming home with a haul and frying them up for breakfast *yum yum* :-D
Most of the fields we used to get out our best loads from have been built on now, and the rest just don't grow many mushrooms anymore. It must be to do lack of fertilization. Cows just don't poop like they used to hehehe

My parents are actually pretty avid mushroom hunters. They travel to several different states over the course of a month or so from about now to the middle of may. My stepdad is crazy good at finding them in places where no one else can, but the locations of his favorite woods are like government secrets or something. He doesn't take anyone else with him except my mom who is directionally challenged and couldn't find her way back even if she wanted to.

You need to report in as not dead again, Rusalka.

Sorry. Sorry. Busy.
But ate a second batch tonight of different mushrooms. So will have to report back again.

The State Government next door had a super useful fact sheet with pictures, descriptions, and the like. So much more reasonable.
P.S. Still not dead.

Lexx just bought a whole heap of morel spores. He wants to inoculate the backyard. What ever floats your boat, I say.

Might be interesting. Let us hear back how the experiment works. Maybe bringing home some dirt from where they grow, if you have access might work too. It is not just the spores - it is the conditions and the soil make-up too, I believe.
Glad you are not dead again.

lol. I just happened to read this quote:
“If you're reading this...
Congratulations, you're alive.
If that's not something to smile about,
then I don't know what is.”

Oh fun! You'll have to let us know how it turns out.

I love shrooming. I love the butter and flour!! I’m going this weekend.

I go for a hike then, before I go to the store. :0)

Hope you had a good trip Peggy :-)

Yes, it was good! Sao Miguel is a beautiful island and it was nice to be away for a week. The weather was a bit disappointing though. It's not a super sunny and warm island anyway, but we had lots of clouds and wind. Almost no rain though :) But still, I always had to wear jeans and a jacket, and I think I really need sun, warmth, dresses, flip-flops and outside dinners and drinks to get a real holiday feeling ;-)

I had to ban Lexx out of mushroom hunting today. He really wants to but I cannot eat other mushroom. I just need a week... urgh. There is a special level of hell that is eating the same thing every meal...

So glad you had a good time away. You just need to factor holidays into two baskets as we do.
Tropical: As you described your ideal.
Europe: As you described reality.

Rus, I can’t imagine eating mushrooms at every meal. I’m not a fan of them to begin with and only rarely eat them.
Peggy, I can’t believe how fast your week away went. I’m glad you had a good time even if the weather wasn’t the best. At least it wasn’t raining the whole time! I also need sun and warmth to feel like I’ve really had a vacation.

They are Gyromitra Montana or false morels. You can boil them for 20 minutes in a ventilated area and they are no longer poisonous. A lot of people in the Upper Peninsula just cook them like they do morels. They taste good and I’ve never had any issues neither have my parents. If you google them it looks like many people sell these to the restaurants and they use them. In Germany they can them according to some articles.
My dad did find two real morels but they were extremely tiny. I’m guessing next weekend will be better for them.

LOL! Smart approach to the problem, Sandra. :)

Good news, Travis!!!
How many cows did you have bred? breeded? How about artificially inseminated?
