Roz | 4530 comments Travis, your tag post brought back memories. For several years I lived on a kibbutz in Israel that had a herd of about 200. All the cows had tags for all the reasons you mentioned. Some of us did name cows on occasion (our favorites or the ones that gave us problems with milking). Some that we got from other kibbutzim sometimes came with names (as well as tags, of course). We had one my friend and I named Lady, because she was one. A real sweetheart. Unfortunately when her milk output became too low, and couldn't get her pregnant, we had to ship her out. You can guess where her next stop would be. Naming the cows risks looking at them as pets and makes it difficult when they have to go. My friend became a vegetarian.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Phew, it’s a warm one here today! Don’t remember the last time we had an Easter weekend that was this warm and sunny. We had a nice time at the bird of prey centre yesterday. We were planning on going point-to-point racing today but we decided not to go in the end as we discovered it was being run by a local fox hunting association and we are all totally against fox hunting so we decided to just stay at home instead.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Janice wrote: "We're having lovely weather this Easter as well. What is point to point racing?"

It's horse racing over jumps/hurdles in the countryside rather than on an actual racecourse. The jockeys are all amateurs rather than professionals and it seems that all (or at least most) point-to-point fixtures are organised by fox hunting associations. I think a lot of the horses that compete also take part in fox hunting. Hence why we ended up not going. None of us wanted to support something that has such close ties with fox hunting.

Margo | 11629 comments Glad the weather elsewhere is as nice as it is here :-) My problem is that I am stuck in my living room with my pollen filter on high and a box of tissues at my hand. All the trees are in blossom and everyone is cutting their grass - including Pete :(

P.S. Well done for taking a stance against fox hunting Lisa. I live in the countryside so I know foxes are pests but the thought of people taking pleasure in terrifying them and watching them being ripped apart makes my sick :=O

Point-to-pointing is like short horse races - the course is short, not the horses LOL

Sarah | 18550 comments I have not heard of the races before. I'm against fox hunting too. There are a lot around the county we're in and they come on to the towpath some times. It worries me that the dogs will chase our cat when they are in hunt mode.

I feel for you Margo. They forecadt a pollen.bomb this weekend for the UK anyway. I'm outside but i'm suffering.

We didn't really know anything about point-to-point before today. We saw a sign last weekend advertising these races today and thought we would give it a go. It was only when I looked up directions on how to get there that I saw it was organised by a hunting group. Thank god we noticed before we went.

Fox hunting is just so unnecessary. It's not a sport, it's cruelty. I'm not surprised you are worried about hounds potentially chasing your cat, Sarah. I have heard many a story of pets being killed by hounds during a fox hunt and of hunts trespassing into people's gardens. What makes it worse is that it's meant to be illegal yet these hunts brazenly continue and the police and politicians do nothing to stop it. Still, I'm guessing the fact many hunts pay police to look the other way has a lot to do with it.

As for the pollen, it's even making me suffer a bit and I don't normally suffer from hayfever. It's not too bad but I am sneezing quite a bit and my eyes are quite red and itchy.

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments It's a warm Easter weekend here as well. Yesterday, we took the kids and the grandparents out for some fun Easter activities. We started at Brushes and Bunnies, a local painting class put on by the parks and rec department where the kids got to pain spring pictures and visit with the bunny. Then we went to a railroad museum about an hour a way and took a ride on the Easter Bunny Run. It was about a 90 minute train ride that ended at a park for an egg hunt and yet another encounter with the rabbit.

Today was supposed to be Easter service at church, but my youngest was so tired after our long day of fun yesterday that when he didn't wake up in time this morning, I opted to let him sleep instead. Now, ham and potatoes are cooking for Easter dinner.

Sarah | 18550 comments I joined the gym near work yesterday, had an induction followed by a session. Very pleased with myself. Not going to lie, it was a little daunting and I felt a little uncomfortable with it as it's a completely new experience for me. But I think I'm going to like it. I need to combat the poor posture of sitting down working at a computer and generally having a sedentary job. I lead an active lifestyle otherwise I think what with the boating lifestyle but it could definitely be better. So we'll see how this goes.

Margo | 11629 comments Well done Sarah!

Most of us could use some more exercise. I was going to aqua-fit 2 or 3 times a week, I can't do vigorous activity so that is about my pace. Anyway, I haven't been able to go for the last couple of months as my psoriasis has decided it is time to go to party! My palms and the soles of my feet is where it gets me. I know it is stress related - the last time I got it was when I was was living in UK and trying to plan my wedding in Ireland :-) Tried swimming but the chlorine drives it crazy. Can't even walk too far as it is sore :o

Kristie | 19143 comments Way to go, Sarah. I know I could use more exercise. I keep planning to start, but then put it off for various reasons. I may finally have time today, but who knows. It's great that you pushed through and started.

Hope your psoriasis clears up soon and you are able to get back to your routines, Margo. I would imagine having anything on your palms and soles would be really uncomfortable.

Sorry to hear about your psoriasis flaring up, Margo. Do you have any cream you can put on it to soothe it? Also, have you ever tried putting essential oil on it? Lavender oil, tea-tree oil and geranium oil are meant to be good for treating it naturally.

message 970: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Problem with creams for psoriasis is that it doesn't stop it from happening. It can sooth it that's for sure but if it's triggered by stress, then it's not going to do a huge amount. Stress management is where it's at! Sorry you've had a flare up Margo. Sounds uncomfortable on your feet. I cut my foot at the weekend on the side by my heel and I've been in agony all week as my shoes rub on it, so you have my complete sympathy.

That is great, Sarah! I am also trying to exercise more, but it is hard to keep going. I walked 8.5 km last Tuesday, and I hope to reach 10 next week. Still I need to find something less time consuming. I love to walk, but I can't spend that time twice a week every week.

I might have to try the essential oil idea Lisa, thank you. I am on the strongest steroid that my GP can give me, he says that the next stop is a specialist. I could do without the expence though so I will try oils first :-)

Jayme | 4519 comments Great walking distance Sandra. I walk 4.5 miles a couple of times a week. I tried going further, but you are right it eats into time, so 4.5 miles is my happy zone.

Congrats Sarah on joining a gym. I'm feast or famine with my gym membership, but am planning on going more regularly.

I put in my retirement papers today and will officially be retired on July 1st with my last day of work June 17th. I am retiring with 30 years teaching. It is time for me which means more reading!!!

Let me know if they work for you, Margo. They may do nothing at all but it's worth a try. I have been using some recently to try and help ease my Fibromyalgia pain and to help me sleep and they do seem to help a bit. Just make sure not to put them directly onto your skin as they will be strong and could cause irritation or make things worse. Either put a few drops of essential oil into a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil or coconut oil, and massage it in or dilute a few drops in water and soak your feet and hands for a while. You probably know all this already but just in case 😉. For the record, I am actually planning on becoming an aromatherapist hence my interest in essential oils 😉. I hope to start training within the next year or so, health depending of course.

Congratulations on retiring, Jayme. I'm planning on doing it at the end of the year. I started making it known that it was going to happen for about 3 years now, hoping they'd figure out I needed to train someone to do my job. I'm finally getting someone in May.

Lisa, I had actually never heard pf essential oils being used to tread rashes and I am very interested in the idea! I use tea tree oil in water to soak my feet and I use peppermint and lavender in a carrier to ease minor headaches - I have also found that this helps me sleep. Best of luck with the aromatherapy, it is a really cool thing to do ;-)

We are on yellow alert here expecting a visit from storm Hannah tonight. I miss the days when our winds didn't have names LOL

I have one of those carriers too. They are useful if you have a headache. Like you, I also find lavender oil really helpful for sleeping. I recently bought a jar of "sleep stones" which are basically porous volcanic stones soaked in a lavender and chamomile oil. You take the lid off the jar about 30 minutes before bed and they are supposed to help you relax and sleep. They seem to be working for me too, I have definitely been sleeping better since I've had them.

We are expecting a visit from Storm Hannah overnight and through tomorrow too. Lol, I agree, I don't really know why we had to start naming winds either.

They sound great don't they? I have a book mark with a porous stone. I have put an essential oil on it and set it on the dresser by my bed. It's faded now so I should add some more. I used one called "Peace and Calming" by Young Living.
