Kristie | 19137 comments Glad your haircut worked out so well for you, Lisa!

Peggy, I’m sure you’ll make the best decision. Hopefully you get your offer on your new job quickly so you can make an informed choice.

message 52: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments @Rusalka, Oh that sounds painful. It will be a good story for future New Years though. I hope you feel better soon and that your black eye heals quickly.

@Lisa, congrats on the new haircut! It's always exciting to make a change. I have short hair now and have for a long time. I also have these really annoying bangs, and I'd like to let it all grow out, but every time I get to that point where it's long enough to be in my eyes but not long enough to pin back, I give up. I just can't stand it, and I end up going in and having it chopped off again.

We're nearing the end of Christmas break here, and I think I'm dreading going back to school more than the kids are. Since we homeschool, I get the same breaks as they do, and though my role is a bit different, I have close to the same school routine as well. That first week back is always a difficult one, and I'm not looking forward to it. Sleeping in and staying in pajamas all day has been wonderful. Plus, all their extracurricular activities start back up next week which means back to a crazy busy schedule.

Sarah | 18549 comments You've inspired me Lisa. I've just been looking at hair cuts. So far a long choppy asymmetrical bob is taking my fancy. Things might change though.

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Thanks all!

Sarah, the asymmetrical choppy bob sounds really nice! You should go for it. Are you going to keep or get another undercut? I love being part of the undercut crew! 😉

message 55: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments Sounds nice Lisa!

Rusalka, nothing to be embarrassed about! Who hasn't fallen flat on her face on the way home from a wild party in the wee hours 😆 I'm sure your black eye will be a 9 day wonder when you go to work 😏

Sorry for laughing - you tell the tale so well but it must have hurt. Heal soon.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I've been invited to vote during the year to create this list in Listopia:

Anyone else interested?

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Out by a couple of years too.

Makes my NYE things more embarrassing. But thank you all for sympathising, making my ego a little less bruised, and pointing out the amusingness. And I hope Rob is okay too, Sarah. Made me giggle too, which does help.

Hair sounds amazing Lisa! Hope it helps with the fibro. I hadn't heard of that issue/symptom but mum has very fine and short hair, so never been one of hers. But super interested to here if it helps!

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments Yep, I miss the cut-off too, but barely.

message 67: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I will mention it to AmyK, Sandra.
She is in the right age bracket. :o) She hasn't been reading much lately. She is super busy with her job and her kids and planning a trip to Italy in the spring. She said she just falls asleep when she stops moving.

message 68: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments There are some moments in life when it is very hard to find some free time for anything. I hope her trip to Italy is restful, and full of reading. :)

message 69: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Sandra, do you still have the issues with the comment box in the app?

I just posted a message about it in the feedback group. I hope someone has a solution.

message 70: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments Yes, I still have the very same problem. I contacted the feedback group a week ago, or more. The wrote back asking for details, screenshots, etc. They filled a report and sent it to the developers. Let's see if it is of some use.

message 81: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I woke at 4:30 and couldn't go back to sleep so I got up. I went back to sleep at 6:30 and had the craziest dream. It's kind of funny, but it's also gross so I'll put it in spoilers. (view spoiler)

message 82: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Lol Janice!

I woke up 2 nights ago and heard Rob talking in his sleep. I didn't catch all he was saying, but I did hear in a cheerful way: 'I'm still intact'. He couldn't remember what he dreamt about the next morning..

message 83: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I play a little word game when I can't sleep. I go through the alphabet and find "just the right word" before I move on to the letter. Each time, I repeat all the words from the start, adding a new word before I move on. I usually fall asleep fairly quickly. This morning I had almond, bracelet, chocolate, diamond, emerald, family... and finally gave up. I think that's where I got the alphabet soup from.

message 84: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I had odd dreams too. Walking along the towpath in the dark and there were giant rats with long tails. Then Rob turned in to a normal sized hedgehog and hurt his foot so was struggling to walk. I was worried he'd be eaten. I remember stroking his spikes then i woke up. Where the hell did that come from!

Janice and Peggy: Hilarious!
Sarah: The hedgehog hurting his foot sounds so cute!

message 91: by Cherie (last edited Jan 08, 2019 04:29PM) (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I used to count to 100 by 3s to try to go to sleep. (3.6.9.12...) I'd get about half way there and realize that I had made a mistake. It made me so mad, I did it again and again. It NEVER made me fall asleep. I think it just made me too anxious because I could not do it correctly. I can say the alphabet backwards too. I might try your word trick, Janice, and see how far I get before I hopefully, fall asleep. Most of the time, I just listen to Simon Vance narrating a book that I am familiar with. I know the story, so it does not matter if I fall asleep. It is his voice that does it. Usually, it is Dust and Shadow: An Account of the Ripper Killings by Dr. John H. Watson. It is my favorite. I pick a chapter and set the sleep timer and I am usually gone before the voice stops.

Casceil | 2728 comments I used to count down from 1000 by fives to put myself to sleep. It worked for a long time. Now, though, my mind wanders, and I have to keep trying to figure out where I was.

message 93: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments I go to Yoga Nidra once a week which is a sleep meditation. You aren't supposed to go to sleep, but I always catch myself with a soft snore. They start at your right foot. You're to concentrate on your foot, then move up your shin, your knee, etc. It's a method I've used in the past to go to sleep and my mind must recognize it as such. Periodically the instructor will say, "Don't go to sleep. Concentrate." She has teased at the end and said, "I heard a very soft, ever so quiet snore..." That would be me. Yup!

They've started a sound bath which I haven't been to yet, but my friend went last week. She said one of the participants fell so soundly asleep that the instructor had to wake her after the class was over. People were up, rolling their mats, putting on their coats, talking all the while this woman was fast asleep on the floor.

message 94: by Peggy (last edited Jan 08, 2019 11:17PM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I also usually count down from 1000 (just by 1) when I try to fall asleep. Often helps, especially if I count down in pace with my breathing.

I tried your alphabet thing yesterday Janice, but I got all the way to M and decided it was not working. I have to keep my focus on the words I have to remember, for me it works better to do something that goes almost automatically.

I count down from 1000 with steps of 13 or 17 when I'm on a plane that's taking off. I hate it, and this keeps me occupied and focused on something else. I think your alphabet thing would work there for me.

What's a sound bath?

message 95: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Jan 09, 2019 05:01AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments I usually get my kindle and read if I can't sleep. Never a print book because if I turn on the light I never come back to sleep (in case my husband doesn't kill me first). Usually I fall back to sleep soon. If not I have the "illusion" that I least I have some extra reading time...

I LOVE plane take offs!

message 96: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Couple of weird dreams going on there lol! Although I think Rob would make an adorable hedgehog.

I had an interrupted night last night with something jumping on the carport roof just as I got to sleep, Lexx having a hypo at 2.30am, then a possum literally rolled down the roof and fell into the tree outside our bedroom window. I woke up to it tumbling down the iron roof, and worked out what it was by the shape in the tree (window and curtains are open with the heat at the moment). And just as I started dozing off again, he obviously recovered and started growling through the window trying to prove he was still manly. They sounds like the kid in the Grudge. Excuse the bad spelling on the youtube video (not mine), but this is the noise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHulX...

Interesting techniques, will have to try them. Particularly to break my brain out of my fitting dreams and I get into loops trying to make objects fit into places and they don't (but i know they should).

I hate plane take offs and landings too, Peggy. Lexx loves them, Sandra. He grins like a 5 year old every time we take off.

Lol, well, it is a unique feeling. I can understand.

message 98: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19137 comments Too funny dreams. I've been having a lot of weird, vivd dreams lately and I remember them when I wake up for a little bit, but eventually forget them all.

I don't think any of those tactics would work to help me sleep. I can't do anything that uses my brain because that is generally the only part of my body that doesn't want to sleep. I have to take melatonin and try to clear my head. Even listening to an older audio with a calm narrator might or might not work. It completely depends what mood my brain is in. It might just think, "Hey, I haven't heard this for a while. I should listen!"

Sorry, you had such a disruptive night, Rusalka. I can't imagine a possum rolling down my roof! I have to admit that I had a chuckle at that. Then, trying to keep up his street cred by growling at you. Too funny. Thanks for linking the video. I don't think I've ever heard a possum growl before.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Peggy wrote: "What's a sound bath? ..."

It's a meditation where they use crystal bowls of different sizes to make musical sounds. It's supposed to be very relaxing.

If you ever watched the movie, "Miss Congeniality" with Sandra Bullock, you would have seen a similar principle. Her beauty pageant talent was to play a song using glasses filled with different levels of water. When she rubbed the rim, it made a musical note, and she played a song rubbing the rims in a specific order.

message 100: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Good grief, what a crazy night, Rusalka! That opossum growling in the tree was the icing on the cake.

I find the word game stops my mind from focusing on the fact that I'm not sleeping, or on whatever my mind is hashing through to keep me from sleeping (worries, stresses, emotions, etc.)

It's based on a game that you play with a group. The first person says, "I'm going on vacation and I'm taking Aspirin."
Next person says, "I'm going on vacation and I'm taking Aspirin and a book."
"I'm going on vacation and I'm taking Aspirin, a book, and a camera."

When I first started this technique, I would say the entire sentence each time. Eventually, I got to the point where I just said the words.

I've changed the themes along the way - countries or cities I'd like to visit, flowers, books with one word titles, girl's names, boy's names. Now it's just words.
