Let me know how you first batch went (if you have not already, i am catching up._)

Kombucha is expensive here as well, although for$4-6 you get 500ml in stores. The fact I buy locally brewed in bulk makes it a bet better. $11 for my 2 L bottle.

It seems a lot of very rich French business people donate money. I read about someone donating €200 million, and another one €100 million. And that France also wants to set up a fund where regular people can donate.

Laura (Lclwags) (lclwags) | 698 comments I love that this group discusses sensitive subjects and is respectful about it! Travis and Margo I commend you for working to overcome prejudice. Wish certain of my family members would be that self aware. Some of my family tried to raise me to be racist, but once I was old enough to make my own decisions, they couldn't convince me that someone's skin color defines the kind of person they are. I married a Hispanic man and will never be forgiven by some. I can't imagine what they would do if someone in the family came out as LGBTQ. I didn't even post about attending the Pride Festival this past weekend because I don't trust people not to start a fight on my Facebook page. Maybe I should have done it to show my support, but I have always felt that social media is not going to change someone's mind. It just fuels the division in the world.

That's great! I only saw the one, but I'm glad so many people want to help.

Kristie | 19143 comments I just saw an article that said after Salma Hayek’s husband pledged the $113 million that another billionaire pledged $226 million. The fact that he exactly doubled the first pledge makes me wonder if there’s some competition there. lol Either way, I’m glad there are funds coming in.

message 865: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments I was so disappointed with Paris, until I got up stupidly early due to jetlag on a Sunday and wandered down to the Notre Dame. It was 8am when I arrived, and mass had just started. I could still wander around while the congregation worshiped.

And it was the most serene, beautiful experience. This amazing building, with it's windows, pillars, chandeliers, gargoyles, wooden beams that go on forever, and it was a Taizé service, with the priests and the congregation singing and chanting in French the entire time. I spent hours in there.

I think if I had turned up 2 hours later it would have been a completely different experience so I acknowledge how lucky I am to have had this. So when I heard the news this morning my heart broke a little.

message 866: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Notre Dame is a very special place. When I first visited Paris in 2010 I went to visit it almost every day during my 10 days stay. Half of them I stayed for mass. I went twice this year, and I am very happy I brought my kids to see it, even they weren't very enthusiastic at the idea in the beginning (all of them more interested in the Eiffel Tour). It makes me very sad what happened.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Kristie, the $113 and $226 donations you read about are the same €100 and €200 Peggie is talking about. Still a lot of money, but there weren't 4 big donations, but 2.
They were many fundraising going on for the restoration, so I guess the money that wasn't spent yet could also go for the rebuild.

I figured that was the one Peggy was talking about, but I didn't see it until after she mentioned it here.

I'm not sure what 4 donations you are referring to. Do you mean because I said doubled? I just meant that the first billionaire donated an amount and the second billionaire doubled that amount. It's still only two donations. 200 being double 100. Does that make sense?

message 869: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Laura I think you are to commended. Most of us are a product of our up-bringing, to some extent. It was very brave of you to go against the opinion of your family.

As for social media, I think you underestimate it's power to influence peoples thinking. The more people engage in discussion on these controversial issues the more they become normalised. I have seen so much change in my country during (Ireland) the past three decades that it defies believe. Abortion, gay marriage, an openly gay prime minister - my grandmother would not have believed it! Much of the change has been fuelled by public discussion. We shape our own society and change must start somewhere.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Sunday .y wife calls says she is on a run and a dog bit her. Calls back few minutes later says come down. I get there she's being loaded into ambulance. Guy was driving down road said these people's German Shepherd came out but my wife's hand and tackled her to ground. Guy used his car to get dog away got her in back seat and called 911. No broken bones and no serious damage. A lot of pain and swelling and a week off work. Today she has only taken ibuprofen so pain is way down. Gave her stretches so tendons don't scar.

Dog control fined the people said to call if we see dog off a leash or chain because it's the second incident this week. It bit a woman runner on her hip but she didn't go to hospital. She ran home. Neighbor has had dog come after her and her two young kids on bikes twice.one time dog got hold her tire and she called her husband who got after it with his truck. Has gone to house but little kids answer and the parents refuse to come to door. Other neighbor says she's seen dog take down the kids who live there and the dad runs out throws dog off and goes back inside.

All this we've told police and dog control and still the owners are allowed to keep the dog . It's on 10 day quarantine which is why they said call if we see it running loose.

I'm a dog lover but if law enforcement isn't going to deal with this there's several of us who if we see this dog walk off the property have every intention of making this dog vanish. The owners need to build a pen or an invisible electric fence or have the dog put down if they aren't going to do it I just hope it decides to walk in road when I'm driving by. This is ridiculous. Women and little kids being attacked. I'm sure men would be but I rarely see men walking or running it's primarily women and children under 10 . I know 7 or 8 women who walk this stretch of road. These people moved in last summer or last fall. I don't even know who they are.

I thought about parking down the road with binoculars just watching to catch the dog off a leash so I could call dog control. Best case is for law enforcement to handle it but I guess there aren't enough complaints. I just hope no one gets hurt worse than my wife has been.

Oh and we definitely plan to sue for medical bills, ambulance ride and a week off of work.

message 877: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19143 comments Oh wow, Travis. Glad your wife is ok. That could have been a lot worse. I'm surprised they didn't do anything about the dog since this is not the first incident. That's terrible that the owners just let it keep happening. Maybe being sued is exactly what needs to happen for them to take it seriously.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I can't believe those dog owners are so irresponsible! I mean, the first time your dog attacks someone I can imagine it's a surprise, but then you do something about it. Can't believe the police is not taking proper action either.

So sorry this happened to your wife travis.

message 880: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3259 comments Travis that is awful and frustrating too. My mom used to have a ranch in Montana and they were having a bear problem. Were told by the authorities they were not allowed to protect their livestock. They were told by the other ranchers the rule of three S: shoot, shovel and shut up.

The owners of the dog are the real problem but that doesn’t make the attacks any less dangerous. Hope it gets solved.

The way I see it, the main problem is not the dog, it is the human. He obviously has not trained and worked with his dog or cannot manage it, probably plain does not care. Having any animal is a responsibility that a lots of people takes too lightly.

NB. training is not the proper word probably. While my cats come when I call them and sit on demand, etc (I teach them stuff for fun, they love it) . I also mean making sure that they are comfortable with their surrounding. That they are not so scared that they lash out etc. That they have a stimulating environment and so on...

message 883: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments These people are different. I guess they have a small dog that never barks or seems to pay much attention to people that go by and they always tie that dog when it goes outside. It's like the leave the German Shepherd loose to keep people away. Maybe they're cooking meth out back and don't want peepers. One guy has gone there and the kids answer the door but the parents won't come to the door they just say they're busy. He tells the kids he needs to talk to the parents about the dog. Then another woman took her kids there to sell raffle tickets for church and she sat in the truck sees little kid open door, leave, the mother comes to door screams and the woman's kids and slams the door as hard as she could in their face. I think they're military so I don't know if the husband wanted a somewhat aggressive dog to protect the family when he's overseas or what. I need to have Cesar the dog whisperer come teach the dog some manners

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I picked up my glasses today. Been 6 or 7 years since I replaced a set. Evidently transition lenses wear out or fade or something because I once again got transitions and I walked outside they darkened and I was like damn my old ones haven't really darkened for a while now. No wonder the sun's been bothering me. The other part is the clarity of sitting on my face properly and not scratched is like wearing magnifying glasses even though my prescription didn't change at all. But my old glasses were scratched to heck and haven't sat correctly in years. One side hung down probably an inch lower than the other lol

Sorry Laura, I missed a page last night. I completely understand not posting something on Facebook because of fights/debates. I think that's a smart decision when you are in the mood or the right headspace to do so. It's as much about self care as changing the world, and sometimes we forget that.

I find YLTO a very special pocket of the internet where we can debate, think, challenge, and share, but are respectful, kind, and seldom yelly (... okay... well sometimes I get a bit overexcited). Very rare, and glad you're part of it :)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments It's really nice how much money is being pledged to help rebuild Notre Dame. I'm also glad that the overall structure was saved, as well as the towers. At one point it looked like the entire building was going to burn down and be lost. The damage done has been devastating but at least there is a bit of positivity to come out of the situation.

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm pleased your wife is ok Travis. There was a dog attack in the UK at the weekend, an 8 year kid was trapped inside a caravan with a dog (no idea what kind). The dog killed the kid. I often feel sorry for the dogs when they get put down especially as it's generally the fault of their upbringing as opposed to them being inherently dangerous. Here, the owners are prosecuted and can potentially be given a jail sentence. Not sure what it's like in the States. Dangerous dogs (not because of their breed but because of their owners) really need to be taken seriously. I'm surprised that nothing has been done about the one that bit your wife.

I've heard varying reports over what breed of dog it was. Some are saying it was a bulldog, others are saying a staffie. I've also heard that the kid was completely alone in the caravan at the time he was attacked because his mother was in one of the neighbouring caravans. It also sounds like the attack happened really early in the morning, around 4am. Not quite sure why an 8 year old kid was left completely alone at that time of the morning...

message 895: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes it is all very odd. Dogs generally don't just attack for no reason. If it was at 4am in the morning the kid was likely asleep. Why would a dog attack a sleeping kid? Regardless, it was very tragic.

message 897: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So I don't know how much of the non agriculture world knows but China for about a year now has had African Swine Fever running through it's hog herds. It's a devastating disease with no cure or prevention except killing infected herds. Humans to my knowledge could eat the meat as the disease doesn't affect humans but find me a human who willingly wants to eat from a sick animal. This disease could potentially wipe out all the hogs in China. Current reports are they've eradicated more hogs than the entire US even raises. Pork is China's primary protein source for it's people and they have some ridiculous number being raised. There may even be more hogs raised in China than the rest of the world combined. I'm not sure. The risk is the disease getting into other countries. Which I believe it's already jumped the border into 2 other countries.
Anyway
That's a little back story

Now for the disgusting part. I finally watched some of the video even though I knew it wouldn't be smart. It almost made me Ill to watch. The Chinese are loading hogs onto trucks. Inhumanely as all heck. Hogs are piled on top of each other 3 and 4 deep to pack the trucks full then they're dumping them alive in a hole. Not sure if they eventually bury them alive or just let them starve and smother each other.

Activists attack farmers all the time. 99% of us take exceptional care of our animals. If you want to be an activist go attack China. This is disgusting. And it's the Chinese government doing it. What's worse is the fact it's hogs and hogs squeal when scared so there's thousands and thousands of squealing pigs in this huge hole. It's horrible. Absolutely horrible. I understand a lot must be erradicated to try to get ahead of the disease but this is not the correct or humane way to go about it at all. And I don't know what anyone can do about it.

Be warned on social media if you see video of pigs on trucks and China. Or if you watch it mute the volume. Dog gone that about ruined my day

Thanks for the warning, Travis. I will be sure to avoid videos of that nature if I come across them. They sound horrific and I don't want to see that. I agree about needing to try and eradicate the disease but that is not the way to go about it. Just put them down in a peaceful, humane way. China doesn't have any animal welfare laws as far as I know which doesn't help matters. I saw a disgusting video a few years ago which showed these beautiful raccoon dogs in China being skinned alive for their fur to be used in fake UGG boots. I probably watched less than 30 seconds of it but I couldn't stop crying afterwards. It shook me up like crazy. Just horrible.
