Sandra (sanlema) | 11261 comments Yes, this whole Brexit thing is completely out of control. It is sad.

Sarah | 18550 comments I just had my really long hair chopped into an assymetrical bob. One side is about chin height and the other is shoulder height. With it being this short it has some waviness to it too. I'm really liking it. Perfect for the summer. It's the shortest it's been for easily 20 years.

Kristie | 19143 comments Oh I bet it looks nice, Sarah. I’d love to see a pic. I did that recently too. My hair was half way down my back almost to my waist and I cut it last October. It is to my chin now. I’m really liking it shorter.

Sounds lovely, Sarah. It's always nice to have a change. I had my hair chopped into a pixie-bob at the beginning of the year which I loved. It's grown out quite a bit now but I'm having it cut again soon. This time I'm going full on pixie. I avoided short hair for years and now I can't get enough of it.

When Esther said that it was snowing, I thought, "Please keep it in Quebec." It's snowing here this morning. If it has to snow, it may as well get it out of its system right away. My grandson and I are on a roadtrip next weekend.

But it did melt a bit last week.. I am starting to see outside my windows... ok. only my neighbour roof but still...

So, at the end, how many month of winter do you actually have?

message 771: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Our sodastream arrived yesterday! Very excited to be saving plastic bottles now. I know the sodastream is made of plastic but it will help with disposable plastic. Especially coming into the warmer weather when we tend to drink more water. Beans loved the box and spent ages playing in it. Cats! We're looking after our neighbours cats for two weeks as well and they've been coming in regularly. I'm pleased I only have 1.

I'm off sick today. In the night I woke up with severe abdominal pain. I got up to get some pain killers but couldn't walk, it left me bent double laying on the floor. Not good. It's much better now although I have some dull pain there. No idea what that was. I'm hoping it's not appendix problems.

message 772: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments I hope it's not your appendix either Sarah. What is it about boxes that cats love?

message 773: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments We have a sodastream too. I love it! We bought it two months ago or so.

I hope your pain goes away soon.

message 774: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Yes I remember having the conversation Peggy, it's what prompted me to get one. My family had one when i was a kid, and i loved it then.

message 775: by Tricia (new)

Tricia (triciareadsitall) | 900 comments Sarah, I hope it's not your appendix too. Hopefully you feel better soon. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on the Sodastream once you've had a chance to use it for a while. I've been looking at them for the less waste factor, but I wondered what the price difference would be compared with the amount we spend on soda now. I know there is the initial expense, but I haven't figured out how the rest shakes out. It's always a balancing act when you have to evaluate costs vs benefits. Too bad the stuff that's good for us doesn't ever seem to be the less expensive option.

Anyway, let us know what you think of it down the road.

message 776: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm not sure about the cost, it will take a while to make it profitable. Mine wasn't super expensive (€55 including a bottle and a co2 cilinder). I had some issues in the beginning and was given another cilinder for free, but otherwise I would have bought on. Exchanging an empty cilinder for a full one is about €12 and they say you get 60 litres from one cilinder.

I do notice I drink much more soda water now than before. I don't make cokes and such (did buy tonic to try) but use the very concentrated syrups to make sparkled water with lemon or orange flavour, so it's still no calories.

We have 4 seasons.. beginning of winter, winter, end of winter, next winter.

Seriously, usually first snow is in November but winter does not start until December. We always have a storm around St-Pat's day. Then snow melt in April.

But this year it started early and I expect the white stuff will stick around until may.

Thanks, Peggy, I actually hadn't considered flavored water. That would be healthier than the sugary sodas my family drinks way to much of. You can by the flavored water in a bottle of course, but we might be more likely to drink it if we could make it to taste.

Janice (jamasc) | 59894 comments Esther wrote: "We have 4 seasons.. beginning of winter, winter, end of winter, next winter....."

LOL! I can relate to that sentiment.

On the other side of the country, our winter started late. It seemed we were a month behind in everything. The -40C temps we had in February are more common in January. We also get a snow storm around St Patrick's Day, but nothing so far. I wonder if we'll see it the middle of April. I hope not. The snow is almost gone though I still have some in the back & front yards.

hush! don't even say it.... I have had enough already.
I was looking out of my patio door at lunch today and was so happy I could look outside. Then it hit me that I was rejoicing over the fact that the snow was now only a the height of my nose. Everything is relative I guess.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments So I have a gross snot monster in a jar on my dining room table, otherwise known as a SCOBY. I am not a fan of fizzy water, but Lexx and I have been drinking a fair bit of kombucha lately with our alcohol free days. It's fizzy and a bit savoury/tart like beer so kinda hits that spot after a long day.

Time to make our own as it's expensive.

That's a really good idea Rusalka. We don't have a mosque in Shetland, but I'm sure there are muslims on the islands. We're generally quite cosmopolitan, but 2 refugee families have been re-homed in Lerwick recently and there has been some negativity in places. The families are from Syria. I think people are worried because they think their culture will be so alien that they won't fit into the local community. "What if the 2 families don't get on and they start fighting each other? "

It's fear through ignorance on our part I think.

Margo | 11628 comments The past 7 days have been aweful for me - this includes the brexit debacle of course, but more of a person shambles for me.

First up I caught the the horrible bug that is doing the rounds over here and I'm still suffering. Then on friday I found uncle unresponsive in him home. First time in my life I've had to call 999! He went into hospital, remainsed on a trolley for 48 hours in a&e before being moved into a suite of 3 rooms that put most hotels i have ever stayed in too shame. What is it all about? He remained unconscious for most of it though. The docs decided he must of mixed op his meds. When he woke up he was fitter than I was so they sent him home!

Sunday my laptop died. My son spent the 2 days trying to to revive it but nothing worked :( It took my reading spreadsheet and some tax stuff out with it - yes, I am that stupid person who doesn't back up regularly enough! All my 2019 stuff is lost :O I have ordered a new pc and I will be busy for the next few weeks redoing stuff 😭

Then yesterday I smashed my favourite coffee mug!!! I might have said a few rude words then 😈 Ohh what a week #$@#

There are tons of workshop to learn ho to do your own kombucha around here. I have been trying to convince myself to attend one. But the $$ factor is not enough in my case as there is a place nearby that makes it and sell it "in bulk". You get there with your bottles and refill them. I buy their curcurma-ginger in a 4 litre bottle. I am totally addicted.

It's really strangly addictive. Our old housemates are pregnant at the moment, and the guy is so into kombucha, much more than her. He's a big beer drinker, and is doing the solidarity non-drinking with her, and is obsessively drinking the stuff.

Our problem here is that a 300mL bottle costs between $4-6.

I didn't get a chance to make the tea for it last night, so will do tonight. We have a bottle of elderflower cordial we need to use up, so that will probably be our first batch.
