I survived... and I'm still dry... phew!

I'm now sat invigilating the next (last!) exam. Have taken my mobile with me this time and have a colleague's number just in case! Thought a panic text would be the way to go. I've learned my lesson and I had NO coffee at break time... (laughs - but not out loud!)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Oh I missed your response. I am glad you survived Annerlee! I was thinking it was weird you were invigilating by yourself. They have rules here to make sure there are at least two of you, for fairness reasons, and other... practical ones.

Maybe you just need a plastic bottle LOL

No worries, in this thread we always do sad and funny at the same time. Glad you managed the 10 minutes and got a colleague's phone number. And smart thinking, staying away from the coffee ;-)

Blockbuster is a video renting shop. Very popular in the days of VHS's

We still had one?! OH I think I remember reading about that shop, that the community banded around them to keep them going, which was a bit sweet but redundant. But sad they have gone out of business finally. Yet glad that I no longer have a company who can collect my late fines in the country anymore lol

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Never heard of Seaquest. I don't think it was a thing around where I live . Most of us only had 3 channels with an antenna so that must have been a different network than we had

message 611: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Our video rental places went out in early 2000's. The last couple of years I don't think we rented any movies but went in once a week or so because they had used DVDs for sale for $5 or something. We bought so many. This was before Walmart was selling new DVDs for $5-$7 in bins

Plastic bottle? Nope, not going there (oops - that was a bad pun!)

If it were an external exam, there would be definitely be more invigilators and they would be external to the College. This is more of a trial run / mock exam setup. There are only 4 students sitting here, so I'm not in a cavernous hall all on my own.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Lately a bunch of artists have been trashing Imagine Dragons. The lead singer finally spoke out on it the other day. He said it does add to his personal depression issues but he can deal with it but he doesn't like that a lot of kids listen to his music or are inspired and all this negativity towards his band could have negative affects on them. Could lead to taunting or bullying or just cause depression making them feel uncool. I've never thought about it like that but he has a point.
I personally like imagine dragons. I don't know why they're becoming the new Nickelback. My kids love the group and listen to their music almost every day. It's positive music that's catchy and a little different but completely safe to have on no matter who is around.

So everyone needs to stop hating on imagine dragons. You don't have to like them but you can just not listen without all the negative comments. Haters stop hating already

message 614: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Agreed Travis! Not specifically about Imagine Dragons, but in general. I was brought up with 'if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all' and I think more people should live by that.

Reading comments on news items on Facebook for example makes me very very very sad. So many hateful people. I don't read comments anymore. Some news sites I read regularly used to have the option to comment on a news item directly, but they removed it because it just got out of hand.

Agreed! It is out of hand. People are so judgmental and hateful on social media. It is really sad. I find it stressful and try not to read the comments now.

Maybe try reading a book that you've already read but really loved. I find that sometimes helps me to get out of slumps.

I am in a similar situation. Life is too, too busy at the moment and I don't seem to find time to read, which is also annoying, because I have always manage to find a few minutes here and there before.

Margo | 11628 comments Tiffinay Aching is great fun Cherie.!

I am also very busy w8th family stuff, mostly illnesses, which is bad, but one huge bright spot on the horizon! My goddaughter is coming to visit from england *YAY*

She is coming for the weekend with her partner and I suspect that they are going to tell us that they are going married! It is over a year since I saw her and I haven't met her boyfriend before so I am very excited -exhausted but excited 😊

I hope you have a great time with your goddaughter, Margo. Let's hope she does have some good news for you 💍🤞

Also, sorry to hear your uncle's plastic surgery has had to be pushed back. It's annoying and unfair but I guess he can't have it done if he is still recovering from pneumonia. I hope he feels better soon.

message 630: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments I'm having a bit of a strange thing happening with a ring that I got for my 18th birthday. I wear it all the time, the only time I ever take it off is when I shower, bath or swim. I have never had any issues with wearing it. However, the finger I wear it on recently started to become really painful directly under the ring and I was forced to take it off. Minutes after I took it off the pain went away so I put it back on. The pain came back within minutes. I took it off again and the pain went away. I decided to keep it off for a while and I haven't worn it for a couple of weeks. Just put it on again and the pain quickly came back so have had to take it off again. It's really bizarre. It's not too tight, it's not tarnished and I don't think it's an allergy to the metal as I wore it for years with no problems and I wear another ring made of the same metal and that is not causing me any pain. It's looking like I might not be able to wear it again :(

message 631: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments How very odd Lisa. Have you tried it on another finger to see what happens?

message 632: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments That is really odd, Lisa. You may have to wear it on a chain around your neck.

message 633: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I wonder if the ring had some coating that wore off over time. Maybe a good clean and jewelers evaluation would help.

message 635: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments That's really strange, Lisa. I agree with the experimentation idea. Is it just that finger?

message 636: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments For those who you who have read The Rook or heard me bang on about it, the teaser trailer for the show on Starz came out today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWOKu...

The writing and reading community of Canberra is going a bit nuts at the moment, that a one of our small city has made it this big!

message 637: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Yes, the ring situation is very strange. I tried it on the same finger on the opposite hand (as that's the only other finger it will fit) and it caused pain there too. It took longer for the pain to kick in but it still happened. I'm guessing something is probably wrong with the metal. I will probably have to do what Renee suggested and take it into the jewellers and see what they say. Hopefully they will be able to sort it. In the meantime, I guess I will just have to leave it off or wear it on a chain like Janice suggested.

message 638: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19138 comments That is strange, Lisa. I hope the jeweler can sort it out for you. Let us know how it turns out.

message 639: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Our weekend was eventful. Friday afternoon son was headed across lawn and got sprayed by a skunk. Apparently it's skunk mating season and they're active during the day lately. He just found it as a science experiment. They shoot out green liguid and it turns to mist. He must not have been hit as directly as we thought because the smell washed off him easily. Thankfully

Then about 2 hours later my wife was trying chicken and somehow she got splattered and burned by a drop of grease which caused her to jerk which somehow the tongs she had must have skimmed the oil or she brought them out so fast that she basically threw a spoonful of hot grease across kitchen landing on my daughter. All chaos broke out as we ripped her clothes off only to find none got on her clothes all got on her face. Then she probably thought she was being waterboarded as we held her under sink. Iced her down. Wasnt that bad. Could have been worse. She got blisters on her nose then across forehead and when she shuts her eye has like 4 on her eyelid. Basically just trying to prevent infection at this time. She said she doesn't feel pain since that night. But it's so scary how close to her eye it came. So glad her instincts kicked in and shut her eye. In the end it seems like it will be ok. Doesn't look like she'll have any scars or anything. Have her sitting out from gym or going outside in school to be safe. Just a weird situation. I was right next to my wife and saw it all. Just a freak event. And we all have an updated respect for the stove now

Sandra (sanlema) | 11260 comments That is scary, Travis. Glad to know your daughter is doing well so far. Accidents happen. Even trying to be very careful. It is imposible to foresee every single risk. I remember when my son broke his collar bone. One second he was raking leaves with me. The following second he had fell down on his arm.

Janice (jamasc) | 59887 comments Holy smokes, Travis! What a weekend. I'm so glad to hear that your daughter didn't get seriously burnt, and that she'll heal quickly. Your son has a new respect for skunks, I'll bet.

message 647: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments Thanks everyone. It looks like things will all be ok. The hardest thing with raising kids is when they get sick or get hurt because you're left helpless but it's part of growing up. I relive the incident in my head about 20 times a day though. It was definitely the hardest on my wife though. Kids are resilient. In fact, that night before bed my daughter told my wife, "mommy I'm glad you didn't get what I got because I wouldn't want you to have to go through that ". My daughter is 5 and has empathy like I've never seen and has ever since she started talking basically. She just seems very in tune with others feelings .

Yeah definitely new respect for skunks. And since the skunks steal the chicken eggs he's been researching homemade skunk repellents that won't repel birds. So he can keep the skunks away from the chickens

message 648: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I love that your son is trying to protect his chickens from those pesky, stinky skunks! Make sure he doesn't go spraying them with weird things without your knowledge though. I would have totally done that as the precocious child I was without knowing how susceptible birds are to chemicals.

I'm sorry you all had a scare with your daughter too. I did something similar a couple of months ago, but got myself in the face not someone else. How scary. It's amazing how quickly and automatically we close our eyes though. I'm glad she's okay, and she sounds like a sweetie.

I really wanted to read Rosemary and Rue It was checked out from the library. Now they say it has gone missing.

I know I can read another spice title but I want to read and discuss with the group.

Excuse me for a moment while I stomp around and throw my teddy bear at the w3all.
